As has been the case for a long time now, the Chevy Silverado was again the Bow Tie’s best-selling model by a wide margin, netting 148,916 units to account for a third of overall sales. The best-seller for Nissan was the Rogue with 50,356 deliveries during the quarter. The full-size truck line continues to represent the bread-and-butter for Chevy and for GM as a whole from sales volume and financial standpoints, while crossovers and sedans serve that role for Nissan.

The Chevy vehicle that experienced the largest sales jump was far and away the all-new Trax subcompact crossover, growing a whopping 153 percent to 52,875 units. The Trax has become a best-seller for GM as a whole, outselling all utility vehicles across its four automotive brands this quarter. It alone outpaced Nissan’s top seller, the Rogue. Meanwhile, the Chevy Colorado midsize pickup was the second-fastest growing model for the Bow Tie, up 35 percent. The rest of the Bow Tie brand’s models posted either modest gains or a decline. Note that sales figures for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are are reported on the Bolt EV line this quarter.

For Nissan, the all-electric Ariya crossover posted the biggest growth at 123 percent, followed by the Z sports coupe, which saw a 57 percent jump. Unlike Chevy, a large majority of Nissan models were in the green during Q2. That’s because Chevy sales were impacted by downturns of discontinued models, including the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV and the Camaro. That said, a next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, as is a next-generation Chevy Camaro. However, sales from EVs and new models balanced out lost sales volume from discontinued nameplates. For Nissan, the Maxima was retired last summer. More models from both brands will be discontinued over the next year or so.

Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, meaning GMC takes some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then including the two GM marques makes sense. Doing so results in GM outselling Honda nearly three-to-one, with Chevy plus GMC sales adding up to 611,696 deliveries compared to Nissan’s 222,598 units.

Vans

Chevy sells one commercial van – the Express, which is offered in passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab variants. Meanwhile, Nissan no longer sells any vans since it exited the commercial van segment altogether. Ironically, the discontinued Chevy City Express compact van was a rebadge of the Nissan NV200 and was even produced by Nissan.

Meanwhile, GM’s current Chevy Express is an old vehicle tracing its roots to the 1990s and it, along with its GMC Savana corporate twin, remains the oldest model in its segment by a wide margin. In fact, the two vans are the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Even though The General previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain, it may have canceled any such plans and instead elected to simply rebadge the BrightDrop vans as Chevys.

The GM Authority Take

Overall, Chevy outsold Nissan by 229,513 units during the second quarter of 2024. Adding in cross-shopped GMC models puts GM ahead by an even higher 389,098 deliveries, outpacing Nissan nearly three-to-one.

Furthermore, The General (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) outpaced Nissan Motor Corporation (the Nissan and Infiniti brands) three-to-one during the same timeframe. Specifically, GM posted 696,086 deliveries to Nissan Motors’ 236,721 units during Q2.

Chevy is continuing to introduce new, refreshed, and next-generation models for its ICE and EV lineup to hold its own against competitors, while Nissan develops its own EV platforms and tech. In answer to pressure in the marketplace, GM has now begun to pursue hybrids, with plans to introduce PHEVs in 2027 as its own bridge between ICE and EV. For its part, Nissan seems to have abandoned the hybrid drivetrain altogether.

  1. Nissan is a disaster just waiting to happen right now. Love him or hate him, things were actually MUCH better under Ghosn. And that’s a fact.

    1. I disagree. I grew up in a Nissan family. Their cars were far better built back then in some ways on par with Honda in reliability. We had two Pathfinders a 96 and a 2000 and those vehicles were tanks. I still see several on the roads today. It wasn’t until Renault came into the picture where their products started to become garbage. The only thing Renault has done was provide cash. But much like Geely with Volvo, it only helped modernize their cars while their quality and reliability took a dive.
