GMC has ranked well below average in a new owner satisfaction survey.
According to Consumer Reports, GMC was ranked 22nd among 28 major automakers in the organization’s recent owner satisfaction study. Each of the brands studied was given a customer satisfaction score, with GMC scoring 65 points. GMC was ranked above Jeep, which scored 63 points and was ranked 23rd, and below Lincoln, which scored 65 points and was ranked 21st. Notably, Cadillac also scored poorly in the survey results, scoring 59 points to land in 24th.
At the very top of the list was Porsche, which scored 83 points, followed by second-placed Genesis, which scored 80 points, third-placed Tesla, which scored 78 points, fourth-placed BMW, which scored 73 points, and fifth-placed Subaru, which also scored 73 points. The bottom of list was occupied by Mercedes-Benz in 26th with 57 points, VW in 27th with 56 points, and finally, Infiniti in last place with 50 points.
The new Consumer Reports survey results are based on the organization’s 2022 Annual Auto Surveys, which includes data collected from more than 300,000 individual vehicles. The vehicles included in the survey range between the 2020 and 2022 model years, as well as a few 2023 model-year vehicles that were not significantly changed. Consumer Reports also indicates that some of the ratings were based on just a single model year.
Using this data, Consumer Reports then calculated owner satisfaction scores based on the percentage of owners that responded they would purchase the same vehicle again. Consideration was made for enjoyment, price, comfort, performance, and reliability. Ratings and scores for the various factors were determined by the percentage of owners that said they were very satisfied with their vehicle.
Notably, GMC also scored low in Consumer Reports’ annual report card in 2021, while last year, GMC was ranked as the second-worst vehicle brand in an industry analysis.

Another useless survey by picky owners who subscribe to CR. I bought a new 2012 Silverado in 2012. About three days later the battery died. It tested bad and was replaced. GM buys batteries by the millions and there was a bad one in the batch. If I were to be surveyed I would not count it against GM, Chevrolet or GMC but many will claim poor quality by the manufacturer. So what questions are asked by CR?
I still drive my 2011 5.3 LT 1500, with 160,000 miles. I did have an original factory installed battery failure at about 115,000 miles (2020), and had to replace some part in the fuel delivery system ($ 325.). Otherwise, a perfect truck. My daughter’s 2022 Tahoe with a 6.2 grenaded (lifters) at under a thousand miles, and before she got to the side of the road, it was knocking. Long story short, the dealership in Brawley, CA put her in a’23 Suburban for 3-4 months until a new complete motor with the upgraded lifters could be installed. GM flatbedded the Tahoe to her home in E San Diego and extended the warranty to 100,000 miles. BTW, her husband ordered two new Chevrolet Cutaway Vans. My son-in-law and daughter, as well as myself are VERY happy with GM and I have a’23 High Country on order as well. Happy families supporting GM.
That’s because 2015-2019 GMC Sierra have a lot of Tranmission problems. Mine failed at 66k miles. Not to mention the AC condensing unit also leaked because of bad welds. Sway bar links broke off. Oil cooler lines leaking etc. I can keep going. Never had so many issues with one truck.
If it was just battery issues nobody would cry. It’s transmissions, 8 and 10 speed, 5.3 engine oil ring failures, Output shaft failures, Brand new Corvette Z06 engines expiring. I have been a life long supporter of GM. I have what may be the last decent SUV they built, 05 Envoy Denali AWD with the 5.3 and a proper automatic transmission. After 2007 it all changed. So don’t tell the buying public you care GM. Your engineering and quality control is left wanting. Your too busy building EV. We don’t want EV it’s not ready and you can’t possibly build enough charging stations and the power infrastructure to support it. Your cutting your own throat. It’s 15 years out. Hybrids and Hydrogen get it right or loose.
I bought a 2021gmcsierra and a 2021 Cadillac XT5. The tailgate on the GMC truck falls down while driving (3 times so far) resulting in a dented tailgate which GM refused to fix. They said they could not find anything wrong with the tailgate even though they are aware of problems with water getting into the switch on the tailgate. The Cadillac has 5600 miles on it and would not crank. I called Cadillac service hotline and they towed my car 70 miles away to a Cadillac dealership when there were 3 GM dealerships within 20 miles of me. After 2 days with no loaner or rental, I had to drive 70 miles to get my car back after repairs. They should have towed the car back because like I stated before there were 3 GM dealerships within 20 miles of my home and one of those was a Cadillac dealer where I bought the car before the dealership decided to do away with Cadillac brand. The part replaced is common to most GM gas vehicles (fuel pump driver module) so any GM dealership could have fixed it.
Hi E. Palmer,
Do you have a 2021 HD Sierra or 1/2 ton and does it have the two piece tailgate or standard one. I am wondering because I have a 2021 3500 with the two piece tailgate and keep a bumper hitch in all the time that would damage the tailgate if it came down. Sorry to hear about the problems you were having. Hope all is well for the rest of your ownership of both vehicles.
It’s the 2 piece. I hate it.
So owners of other brands aren’t picky? Again, if gm is having battery problems more than most, then get a better supplier. It still reflects on gm either way.
Current Yukon had air intake hose clamp on diesel not tightened all the way from factory causing limp mode. Paint on current model and last one (2022) has hazy circles on door and hood. Rear seat clicking noise when driving over small bumps. Auto lift gate does not open sometimes when you press button on the gate.
Hel-lo people, this is why CR reports low marks from GMC owners.
Check recalls on Toyota for the past five years then compare the ratings that CR give them. All manufacturers have issues. Since the start of the pandemic there’s been a drop in quality control with ALL the manufacturers. Some are definitely worse than others but they ALL have issues!
George’s I’m with you I don’t know why CR are so hard on GM what I think is the owner of CR had a bad relationship with one of GM head personnel because all this junk from all manufacturer go bad at some point plus you have customers that just dog out stuff for the hell of it
CR get is reviews from users->the most critical users give the worst reviews->GM is winning sales from the most critical users->thus it is Actually that GM attracts the hardest buyers. A bad CR report isn’t a bad thing
CR has had it in for American vehicles since the 70’s when I was a subscriber. I’ll admit American cars were crappy then but you would think they were made by cave men to read their articles. Japanese cars were gold plated to listen to CR. I remember the first Japanese cars coming into this country were made from recycled beer cans. You could seriously dent a fender if you leaned on it, but as the years went by they improved their quality as well as American manufacturers. Anybody besides CR will tell you American is just as good as anyone else. The problem lies with Scary Mary and her management team.
GMC ranked low in consumer reports.
I own a GMC Denali (lemon)
My last GMC. (Have had 21)
Will never own a GM product again
Maybe GMC ranks low because for the last 2 years dealers have been charging above MSRP for problem laden vehicles that are missing items like parking sensors, seat heaters and vents, steering wheel locking devices, etc. all due to the chip “shortage”, but all the EVs that the manufacturers are getting government money for seem to not have any of these shortage issues. On top of that they have engine lifter issues, electrical problems, and lack of replacement parts with no idea when they will arrive, leaving customers who purchased their vehicles in good faith making payments on a vehicle that is sitting in a dealership lot waiting for months on parts. Now for a decently equipped half ton pickup consumers are now paying close to $80,000 with fees….for a pickup! No wonder GM is in the position it’s in. They’ve created this problem themselves.
I think the issues with valve lifter failure and 8 speed auto transmission were major complaints for pickups. I had all my lifters replaced at 4800 miles no problems since and 8 speed transmission has no problems and I really love the truck just hope it stays that way its 2021 sierra SLT.
Same thing with my Hyundai engine..3 to 6 months for a recalled engine. No Loner either.
@ Mark CTS V: What should have dealers done? Volume was way down and the overhead didn’t go down. Consumers were buying and reselling for a profit. Is it okay for the guy with no overhead to make the all of the money? Does the dealer sell for MSRP and go out of business? No one forced anyone to buy anything. My dealer sold every C8 Corvette at MSRP. We questioned the motives of each buyer. Just to make sure, they weren’t planning to flip them. All were keepers. However, last summer one buyer got us. He kept the car 15 days and flipped it. CarFax is a great tool. We followed the car, to the purchasing dealer, and it was advertised at $20,000 over MSRP and sold within seven days. We’re done. Sorry, no more Mr Nice Guy. No more sold orders. We’re ordering for stock only and it’s whatever the market will bare. In the end, no one has any respect for the dealers trying to do the right thing.
When an owner paid $80,000 for a truck he feels that nothing should ever go wrong with it. If it does he’s going to complain.
I wouldn’t mind having problems if GM and their dealers would stand behind them and fix them.
As of late neither is true.
I have an engine miss with no check engine light so they won’t fix.
I am getting a good solid 10mpg since first tank, they say that’s normal
That’s Active Fuel Management at its finest hour, of course that also depends on which model you have. Son in law has a ‘21 GMC SLT 5.3L non AFM getting 23 mpg on the highway 16 around town. His is a 1500 4WD, if yours is a 2500 or 3500 you’re getting what you paid for.
Who ever wrote this article is fun of sh-t
All the vehicles that I have owned have been great.
Mark has it right.
GM should be ashamed of themselves but they are not.!
Looking through the green colored glasses makes it all look better.
I have worked behind a GM parts counter for over 40 years and have never seen as little support to satisfy customer concerns as what I see now.
I can go back as far as 2007 based on the biased opinions against GM, bottom line is, if it’s not Subaru, BMW, Honda, Acura, Tesla or Toyota, your vehicle gets anywhere between Average, Worst Than Average or Much Worst Than Average ratings in CR’s opinion, to this day, their judgment has not kept me out of a Sierra yet.
Exactly. I remember back in 07 when i bought my Sierra they gave it “average” rating even though it had only been out one year in that body style, but they gave the new Tundra “excellent” overall rating and they weren’t even available yet!!! I will never forget that. My Sierra has been excellent, no idea what I’m going to replace it with all the new models are stupid expensive and huge too. Hearing of the later model issues does give me pause though, for sure.
No doubt cr is biased , my point is don’t give them any ammo
Unless CR is positive about GM and then show it to customers.
My experience having purchased a new Silverado in 2017? Terrible, I’ve made over $10,000 in repairs on truck that has been used lightly with under. 100,000 miles. I’m talking about replacing the transmission, back up camera, steering components blah blah blah. I expected better. Those of you defending GM while criticizing CR are full of crap.
Perhaps some of us were fortunate not to have the issues that you may have experienced with your truck, so yes, I will defend the Manufacturer.
Question, which plant manufactured your Silverado?
GeorgeS, it’s funny you say that “on the batteries.” I too, purchased a new 2012 GMC Sierra in 2012. Brand New, AND, 1 day later, the battery died. I called the dealership, they said to bring it in on Monday after 5PM. (I bought it on a Friday) After having to have a jump start to get to the dealership, they put it on their machine to check it out. Forty-five minutes later, “Yes, Sir you need a new battery, about two weeks to get one in.” I said, “Ok, do you have another new truck for me to drive?” They said No, they had nothing. They charged my battery and said they would call when it came in. For TWO WEEKS I had to run my battery charger on all night so I could get to work. It was the 2nd week of January, and we had snow almost every day. I was late for work three days. I even bought a “Battery Boost Box” so I could get going. Two weeks and they said they have the battery. I went to the dealership, they take the truck in. (They had to jump it) The manager come out, says they got the WRONG BATTERY! He said the 6.2 engine takes a bigger battery. I Yell, Scream, Swear! THREE WEEKS is what it took to get a battery for my truck! The Best part is when GM sent out one of their surveys asking what I thought of the dealership and how I was treated. I know after buying a new vehicle, those surveys mean a lot to the dealerships. I just wrote the TRUTH. When I went back to the dealership for the other warrantees, I was greeted by the shop manager stating: “We think you should go to another dealership for your warranty work.” I chewed this guy out and told how “F-Up” this dealership really is! I Yelled, “THREE WEEKS To GET A BATTERY! THREE WEEKS! And, YOU are MAD that I told GM the TRUTH!!” (This is when I found out how bad Some Dealers are)
Think that I’ve been on the phone with the zone office as soon as they told me that it’d be two weeks to get a replacement battery! The phone number can be had by “Customer Service” in the owners manual index.
2015 Sierra. Denali.
At 124K miles, the AFM system got me! Yea, I thought I was way past that issue.
Coulter Cadillac in Phoenix took 3 weeks and cost me a tad over $10k to repair. Replaced lifters, the bent push rods, new cam and gaskets.
Interesting, since the job is quoted for 3.5 days and around $5k to $6k.
I sent a letter to the dealer GM and didn’t even get an acknowledgement.
So what do you think I’m giving GMC for customer satisfaction?
Three guesses and the first two don’t count.
Love the truck…but….
David
Something else for you guys to chew on…in 2004 I bought a brand new Yukon XL SLT…loaded. Everything except rear dvd player, 4 wheel drive. Got every package they had. Paid cash for it. Got one heck of a deal!
Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. First GMC as well. For over 220,000 miles, that truck was perfect. Brakes still had 33% left from factory new. 5.3 didn’t burn a drop off oil. Was still getting 22-24 mpgs at 75 mph. Towed my sailboat multiple times across country!
Finally had to trade it in. I picked up a travel trailer. The trannie just didn’t have enough gears for the 3 tons of trailer. 2 tons of boat was fine… But not the trailer. The truck I bought? The Sierra mentioned above. I’ve put brakes, rotors, cooling, AFM failure and now thermostat, electrical gremlins and more. You should see the expensive, optional factory paint that’s flaking off!!
I’m having troubles thinking this truck was made by the same company that made the Yukon XL!
Completely different owner experience. Not for the good.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD…. WHEN IT’S FROM CONSUMER REPORT,. I G N O R E I T!
i have a yukon Denali and had several problems which GM took care of without any fussing or problems. when it was all over they extended the drive train warranty to 100000 miles and gave me 1000.00 in points to use for any kind of service on any kind of car. HOW MUCH BETTER COULD THEY HAVE GOTTEN. I have never been turned away by GM for any problem within the warranty period or Ford when I drove their products.
The “several” is the issue
several were the recalls that amounted to nothing
I Love my 2021 GMC SLT 3500 Dually. it only has 11000 km on it but the finishing is prefect and it runs great and pulls my 33 ft. trailer like it is not there. My dealer has been “outstanding” and I have been dealing with them since my 1998 Dually! It is too bad that customers who pay large sums of money get poor customer service which in my case was over $100,000 Canadian. Look around you, call around and you get put on “Hold” for extended periods of time to get a human to talk about a complaint. Signs of the times! With all the electronics in our vehicles today, many made by different companies it is a wonder they all play together to make the Body Control Module happy which controls everything. Everyone wants too many “bells and whistles” on their vehicles so the keep it simple principle has gone by the wayside. I have friends that have vehicles from many other car companies and they have the same issues with service and getting parts too. Try getting your RV serviced or a warranty repair!! Then you will know what frustration is!
My 2017 Silverado has problems AFM/DOD lifter failure with the 8 speed shutter but not switching brands .
First substitute for toilet paper shortages durid COVID was absolutely Consumer Reports automotive reviews due to them being a garbage company and they’re as dumb as a rock.
I still get consumer reports magazine. They asked me how I liked my 2012 GMC Sierra, and would I give a report on it. I did. I remember them emailing back and asking about the fuel economy. I wrote back stating: “I Know Your magazine does NOT like any vehicles made in the good old USA. That part I Hate about your magazine. I ONLY like it for when I am buying a washer and dryer, TV set, or something that I Don’t know about. I bought my truck with the Bigger horsepower engine to run! I put a programmer on it and a cold air induction and I Enjoy driving it! 13 to 19 m/p/g is fine with me. I haul some jet skis and an airboat. I LIKE it! What gets me is How YOU GUYS are bragging up a damn Toyota truck, giving All favorable remarks, AND IT ISN’T EVEN AVAIABLE TO BUY, YET!!!”
I hv had my 2004 GMC Sierra since 2004. I have had NO major issues with it at 265k miles. Normal wear and tear…ie tires, new battery, alternator, brake replacement. I love my truck.
