Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
GMC Savana sales during Q1 2024 saw it remain in last place when ranked by sales volume, as it has for some time now. The full-size van segment comprises passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab models. The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) kept the top spot, where it has remained since its launch, with sales up 20 percent for 36,999 deliveries, here as the only model with numbers in the green. The Blue Oval’s second entry, the Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales), moved into second place with a three percent slip to 10,440 units, while the Chevy Express (see running Chevy Express sales) followed in third this time around with a 13 percent downturn to 7,502 units. The Ram ProMaster fell to fourth, down from the second-place showing it has held for the past two-plus years, with a 67 percent slide to 5,853 units. Finally, the GMC Savana (see running GMC Savana sales) finished last with a 78 percent drop for just 1,078 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take
GMC Savana sales continued to plummet to start out the year. Even combined sales of the Savana with its corporate twin, the Chevy Express, wasn’t enough to push GM ahead of Ford, which saw its two models claim over three-fourths of all sales during the first quarter of 2024. In fact, only the segment-leading Ford Transit was in the green.
Notably, the Savana/Express is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, with the duo remaining the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin. They’re even the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Meanwhile, the field is offering substantially more modern and attractive products.
Worse yet, GM eliminated the turbo-diesel baby Duramax engine, which was one of the key differentiators of the automaker’s full-size van offering. With the diesel gone, there’s now not much reason for fleets or retail buyers to opt for either of the two GM twins. Class-leading towing is one of this van’s only competitive advantages.
A much-needed overhaul would substantially help GM in this space, but The General may have canceled any such plans, even though the automaker previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain.
Additionally, this past December, GM issued a “Stop Build” order for four configurations of the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana commercial cargo vans, halting production of those variants immediately, which may have impacted sales this quarter. Fortunately, production is back on track for both GM vans.
On a positive note, to date GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units.
About GMC Savana
The 2024 GMC Savana arrives with two new transmissions being the only changes for the Passenger Van, Cargo Van, and Cutaway configurations. While, initially, the 2024 GMC Savana cargo van dropped the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, it is now available again, joining the atmospheric 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine as the only two powerplants offered on the 2024 Savana. Check out the 2024 GMC Savana towing capacities.
Additionally, 2024 GMC Savana infotainment system upgrades are no longer available, leaving the 2024 Savana with only a single infotainment option, namely the base audio system consisting of the AM/FM stereo with an MP3 player. That system includes an auxiliary jack and two front-door speakers.

Can’t sell them if you don’t build them. Another GM exec asleep at the switch.
I totally agree. You cant sell a 20 year old for van for a new van price either. Guess what nobody will buy it. dah!
There are none to sell. GM needs to increase production, not blame the low sale on lack of consumer interest as the article suggests. The winner eill be the one that ships the most vehicles to their dealers period.

Same old gm “game plan”, don’t build them (and certainly don’t advertise or update them), then drop the model due to “poor sales numbers). See Camaro, Malibu………..
GM is trying to kill off another model.
Work at a dealership… we haven’t had an allocation for a Savana in well over a year despite having orders lingering in oder workbench. Just typical GM bs.
you cant sell something that you refuse to build. the would be selling these like hot cakes if they actually were making them and sending them to dealerships. the DONT WANT to sell them.

Yes but they saved a lot of money that way! The gm way- don’t spend $$$$to increase production at another plant and then charge outrageous prices on the fewer units available to sell while customers flee to your competitors. But hey, at least average transaction prices are higher and we all know Wall Street loves that!
They cannot sell them if they don’t build them been waiting over 2years now still no allocations have name in 4 different dealers what is the problem out there it was a great vehicle they don’t have to change it was perfect th only thing they have to change is the idiots running the show
I own multiple GM trucks with my construction business . I have been on the hunt for another GM 3500 cargo van for 2 years. I was in by my dealership last fall and they would only let me order one if I had a fleet account. I can’t recall the number of vehicles it would take to get one allocated. But all you can find is 3-4 year old U-Haul rentals beat up on the lot selling for more money than a new one. Sales guy said they won’t even let them order one for the lot.
These are the best van platform out there and GM wants to kill it I’m sure! People buy it because they are better than the competition. Listen to the people paying the bills GM!
I have always gotten savana vans for work,,,,,,,but stopped buying new ones at start of crazy pricing.
WILL NOT pay those prices for them,,,,,same van as 10 years ago. WON’T DO IT !
Get RID of Barca and this thing will takeoff. Women don’t like big boxy things. Just put a minimum 6-cylinder diesel in it or as an option. The other one at 4-cylinder was just taken as too small by men.
I’ve a 2015 Transit with the medium tall roof I bought new. I cannot believe GM has still not come up with a modern, competitive van. GM’s failure to offer more than a standard roof height is inexcusable.
Ever drive a high roof one in the crosswinds?
Every other country on earth does, so why not at GM?
