GMC Among Worst Domestic Brands In Consumer Reports 2024 Ratings

GMC didn’t fare very well in Consumer Reports‘ 2024 ratings. In fact, it was ranked as one of the worst brands on the list, slotting in almost dead last among the 34 automotive brands examined by the publication.

CR‘s annual brand rankings are based on a specific manufacturer’s average Overall Score. This metric is determined based on a combination of road test scores, predicted reliability and owner satisfaction data, as well as safety data for all of the models from each manufacturer brand. In order to be considered for the list, CR must have tested at least two vehicles from the brand’s lineup.

All told, GMC earned just 53 points, landing the automaker in 31st place, thanks to its 71-point road test score, below average predicted reliability, and average owner satisfaction scores. CR doesn’t recommend any of the three vehicles it put to the test while compiling scores, and to top it off, GMC doesn’t offer any vehicles considered to be “Green Choices” by the publication.

GMC’s lackluster rating places it second-to-last among domestic brands, only outperforming Jeep, which scored 46 points and slotted in last overall. GMC was also the worst-rated nameplate among its GM brethren, tailing Buick in 13th (69), Cadillac in 14th (68) and Chevy in 22nd (62). For comparison, the highest-ranked brand overall was BMW with a score of 82.

It’s not exactly a surprise that GMC was near the bottom of CR‘s list this year, considering that the automaker hasn’t done all that well in past studies. It earned low marks in the 2024 reliability study, indicating that owners reported experiencing quite a few problems with their vehicles. Back in 2023, the automaker scored poorly in terms of owner satisfaction, too.

However, the publication isn’t entirely negative toward Big Red. It recognized the GMC Acadia as being an exceptionally quiet vehicle, commending the crossover for responsive handling and a smooth ride. Additionally, a survey found that GM vehicle owners are generally satisfied with their vehicle’s integrated infotainment systems.

  1. Fun fact. Consumer reports only takes data from subscribers to their magazines. That is why foreign brands, especially Asian brands do so well in their magazine.

Most Union worker have pride in what they do and feel like they apart of something special and needed by consumers and enthusiasts. I worked at GM for 31 years and loved being in the paint shop, but from all the bending and continuous twisting and from spraying 60 door jams an hour, my back is in chronic pain. And I should have been making minimum wages if you Union haters had it your way. Don’t comment on something you k ow nothing about with your soft Hands and cold heart.

My 2002 2500 Silverado was never in the shop for a repair for 20 years before it got a corroded contact that sent a signal to the trans. when you started the truck. After it was repaired I traded it in on a 2022 Silverado 3500 Dually. I take extreme care of my vehicles. If you do that they’ll last a really long time.

I am having to replace the engine. GMC is aware the engines are faulty and will not do anything about it. Not to mention their customer service and customer care department are very poor.

  10. I will try to make short as I can. Having been a CP’s subscriber for about five years I was sent a magazine where they tested lawn mowers. The lawnmower they chose for first place scored lower than the one they didn’t choose that should have been in first place. They did the same on a weed eater that scored lower making it first place. I called my brother who was a die hard CR’s subscriber like myself and asked him what he thought about it. He pointed out a couple other products that he had found with the same issues of being knocked out of first place by a lower scoring product. But I main problem was they send out questionaries for subscribers asking most every question about the product from cars to any other thing you might own. Might own because even if you don’t own the product they have no way of knowing if you do or don’t own something but they take your word on it. So let’s just say you don’t own a GM vehicle and you hate them but you love Fords as an example. You could score the GM vehicle very low and make up un true negative things about it. But remember you love Fords even if you don’t have one you can make up all positive things ranking it higher than even a Toyota. This hurts the score of something you don’t even own that CP’s used back when I subscribed to their magazine. I thing you get my point and the scores you gave if you did to something something like a GM or Toyota vehicle is used against them but the positive ones you gave a Ford that you might not even own is used positively to rate it by them. This has been sometime ago so I am not sure how they do it now. But I felt receiving something in my email to rate something I positively didn’t own was sickening. If your an honest person all is fine but if your not than their questionaries they sent out was not an accurate way to score anything in my opinion. Thank You BTW I am 79 years and I have owned most ever brand vehicle built and I have found you can get a good one or not so good it’s the luck of the draw. And how does CP’s score things like cars that haven’t even been out a full year yet. They test vehicles and compare them but their guessing on reliability and by their questionaries they send out. Sorry for such a very long comment.

  25. Interestingly enough, I took my new GMC Terrain in to the GMC dealer where I bought the vehicle, for it’s first an oil change and tire rotation and while I was there waiting, was told it would about 2 to 3 hours (normal) so while waiting I was curious, this was early morning and I thought to myself “I wonder what those other dealers products had waiting in line for service that morning, they couldn’t all be just in for a simple routine maintainance could they”?
Well, I was quite surprised when I wandered down the street and across the street for a sneak peek at what was waiting in their service department line, this included Toyota, Mazda, Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Kia, BMW and Mercedes Benz.
So what were my personal findings? As I walked the dealers various driveways, listening and peeking at the cars in line, I was somewhat surprised that almost all of these multiple manufactures vehicles had some sort of warranty work that needed to be taken care of, nothing major, nothing came in on a flatbed tow truck while I was wandering around, and there were a few of these vehicles that just needed their normal service done. Not exactly staggering news, I think this pretty much proved to me that most newer makes of vehicles are fairly decently made and their customers fairly happy with their purchase or lease of their favorite make and model.
This also proves (again to me) that not all foreign makes are 100% better than Domestic makes, even almighty Mercedes Benz had some warranty work needing to looked at, same with BMW…these expensive makes were not all 100% perfect, and we were talking some expensive high end German products here!
This of course was just a one morning of one day observation, who knows, the next day could have been a disaster for any one of these makes, but for the most part, I don’t believe that GMC deserves the negative finger pointing that CR magazine seems to relish throwing at GMC, and of course no one manufactures products are “perfect”, they all have their good days and their bad days when it comes to warranty concerns, and as a side note….yes, even Mighty Mother Toyota has problems and concerns, but perhaps those warranty concerns are handled more quickly or effectively than say, Mercedes Benz or BMW. Anyway, this was sort of fun, and when I wandred back to my GMC dealership to pick up my Terrain Denali, it had been washed and properly taken care of within the 3 hour time frame as promished, so I left the dealership happy and content that I had made the right purchase for me and my wife (it’s actually her vehicle, and she chose and she loves it!) but then again, this could probably have been said for any of the other auto dealerships I visited on any given day. Okay, ‘Nuff said…you buy or lease whatever makes you happy that you’ve made the right decision and one more thing…owner loyalty to any given product is the best way to prove a products worth, and this is my third GMC vehicle purchase in the last 10 years and so far, it’s been a real love affair with GMC products, are you listening and paying attention, Consumer Report Magazine? I certainly hope they are, but I sort of have my doubts they’ll change their minds for to do so would make them look rather foolish but mark my words, with a few months, GMC will somehow end up higher on their quality list and some other poor manufacture will be hit with the lousy lable that has befallen the GMC brand. Time will tell I guess.

By the time it hit 50k they finally admitted it had an issue. They recommended we change the oil at 2500 miles due to the fact there was about a qt left at that mileage. I was never so insulted. I understand all the guidelines on these new motors with emissions and everything. But to not take care of a loyal customer that purchased over 5 new cars and trucks over a 6 year span is down right ignorant. Will 100% never purchase another GMC again!!

Example … a GMC Sierra is basically the same as a Chevy Silverado. My 2006 Sierra has been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Original everything except tires, brakes, alternator, starter, and brake lines at 190k. Back in 2006 it was rated one of the worst. Interestingly the Silverado had much better scores on the same parts like drivetrain, ride quality, fuel economy. I’d use them for reviews on a toaster, but do your own research when it comes to a car.

  55. John it’s like the old saying no fleet vehicle is a good vehicle! Fleet vehicles are often used and abused, oil changes and maintenance often go way over schedule, people speed and break hard with them, DEF systems are often forgotten about like oh we forgot to buy fluid. You can’t compare a fleet vehicle to someone actually owning and properly maintaining a car or truck even if it’s used for work. I often see work trucks from GMC and Chevy that not only look great but run excellent. Now I am not saying you lied but your comparing apples and oranges! You must hate your job

FLEET VEHICLES get abused…you can’t base a home owner garage kept car or truck on a fleet vehicle that gets used like a washed up hooker, I never said he was lying it’s a fact that most fleet vehicles are abused beyond belief it’s not like my friends truck that sits in a garage unless it’s being used it’s always washed, regular oil changes also nobody is going no is 90 miles an hour in it and driving like the dukes of hazard I have worked with fleet vehicles before the workers attitudes usually are well it’s not money to fix it if it breaks the people who drive them don’t give a $hit they lie about what they did so they won’t get fired or if something is wrong not writing on your driver’s report.

company are not reliable. That’s why older machines and heavy trucks hold their value. No emissions BS to shut you down.

If your fleet doesn’t tow why not get gas engines? If your payload is extremely high… you’re in luck, the gas trucks have a higher payload capacity.

  57. ThankU Cooper , I found your article on March 1 to be very enlightening. Especially since my wife loves her GMC brand vehicles. I’m a retired pipefitter & a proud retired member of the UAW ! I also am a GM lover but switched to ford back in 2011. I have had a lot of small to mid size problems with my fords. I purchased 2 since 2011 . A 2011ford F-150 king Ranch and a 2016 ford F-150 Lariat . The Lariat I ordered in the way I wanted it but I am pretty certain that my next truck will be another GMC pickup ! I also read in the comments section that the reason you almost never see an American made vehicle at the top of CR’S report is because CR is against the union made label ! I’m not a consumer reports fan and CR being opposed to unions explains a lot !!!!! I try to buy union made products especially with big ticket items Everytime I buy ! That’s why I switched from GMC to Ford in 2011 . All the vin. numbers on GM light truck crew cab pickup (1500) models were only made in Mexico and I refuse to buy unless it’s has a union label on it . Buy the way a vin # that starts with a 3 is made in Mexico . A vin. # of 2 is made in Canada (CUAW) and a vin. # 1 is United States . Now I told my dealer that if I order a new GM pickup and it comes in with a vin number of 3 I will refuse to take it ! Thanks for letting me vent ! I thoroughly appreciated your comment about CR !

    1. I’m the same. Chevy and GMC trucks. Could they be better, probably but they have enough reliability and redeeming qualities to keep us buying them.

  59. I have a 2017 and a 2020 gmc terrain denali and both have defective parts on them and the dealer will not warranty the problems. The 2020 has so much rattling driving down the road you can hardly hear the radio. The dealer says it is the sunroof and said they are not going to put a new sunroof on it and would only document it in their file. It’s not the sunroof it is rattling underneath. My 2017 had a clogged ac line and their technical bulletin showed there was a problem since 2013. It cost me over $800 and 2 dealers still didn’t fix the problem. I took it to a local repair shop and they fixed it for $60. GMC and there dealers are unreliable

    1. Ken DeCesare the problem is the stealerships don’t care about our problems that’s why if it’s not warranty work my 2020 Equinox goes to my mechanic it’s way cheaper and I know the guy for many years I trust his work. I know it’s frustrating but dealerships from all manufacturers don’t want to bother with warranty work they try to get out out of the work with lies like snakes ready to slither away…I never ever trust a dealership.
