Cadillac Is Second-Best Domestic Brand In Consumer Reports 2024 Ratings

Across the automotive landscape, it’s a constant fight to remain one step ahead of the competition in regard to features, powertrains, safety, and so much more. In an attempt to rank each brand against one another, Consumer Reports has compiled a list of who makes the best vehicles, and now, Cadillac was listed as the second-best among domestic brands.

According to a report from Consumer Reports, Cadillac was ranked 14th overall with a score of 68/100 to stand as the second-best domestic brand that CR evaluated, slotting just behind Buick in 13th and beating out Genesis, Infiniti, Tesla, Lincoln, and Volvo. Notably, this was quite the jump from Consumer Reports’ 2023 ratings, where Caddy stood in 25th place.

It’s worth noting that BMW was ranked number one overall, while Jeep placed last among 34 brands.

While General Motors’ U.S.-market brands generally ranked mid-pack when compared to the rest of the brands evaluated, Cadillac’s 14th-place rating places the luxury marque in the top half of the report card. In regard to why Caddy saw such a notable improvement from the year prior – as only Porsche improved more with a jump of 11 spots – there are quite a few explanations, including affordable prices for the luxury, reasonable cost of ownership, and plenty of modern technology goodies like GM’s Super Cruise.

In regard to specific vehicles, the Cadillac CT4, CT5, and XT6 were all recommended by CR, while Cadillac owners reported that they were generally satisfied with their infotainment systems.

As for the ratings themselves, Consumer Reports evaluated each brand’s overall score through four factors, including:

  • Road testing – each vehicle was put through more than 50 tests to determine its roadworthiness
  • Predicted reliability – based on problems reported by members from 20 potential trouble areas
  • Owner satisfaction – based on if members claimed that they would purchase the same vehicle again
  • Safety – assessed available crash test results, and rewarded extra points to vehicles that were equipped as standard with crash prevention systems

  1. Hmmm CR the American hating company! They are so stuck in the 80s with everything American being not good times have changed American cars have gotten a lot better. But what do I know everyone is entitled to their opinion.

  2. Cadillac makes great vehicles on Alpga platform and C1. Super Cruise is one of the most advanced systems.

GM is the highest quality Detroit brand w/Ford lagging and Stellantis not worth discussing.
GM sales have increased since bankruptcy. Adding Trax was brilliant and is good quality on VFF arictecture. JD Power ranks Nox higher than Rav 4 or CRV which is shocking.
Chevy is a solid #3 in every segment. GMC is growing. Buick is growing but should be stronger.

  3. Confused. Buick is a domestic brand with only one of their 4 SUV’s/CUE’s made in t USA?

  4. My bad on above post. Thinking of Buick rather than Cadillac.

    1. Your underlying point still makes sense. The notion of domestic versus import seems like a concept best left to the 80’s. Interpreting Buick as the #1 domestic makes no sense when it sells so many imports….Cadillac is far more domestic. Even BMW, at #1 overall, must sell more US domestic vehicles (X5 and X7 I believe) than Buick….to say nothing of Toyota and Honda.

I read a 2023 study from cars.com about the most domestic vehicles based on parts and assembly. Of the old big 3, the most domestic vehicle came in at #16, the Lincoln Corsair. The top GM vehicle was the Corvette at #19. Big 3 aside, the most domestic truck came in at #12, and it’s the Toyota Tundra. Seems like the old definitions are best left in the past.

  5. Cadillac ranks at the BOTTOM for replacement parts availability! Why does it take 9 months and counting to get a part when they break down??????

  6. Cars have components from all over and they are assembled all over the world. Most writers and most people are really identifying the corporate headquarters of the company that sells the vehicle. That still makes sense. If you buy an “American” vehicle, the profit is mostly going back to America and the profit is being taxed in America which should be important to Americans. Over the past 30 or 40 years more and more vehicles are being built elsewhere, but in the last few years manufacturing is picking back up in America which means more jobs for American workers and families. Things are getting better even if far too many “American” cars are still being built in S. Korea and Mexico.

    1. To your point on manufacturing, there are multiples more in paying employees in plants and in dealerships than in profits. What those people pay in taxes dwarfs what corporate pays (whether GM, Tesla or Toyota). That said, a major benefit to being domestic comes when there are no profits. That’s when ordinary Americans write you a check to bail out your global operations.
