The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Korea sales fell to their lowest level ever with a further drop in January, further deepening the Bowtie brand’s negative performance in the South Korean market while also representing its third consecutive monthly contraction. The 1,021 deliveries during January are the lowest figure ever recorded by Chevrolet in South Korea, surpassing the prior low point of 1,344 deliveries during January 2022.
The decline in Chevrolet Korea sales during January was driven by lower sales of most models, including the domestically-built Chevy Trailblazer, which has been the brand’s local best-seller. After posting healthy gains in November and December 2022, the subcompact crossover again lost momentum and entered the new calendar year in the red. Similarly, the Chevy Colorado and Malibu suffered double-digit drops, cumulatively sapping another 341 units year-over-year.
In contrast, the Chevy Spark and Traverse were the Bow Tie’s only models to be in the green in January. The Spark city car registered an astronomical four-digit increase, but didn’t have a major impact to the bottom line since the year-over-year comparison was to a very low volume of 23 units. For its part, the increase in Traverse sales was also not significant, since it rose from another low result of just 25 units sold during the same month last year.

Comments
Conversely, the Koreans in the good ol’ U.S.A. are on a tear. GM better watch its back.
Agreed. Genesis now has more luxury sedans than Cadillac, which is saying something.
South Korea (Hyandai & Kia) pack a lot of value and reliability. I didn’t enjoy Sonata driving dynamics on rental but disliked Camry’s even more and th iui s factor doesn’t seem to hurt sales.
Malibu will have trouble in its segment. Same with Nox going up against redesigned Sportage. I like the way GM cars handle but, unfortunately, they lack attention to detail (interiors/exteriors) so that the product just doesn’t feel special.
Soon GM will quit S Korea. GM is basically an Americas brand thriving at home and LATAM plus China. If war ever happens with China then GM best merge with another automaker like Honda or Renault.
