GMC Among Worst Domestic Brands In Consumer Reports 2024 Ratings

GMC didn’t fare very well in Consumer Reports‘ 2024 ratings. In fact, it was ranked as one of the worst brands on the list, slotting in almost dead last among the 34 automotive brands examined by the publication.
CR‘s annual brand rankings are based on a specific manufacturer’s average Overall Score. This metric is determined based on a combination of road test scores, predicted reliability and owner satisfaction data, as well as safety data for all of the models from each manufacturer brand. In order to be considered for the list, CR must have tested at least two vehicles from the brand’s lineup.
All told, GMC earned just 53 points, landing the automaker in 31st place, thanks to its 71-point road test score, below average predicted reliability, and average owner satisfaction scores. CR doesn’t recommend any of the three vehicles it put to the test while compiling scores, and to top it off, GMC doesn’t offer any vehicles considered to be “Green Choices” by the publication.
GMC’s lackluster rating places it second-to-last among domestic brands, only outperforming Jeep, which scored 46 points and slotted in last overall. GMC was also the worst-rated nameplate among its GM brethren, tailing Buick in 13th (69), Cadillac in 14th (68) and Chevy in 22nd (62). For comparison, the highest-ranked brand overall was BMW with a score of 82.
It’s not exactly a surprise that GMC was near the bottom of CR‘s list this year, considering that the automaker hasn’t done all that well in past studies. It earned low marks in the 2024 reliability study, indicating that owners reported experiencing quite a few problems with their vehicles. Back in 2023, the automaker scored poorly in terms of owner satisfaction, too.
However, the publication isn’t entirely negative toward Big Red. It recognized the GMC Acadia as being an exceptionally quiet vehicle, commending the crossover for responsive handling and a smooth ride. Additionally, a survey found that GM vehicle owners are generally satisfied with their vehicle’s integrated infotainment systems.

Fun fact. Consumer reports only takes data from subscribers to their magazines. That is why foreign brands, especially Asian brands do so well in their magazine.
So what?
I have a 2014 Silverado with over 11,000 engine hours, speedometer no longer works but the engine hour clock does…..
That’s interesting. Because fun fact with me, when I bought my Rav4 in 2016, I got the surveys from both them and JD Power. Fast forward to 2022 when I bought my XT5, I get the JD Power one but not the CR one. So yeah. I have my suspicion on whether CR is legit or not.
Oh no. My car brand sucks so I’ll bash the magazine.
GM apologist.
Keeps that poor gm feeling
Don’t buy one then. This is America and nobody is forcing you to. Stick with your taxicab company favorites like Toyota and Honda. I have my Toyota and it’s the last one I will ever buy. After my Cadillac, I will be looking at either an Equinox or Terrain when it comes time to replace my Rav.
Good luck with that.
My 2013 Toyota loaded Avalon is my fun car to drive. 240 horse supercharged killer CD system runs like a bat out of hell. But my number one car was my 1976 blue Vette. Turned a lot of heads with that car. Never owned a Ford and had on junk Plymouth Fury.
Consumer Reports hates all GM vehicles. GM doesn’t help itself with shoddy quality but all domestic brands has quality issues
Is there any credibility from CR? They hate anything American.
It’s more that CR hates union made. They had a lockout strike with their own typesetters Union many years ago. Ugly, all got replaced by scabs. Biased against unionized companies ever since.
Survey info is from owners, not CR.
@beachy yes, but CR only polls the ones they want to, to get the results they want. All polls can be swayed.
Thank you Galen Issac 👍 Toyota, Mazda abd I think Hyundai are going through massive recalls right now but you never hear people put them down Toyota has had flood to, sludge in their V8, rustiing frames on Tacoma, the gas pedal issue, air bags, transmissions in 2009 RAV4 where bad. I mean CR no I don’t trust them I but what I want !
Unions have ruined domestic auto makers.
No Chris buying cheaper components for vehicles is ruining the entire industry union or not.
Yea, we should all start out working in an industrial environment at minimum wages. That will surely improve quality. Most Union worker have pride in what they do and feel like they apart of something special and needed by consumers and enthusiasts. I worked at GM for 31 years and loved being in the paint shop, but from all the bending and continuous twisting and from spraying 60 door jams an hour, my back is in chronic pain. And I should have been making minimum wages if you Union haters had it your way. Don’t comment on something you k ow nothing about with your soft Hands and cold heart.
I love my gmc canyon 2023 . 10,000 miles no problems.
Take care of it and it will be 10 years and 100k miles with no problems. My Dad’s 2000 Sierra made it 11 years and 150k+ miles with zero problems.
Chevy and GMC go down the same assembly lines, with just a few cosmetic differences. My 94 Silverado lasted 23 years. My 2002 2500 Silverado was never in the shop for a repair for 20 years before it got a corroded contact that sent a signal to the trans. when you started the truck. After it was repaired I traded it in on a 2022 Silverado 3500 Dually. I take extreme care of my vehicles. If you do that they’ll last a really long time.
When I gave my sister my 2006 GMC Canyon with 5 cylinders it had almost 450K miles on it. I replaced it with another 2021 GMC Canyon with. V6 IE engine and still happy with it.
Me too. 9000 miles NO issues. Bought it in March 2023.
Best suv I ever owned!!!!!
I had a 2006 1500HD with 240000 miles with no engine or transmission work and would still be driving if I hadn’t hit a moose one night
Jeremy- What is a 1500HD?
I thought they made 1500’s and 2500HD, 3500HD and up?
Is that a typo or do they make a HD 1500? Just curious.
I hope you and any passengers were ok. Did you get to keep the moose?
They made a 1500 1500hd 2500 2500hd and 3500 for a time from like 2000-06/07. 1500hd and 2500 were essentially the same truck with different badges. Neither were as popular as the other models either.
You wouldn’t be so lucky if it wasn’t American truck.
I had an 06 also, 215k original water pump and rad hoses, never leaked a drop of any fluids
The report isn’t wrong. GMC Terrains are notoriously poor. The company already has 3 class action lawsuits against them for failure to do a recall. I was one of the victims. I am having to replace the engine. GMC is aware the engines are faulty and will not do anything about it. Not to mention their customer service and customer care department are very poor.
I will try to make short as I can. Having been a CP’s subscriber for about five years I was sent a magazine where they tested lawn mowers. The lawnmower they chose for first place scored lower than the one they didn’t choose that should have been in first place. They did the same on a weed eater that scored lower making it first place. I called my brother who was a die hard CR’s subscriber like myself and asked him what he thought about it. He pointed out a couple other products that he had found with the same issues of being knocked out of first place by a lower scoring product. But I main problem was they send out questionaries for subscribers asking most every question about the product from cars to any other thing you might own. Might own because even if you don’t own the product they have no way of knowing if you do or don’t own something but they take your word on it. So let’s just say you don’t own a GM vehicle and you hate them but you love Fords as an example. You could score the GM vehicle very low and make up un true negative things about it. But remember you love Fords even if you don’t have one you can make up all positive things ranking it higher than even a Toyota. This hurts the score of something you don’t even own that CP’s used back when I subscribed to their magazine. I thing you get my point and the scores you gave if you did to something something like a GM or Toyota vehicle is used against them but the positive ones you gave a Ford that you might not even own is used positively to rate it by them. This has been sometime ago so I am not sure how they do it now. But I felt receiving something in my email to rate something I positively didn’t own was sickening. If your an honest person all is fine but if your not than their questionaries they sent out was not an accurate way to score anything in my opinion. Thank You BTW I am 79 years and I have owned most ever brand vehicle built and I have found you can get a good one or not so good it’s the luck of the draw. And how does CP’s score things like cars that haven’t even been out a full year yet. They test vehicles and compare them but their guessing on reliability and by their questionaries they send out. Sorry for such a very long comment.
This article is woefully lacking, leading readers to jump to incorrect conclusions. Shame on you, GMA. For example, what 3 vehicles were included in the survey and how come Buick and Chevy did so much better?
I’ve got a 2019 Terrain, 68k miles. Just replaced tires and battery 2 months ago. Nothing else except maintenance. Had a 2015 before. Nothing other than tires and maintenance on it. I think they drive great also.
Gmc terrain 2019 200000 no problem love it.
I love GMC. Best trucks on the planet. Number 1 rating over all trucks. Go America.
I own a2020 GMC SIERRA SLT ,it’s a very nice truck looks great BUT the transmission breaks every other month, then my truck sits in the shop for about two weeks before it’s repaired, I can’t trust going anywhere in that truck.
My 2022 GMC Denali 37000 miles had the 6.2 engine lock up 4 months out for a new one.
Very bad trade value.
2002 GMC Envoy still going strong after 256k miles. Very little maintenance required over the years. Our 2020 GMC Acadia smoothest and quietest ever, built in Tennessee.
I’m Asian I have my Toyota truck is going to the shop all time have a lot problems I Chevy avalanche I have two Cadillac one EXT and one SUV and Dodge Charger and Corvette there is nothing wrong at all only my f#cking Toyota I want to sale but my wife keep can take garbage to the dump sorry no Asian car truck for me only GM for my family My she Asian she don’t drives any Asian $hit
BMW doesn’t build a truck.
Too bad CR. I just bought a GM Yukon Denali ultimate 4 months ago and love every minute driving it…
