The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra have undergone significant improvement over the years, most notably with the current generation. That includes both the current-gen light-duty pickups, which were unveiled for the 2019 model year, and the current-gen heavy-duty models, which were unveiled for the 2020 model year. Over the last several years, the upgrades have ranged from new features, to new trim levels, to new powertrains, and beyond. However, despite these advances, we think there’s still some room for improvement. As such, we’re listing off the 10 things we’d improve on the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.
Before we dive into the list, it makes sense to quickly summarize the improvements made thus far, starting with an expanded lineup through the addition of new variants like the Trail Boss, AT4, ZR2, and AT4X. GM also overhauled the pickups’ interiors in conjunction with the 2022.5 model year refresh, and it added the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine for half-ton models with the 2019 model year, later replacing the LM2 with the even-better 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax. To this latter point, GM is now the only automaker to offer a half-ton full-size pickup with a diesel engine option.
Additionally, GM has (mostly) fixed the much-maligned eight-speed automatic transmission with a second-generation eight-speed automatic in conjunction with the launch of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. GM has even expanded production of its full-size pickups to the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
That all said, here are ten things that still need improvement:
1. Lifter Issue Resolution
At this point, it’s well known that the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 and 6.2L V8 L87 exhibit significant lifter issues. Addressing these would not only solve performance problems, but also help to restore GM’s reputation.
2. Engine Lineup Changes
The 5.3L V8 L84 engine needs to go. Not only is it lacking in power compared to the 6.2L V8 L87 (with negligible fuel economy benefits), but the TurboMax 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine would deliver more useable power overall. Notably, the next-gen pickups are expected to introduce a new Small Block V8.
3. High-Performance Model
GM needs a competitor for the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram RHO, which could be created by introducing a model cradling the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine.
4. New Sunroof Options
Currently, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra don’t offer an oversized or dual-pane sunroof, features that can be had from the competition. The big reason GM’s pickups don’t offer an oversized or dual-pane sunroof is down to the cab structure, which needs to be re-engineered to accommodate such a feature.
5. Antenna Placement
Speaking of the roof, the asymmetrically placed roof antenna needs to changed. The current placement is the result of assembly ergonomics, and the antenna could be moved to a more aesthetically pleasing central position with the addition of a new ergonomic chair on the assembly line, as GM Authority covered previously
6. Auto-Dimming Mirror
GM should include an auto-dimming passenger-side mirror as a standard feature in upper trims like the LTZ and Denali, enhancing the vehicle’s convenience features without a significant cost increase.
7. Plug-in Hybrid Option
The introduction of a plug-in hybrid engine option would cater to increasing need for fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly technology in the pickup segment, but would obviously result in higher cost and complexity. That said, GM Authority reported previously that GM is expected to offer a PHEV engine option in its next-gen full-size trucks.
8. Expanded Super Cruise Availability
The GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving feature is currently limited to higher trims (Silverado High Country, Sierra Denali). Expanding the availability of this feature across more trim levels is a no-brainer, as seen in the 2024 Chevy Traverse (LT, Z71, RS) and GMC Acadia (all trims). On this subject, the HD pickups should offer this option as well, as both HD models currently only offer adaptive cruise control.
9. 5G Connectivity
The integration of 5G connectivity in the next-generation pickups will support newer technologies like the Connected Camera feature, offering advanced vehicle connectivity and the latest infotainment goodies.
10. Feature Management
The Silverado and Sierra offer a wide variety of trim levels, packages, and options, providing a huge range of choices for customers. And that’s great, but with all that choice comes a high degree of complexity – complexity that’s exacerbated by feature constraints. Unfortunately, it seems as though feature constraints are a persistent problem at GM, making life harder not only for customers, but dealers as well, who have to navigate through the ever-changing constraint landscape. The end result is inevitably a degraded customer experience.

How about just building a higher quality truck instead of worrying about nonessential things like sunroofs or 5G connectivity ??? Perfect the engine, transmission and electrical so that there are not so many recalls. Hell, take out some of that crap so that you can actually use it as a truck!
You’ve got that right, we’ve gotten too far away from the truck part of the product:
1. Forget about the sunroof. Just another thing to break when the truck goes off-road (right??)
2. Get rid of the console shifter, put it back on the column where it belongs. Drinks go in the console.
3. End the partnership with Google. I don’t want them getting my data, and I’m not paying for a data subscription to use a navigation system.
I don’t see an issue with the 5.3, it’s certainly a great option and plenty capable today. It would be what I’d prefer if I were to buy a new truck.
I went to buy a 2023 Silverado and due to the fact that I couldn’t find one with an integrated trailer brake controller, tan interior, or get a better option package without having a console shifter, I bought a used 2020 instead.
I bought a new 23 Silverado LT. Didn’t have fog lights on it. Didn’t think it would be so difficult to get aftermarket fog lights for it. Cat get them although there is a part number. Can’t get them from a company that does accessories either. Something about plugging into the electronics could cause problems. This year long battle makes me want something that the average joe can accessorize.
Speaking of that, make the fog lights come on with the headlights. It’s kinda annoying having to push the button any time my headlights come on
You don’t need fog lights all the time. No use glaring them in people’s eyes.
Amen.
I bought my Custom Trail Boss in 2019(5.3) and I installed an oil catch can and a Range Technology AFM disabler,CAI and a Flowmaster FloFX muffler and shorty headers plus a Hypertech React throttle controller. After 5 years and 31K miles no lifter issues,no oil burn (I use Supertech 0W20 synthetic)and tons of torque…huh. I also spent $28 on Nilight fog lights off of Amazon and I installed them into the factory holes and plugged in the harness and switch in under an hour.Huh,if you’re not incompetent it is easy. I wouldn’t change a thing about my Custom Trail Boss,it’s awesome. It tows my bass boat and gets dirty when I want it to and I drive it to the Morenci Copper mine in AZ weekly. If you’re a sheep and take it to the dealer you get what you get,get smarter. The mods I installed were easy and a lot cheaper than an engine replacement.Duh….
Vehicles should have the optional ability to record all camera views onto a memory card or a thumb drive.
After all these years of Hard terrible seats, including the rear of crew cabs, please put nice cushy seats in your Silverados, as your competition trucks have great seats..So many complaints about your seats..
How about getting rid of DFM completely . This would solve the lifter & cam issues. They should also concentrate on quality like Toyota.
It actually would not. Current set of lifter issues are a post covid issue where the lifter bores are a few thousandths oversized. (GMA reported on this a week ago) this is a tooling issue. In the meantime, there are DFM engines from 2019/2020 that are going on 200K with no issues.
I want to see the new gen small block and active air damn. The Silverado currently has the highest air drag of any of the big three, yet decade old V8’s keep matching the competitions mileage.
They should NOT like Toyota go to a turbo set up where you have to pull the cab to access the engine and have a 32k repair bill…..Toyota quality is nowhere what it was in the 80s and 00s, even the Nissan Titan/Patrol is better than them now.
SHUT UP.
I have a 2022 Silverado 2500 Duramax crewcab with an 8’ bed. Love the truck but here’s what I would like to see improved. More comfortable seats and improved ride. Interior lighting is awful, particularly over the front seat console where you need it. And finally is there some reason they can’t build a crew cab half ton with an 8’ bed? What I really wanted was the half ton crewcab, 8’ bed, with the baby Duramax! Now that would be the truck
How about magnetic ride control like on the 2018 Denali/high county. Chevy is constantly using tighter shocks than ford, which makes them better tow vehicles, but worse empty.
Would be a nice option but should not break like it does on the Range Rover where it bricks the entire car…..
2 words, Range Rover
They can’t even build a reliable V6. Not like the engine configuration hasn’t existed since the 50’s.
The AJ V8 is alright but the other engines…. I am not sure.
I just want GM to fix the auto HVAC control so it doesn’t stop working every time I start the truck. I’m tired of having to turn it off and then back on to get it to work.
Decrease turning radius!! Problematic in parking, but more so off-road
Would like a 2500 with a short bed. Easier parking mostly to tow with.
Put the gear shift back on steering column. That way when you put it in forward or reverse gear it will be there. My 2024 gmc 1500 now does not always go into gear without having to select two or three times.
I traded off a 2013 GMC 3,0 Denali that almost backed over me few times because I didn’t push the damm park button , have a 23 Canyon that shifter is correct
This makes no sense as when you open the driver door it automatically goes into park. I know because I’ve tried it with mine. You’d have to have the door open and then deliberately shift it back out of park to override the automatic into park when the door opens.
Does it let you open the door while slightly rolling still? The number of farm jobs I do where I am going 5-10MPG, and have the door open to grab something before a complete stop are innumerable. If he’s opening the door, then stopping the vehicle, allowing forward momentum to open the door the rest of the way, hitting the park button at the same moment his butt leaves the chain (done that with column shifters all the time) then, yes, this is possible.
This isn’t possible with a Toyota. GM is one of the few that actually allow you to disable all the nany features that make old school driving impossible. That one of the reasons I stick with them. I can disable stop/start, auto collision waning, seatbelt to drive, auto locks and the rest of those annoying features when you need to use your vehicle as a side by side at 4 different sites in a day and it’s a waste of time to load and unload a UTV.
Please go back to extended cab, crew cabs are to big for the average pickup owner, I wanted to replace my 2017 GMC extended cab but got turned of with the size of the crew cab.
**GM Authority; please do a “what improvements would you like to see in the Colorado and Canyon”. **
Here’s one of mine:
Perhaps it just won’t fit but;
I would really like to see the 3.0L I6 LZ0 shoe horned into the Colorado and Canyon with the 10 speed.
That would be a massive win and would have zero competition.
These trucks need something that gets better mileage.
Would like to see them make it easier to put air in the rear inside dually tires. At present, you have to take the outside tire off to put air in the inside tire.
Also would like super-cruise to be available for the 2500 and 3500 Silverado instead of just the 1500.
Love my 08 ext cab 5.3.4×4 New ones are all crew cab, short bed and cost twice what I paid for mine. Light color choices benefit in socal. No paint fading for 14 years. Skittish about getting a new one with all the recalls and lack of choices.
Sounds like changing the plugs in a V8 Chevy Monza back in the 1970’s involved loosing the back two motor mounts so that you could access the spark plugs.
Time for a redesign, better engines, better interiors instead of the same old drab black interior, after having lifter issues with my 2021 TB, and infotainment issues with my 2022 TB, gave up and bought a ‘24 Colorado ZR2 . Get a whole lot more for the money.
keep the 5.3 and improve the seats
Just saw a new 2500HD double cab. You need to be 7 foot to climb into the thing, but if you’re over 5 feet you won’t fit in the back of the cab (unless you like your knees in your face).
Thoughts GM? Go any taller and you’ll need to offer factory ladders.
Dodge is once again showing up with the power! (Tungsten) GM before its too late lets see an engine that can compete with Dodge and Fords higher horsepower engines. I’ve been a GM loyalist all my life, but I’m ready to jump ship, for something with some balls! Yeah us guys do think power counts for a lot!
One more minor quibble is the low buttons just above the storage spot on the consol. Numerous times putting eye glasses or the such, a button is pushed. There is no light on the buttons to let you know the tailgate has been opened. I personally lost a cooler ( thank God it wasn’t on the highway) and I know of friends who have lost luggage and I have heard of worse losses. A better placement, tilt or indication a button is pushed would be a great safety feature.
1500s need a fuel tank option larger than 24-gallons. Ram has 33, Ford has 36, and Toyota has a 32-gallon tank.
Enough of this electronic gear selector in the console. Go back to an actual shifter like the column shifted trucks. I hate that adding leather upholstery kicks out the column shifter and puts the console selector with its counterintuitive park button. Bring back a crew cab opton for standard bed. Offer basic colors like red hot on all trim levels, not just WT, Custom, LT and ZR2.
You can get leather with the column shift with either the Silverado LT or the Sierra SLT.
You are aware that even the column mounter shifters are electronic, right? THey have been in gm’s trucks since around 2007 or so.
I realize that they send an electronic signal to the transmission, but this new console selector is my issue. I have a standard PRNDL shifter on my ’16 Colorado. That R/N/L/Push to Park bs in my big complain.
Need more color options. Same old shades year after year.
And a broader selection of interior colors. On one I was looking at you could only get one interior color with that trim option.
Henry Ford and IBM are GM’s consultants when it comes to interior colors.
I Agree with the poor lighting issues on newer vehicles. More lights up front inside would be great.
I would like to see the exterior colors extended to all trims and more and lighter interior color options for trucks.
I understand it is done with profitability in mind but last three GM trucks i bought I had to settle for a lower trim level
to get the color I wanted. Can’t see that is profitable move for GM.
I would like to see a couple of choices for rear axle ratios without having to buy the lower speed axles in an expensive package.
Supposedly my 6.2 gets better mileage with the 3.23 axle but I bought the Max Tow package to get the 3.42 axle and get better mileage than what I see on most 3.23 trucks. The forums seem to back that claim up mostly.
I would like to see a little half round passing mirror on the passenger side mirror
Get rid of the POP UP Ads so I can READ the Forum without having to close a window every couple of seconds Number ONE!!!!!!
SLT trim should come with the option of “Painted Bumpers”. I hate chrome. Another point is make the AT4 have a “DUEL WHEEL OPTION” which is what I wanted in 2021 but could NOT get!
These dam pop up adds are driving me crazy!!! Get RID of THEM!!!@!
I have had many GMC Sierra and HD trucks. GMC version always have smaller tire upgrade capability than the Chevy version. I don’t want a lifted truck just 33-35 inch tire options on an easy to get into truck.
where is the e-locker option and an expanded rear axle ratio option selection
I’ve had 5 or 6 new denalis and one AT4 as well as a a 2024 Denali 1500 with the 3.0 duramax. I love all of them except I find the drivers seats are very hard and uncomfortable. Never had any issues on the older (pre 2020) ones
Eliminate Active Fuel Management.
Get rid of the auto stop feature or make the default “leave the damned motor running”.
Let the fog lights remain on when auto high beams come on. Dark country roads and deer/critters need both on at once.
Bring back adjustable pedals, at least on higher trims.
Not possible for elimination of DFM or AFM. CAFE will fine them if they do that.
You want a long running motor right??? AFM/DFM actually prolong motor life if you’ve ever seen an AFM engine tear down. With the exception of the faulty LC9’s, AFM engines last longer because they run more efficiently. Less oil dilution, heat to break down the oil, carbon buildup, pump stress…
Interesting points. I appreciate it. Mine I believe is an LC9…..
Never HAVE TO HAVE A BLACK INTERIOR. Don’t want gray or beige, also. Back in the day a mono-painted truck with a gray or beige interior was considered a cheap utility type truck. At $75,000 I want some choices in colors. A tech delete option would be nice.
Looks like to me that the base models would come in a camel shaded color for hot weather conditions rather than the just Henry Ford black.
Fix the double cab and its continued deprived trim/ feature offerings. They get worse every year. Add an LTZ trim level and 6.2 V8 engine option to the double cab. Again.
Double cab 4×4 trucks with standard beds have always worked best for me.
I ordered a new ‘18 double cab LTZ w/ the 6.2 L86 engine. Even ordered the performance brakes. Love the trucks cab size, wheelbase and standard length bed.
I get that a double cab will likely sell less units than the short bed crew cab (especially in the low trim levels) but the standard bed shorter wheelbase double cab works very well for a number of purposes and applications vs. a short bed crew cab. At least it does for me.
The alternative for a higher trim standard bed is a crew cab with a long wheelbase. Definitely too long for my purposes.
Unique double cab LTZ premium components may be a shorter rear seat and door panels finished in higher level materials. Shorter floor and door insulation pads and a shorter premium carpet. Maybe 7 unique items?
I don’t see that as a major logistic cost impact. The 6.2 is easy.
Put me down for a new one!
Make available, as an option, a standard transmission in a 3/4 and 1 ton Chevy /GMC truck.
Couple of suggestions:
-Add more regular cab short bed trims, such as in LT or Custom Trail Boss / SLE/Elevation trims, with the WT having a V8 -option as well in short bed regular cab form.
-With the PHEVs (or even the regular trucks), there can be some sort of power generator system like on the MY25 RAM 1500, with a base 3.5 kW option and a 5/8 kW at higher trims.
-Add a payload meter so that the driver can know how much payload is being carried.
-Add an onboard air compressor for all the off-road oriented trims (Trail Boss/ZR2/AT4X or AT4).
-Try to add a high performance version to compete with the Raptor R.
-More interesting items- such as waterproof speakers that can be taken out or a portable flashlight built into the door.
-A winch being a factory option for offroad trims that can handle at least 13k pounds (Trail Boss/ZR2/AT4/AT4X).
-More storage compartments in the cab
Lifter failures are caused AFM – which saves a small amount of fuel under light load when engines don’t consume a lot of fuel anyway. Not everything that is new is also better. Same goes for start / stop technology: Engines don’t burn much fuel while idling to begin with, but what will years of unnecessary starting and stopping do to longevity?
Lifter failures are not very common, and usually occur for abused vehicles.
Ramaswamy – I don’t doubt that it’s less common in the real world than online, but it’s happening more now than before AFM, correct?
Complexity negatively impacts reliability every time, and how much fuel is being saved?
More than AFM was during the MY21 and 22 where there was a bad batch of lifters/valve springs (but not by much). I do not hear much about DFM failures in Qatar, so I suspect the failure rate has not changed.
Offer a full size spare tire & wheel option. The 17” spare tire and wheel as provided doesn’t fit over the larger front performance brake rotors and calipers.
GM’s solution is if you have a front flat with performance brakes is place the 17” spare on the rear and move the good full size wheel and tire to the front.
Changing one truck tire and wheel is tough enough. I’m definitely not doing a partial tire rotation on an abandoned railroad bed road in the cold dead of winter 25 miles from the nearest town.
WHY ARE WE ROCUSING ON THINGS LIKE 5G CONNECTIVITY????
I just want a reliable pickup. If I’m spending 50+k on a new truck, id at least want something where the radiator doesn’t blow up at 50k miles. Or the trans doesn’t need replaced at 58k miles. Or the lifters won’t blown themselves apart at 18k miles. Or I won’t be stranded with electronic parking brake issues at 8k miles. (Yeah, all real issues from myself or people close to me with 20+ GM trucks). My 19 silverado is the last GM product I buy until they can get their sh!t together. Give me a reliable engine, a smooth, reliable trans, and al-a-carte options where I don’t have to spend 3k on a package just to get something like fog lamps.
Maybe give me a lil more than a 24 gallon fuel tank too. Ram and Ford both offer 32 gallons.
Since I’ve started having issues with GM, I’ve bought both a 21, and 22 Ford and a 23 Ram. I’m putting my money where my mouth is.
Or maybe it was the way YOU maintained your truck as well.. RAM and Ford have plenty of problems on a similar or even larger scale…
New small block V8’s
Return of the 5.7L 350 motor with 450 HP/500TQ or something in that ball park
Offer a supercharger package from factory like ford does. Not everyone would want it, but give the opportunity to buy it.
Offer an “SS” sport truck. NOT everyone wants a lifted mall crawler!
Bring back the single cab truck!
How about some reliable engines to start followed by reliable transmissions that last. And competitive fuel economy numbers would be nice too. The 2.7T is rated for 17/18/19 in 4X4 models and the 5.3 has been downgraded once again to a mere 15/17/19. These are Direct injected engines with stop/start, fuel cutoff, multiple cylinder shutdown, 8 and 10 speed transmissions and plenty of other tech and literally every competitor has better figures with turbo V6’s and V8’s. Instead of eliminating the 5.3 how about a new next generation 5.3 which is badly overdue with more power and better mileage.
Next why can’t we have Custom and LT regular cab body styles? If they can make it in WT they can make it in other trims- no excuses. Also stop limiting paint colors and interior color choices on certain models and in addition restricting simple things like fog lamps and full sized spares.
A return of power pedals would be nice on higher trim levels and an SS high performance trim would be a nice addition as would a hybrid and plug in hybrid option.
Lastly some improved seats would be nice. GM’s current chairs are too narrow and too hard. They need more cushioning.
Even make a a V-6 or V-8 Turbo.
Producing some new engines would be good since it appears Ice vehicles will be around longer than predicted since EV vehicles are not as popular as some hoped for.
Totally agree about INTERIOR colors. Would shop other brands to stay away from Black.
I am SO tired of black interior. Have had my share. Please offer more light colored interiors.
Especially on higher trims. Why have only black choice for a high trim level ????????
I would even opt for white interior again. I had three vehicles with white interior and really liked them.
I understand not in a work truck but most trucks anymore are not purchased for work trucks.
Limiting interior and especially exterior colors for certain trims is very frustrating.
Why have to settle for a lower trim level to get the color you want.
I have a 2021 Sierra 6.2 and love the the truck. Great vehicle. Wanted a Denali but settled for SLT to get my red color and more chrome. Really like the 3.42 rear axle with the additional power and gas mileage.
A lot of those things I dont care a whole lot on, but I sure hope the 5.3 doest go away anytime soon. I realize lots of people have had trouble out of the DFM stuff, but the 2.7 is no where close to a replacement for the good old 5.3L.
Kill the 2.7.
Improve the 5.3
Supercharge the 6.2
I’ll add another thing… Let the 6.2 be an option across ALL trim levels. For cripes sake GM, DITCH the caste system already !
Good evening, I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 black I think The quality control of this vehicle built in Mexico, That’s terrible. Exhaust pipes didn’t even come out straight even by putting them in the right bracketing the paint has many flaws in it. Very disappointed. Backseat has a rattle put the seat up. It doesn’t rattle put the seat down it rattles it’s in the back of the upper part of the seat! I’m sure there’s other people that have the same issues had to fix my own tailpipe disappointed in GM. Thank you!
I agree with dumping the 5.3, I think the 6.2 needs to be replaced with something that could take the place of both, maybe 6.0 that puts out similar figures to the current 6.2 with a slight efficiency gain.
I think the ZR2 and high country should have an optional LT4 factory kit, personally I think the standard 6.2 is enough, unfortunately it just doesn’t grab the attention compared to the Raptor R or TRX, or even the RHO.
I somewhat agree with a hybrid/PHEV option as well, however from a driveability standpoint, I think I would rather it just be EV drive with an onboard generator, I think they could easily package into the frunk of the Silverado EV the 1.6 Whisper diesel engine as a generator, that should have enough power to keep it moving while using the 12k towing capacity very efficiently.
They need to stop messing around with optional low range for 4wd and go back to having it standard with 4wd like it used to be and stop tying it to a package. I understand 4Lo is hardly used by people who do not go offroad, and maybe not as well needed with the 10 speed transmissions, but I think it should still be included given how expensive the 4wd option is.
Honestly the 6.2 needs to be updated also, not just the 5.3. Our tremor f150 ecoboost will run circles around our 6.2 and gets way better mileage
How about more comfortable seats.. never will buy another Chevy until they stop making them feel like a sitting on bleacher seats. Most people do not passenger side auto dimming mirrors or 5g connectivity since those are all niche features. Toyota and Ford have more comfortable seats and better creakier comforts in their truck where GM is slowly getting better minus their seats… which keeps getting worse.
Want to compeat with the raptor Put the 6.2 In a single cab SWB as a limited adition. 2×2 0r 4×4
I have a 2016 LT Single cab SWB 4×4 It can not be purchased in 2024 model.I Went to ford and purchased a Single cab SWB with a 400 Hp coyote stright from factory delivered jusyt Shy of $40k Ford I belive now makes the only single cab V8 model avalable. So lets see a limeeted edition to beat the raptor Single cab SWB 6.2 avalable in both 2×2 and 4×4.
I prefer single cab since I work and Park in a office building There is not room for 4 door trucks and I dont need one. Since I wanted a recarnation of the ford Lightning I sent the ford tpo Steeda for the Thunder upgrade. Thats why I sugest making a 2025 Single cab 6.2 avalable with both 2×2 or 4×4 options. This limited edition should also incude the Denali or High country interiour. Something missing in the ford XL
People say to replace the 5.3 and 6.2 V8s and GM is reportedly coming out at some future date with a new, more efficient V8. Improved efficiency has been “achieved” in the past by such features as start/stop technology and Active Fuel Management. But as they say, be careful what you wish for because GM has a knack for “creating” problems like damage prone rocker assemblies, overheating, and high oil consumption with such” technologies”.
Hint GM: Take a page out of your own playbook from 1977 when you shrunk all the full size and intermediate cars. They sold better than anything before.Shrink the size of these monsters and realize a weight reduction of 500-600 lbs. The average size man can’t grab a grocery bag over the side rail of the bed, can’t pull the dip stick without a step stool, can’t wash the front windshield , wash or wax the hood and roof without a six foot step ladder, can’t change plugs or the air filter without a ladder, can’t easily put a foot into the bed even with sidebox bumper inserts and more. The 1500 is too big and the 2500 is freaking crazy huge. Bring the truck back to 1988- 1999 size . Your mid size Colorado and Canyons should be about full size. Just enlarge that stupid 5′ bed. We need more bed and less crew cab volume. Cut the sheetmetal bulk and trim the sucker down and it’ll be more efficient without engine trickery.
I like the thought, but because of how vehicle classification works for CAFE and EPA, vehicles will not shrink. Larger vehicles are easier to get compliant, all at the expense of the consumer in safety, cost to buy and cost to operate. Trucks especially are hit with this as it is difficult to make an efficient and attractive design with it.
I agree with the massive improvements in technology and packaging, compacts cars should provide all the space the average consumer needs, then reserve trucks again for work. But I do not think consumers will downsize because I think the average person just accepts debt to have what they want when they want it and at the same time complains about how expensive everything is.
Cost down engineering and slavish devotion to EPA bullcrap have ruined automobiles and trucks for decades. It makes everything less reliable and more expensive to repair when you bury a 5 cent part deep inside the engine. The 5 cent part built from the cheapest available materials fails and causes 5 or 10 other things to fail wiping out a 10K engine. Designed obsolesce meets social engineering.
If GM is smart, they would split the difference between 5.3 and 6.2 with an all new 5.8 with both port and direct fuel injection and at two different power levels. Naturally aspirated and without problematic components in stupid locations. Make it easy to maintain and repair. Make an engine with a design life of 10-15 years. But they won’t because they are dumb and are slaves to the EPA.
All the previous comments are great. Especially about getting back to being a truck.
I ha e a 22′ that I bought new. For the most part I love the truck. I would leave out the not so useful stuff, such as: the performance dial to switch between normal, sport, and off road.
The mirror lights? Never use them. Yhe navigation should run on its own rather than have to be hooked to phone for Google maps.
The split screen of nav and listening to, needs to show radio rather than just what my phone is casting.
Just changing those few things would be great start.
My new 2023 Silverado 1500 High Country 4×4 with 5.3 motor and 10 Speed trans is vibrating, shaking or shuttering from 5-80 mph!
Is there an issue still with the drivetrain?
I have been a Chevy person for over 50 years. I am going to Ford because they at least give us an engine with more horsepower GM needs to throw away the 5.3 with 355 hp. That sucks. They need to at least match Ford 5.0 400 hp it’s like Chevy gave up years ago. Ford can give you more horsepower more pulling power and better gas mileage wake up Chevy.
