Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Acadia sales enabled the model to rise three spots from essentially last place during the previous quarter to 11th in mainstream large three-row crossover segment among 14 models when ranked by sales volume.

The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) maintained the lead as sales rose 25 percent for 41,996 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot in second with a 38 percent swell to 36,832 units. The next four entries were all close, each with around 28K deliveries. These include the Chevy Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), the Acadia’s corporate cousin, which jumped to third place in spite of a 12 percent dip for 28,390 sales. The two models from the Hyundai Motor Group took fourth and fifth, respectively, with the Kia Telluride posting a two percent dip to 28,054 units and the Hyundai Palisade with a 44 percent jump to 28,045 units. The VW Atlas placed sixth with a 13 percent bump to 28,041 units. Meanwhile, the Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) took 11th as sales slipped six percent to 14,455 deliveries.

Notably missing near the top is the first-ever Toyota Grand Highlander, one of two entries from Toyota. In spite of previously taking the market by storm since its introduction just a year ago, sales evaporated during Q3 after a stop-sale order and production shutdown over the summer due to a recall involving a faulty driver’s side curtain airbag. Consequently, the Grand Highlander (somehow) recorded 24 deliveries during the quarter, falling from third place previously to next-to-last just ahead of the discontinued Mazda CX-9. Meanwhile, the “regular” Toyota Highlander placed eighth as sales slipped five percent to 17,179 deliveries.

The mainstream large three-row crossover SUV segment expanded six percent to 286,557 deliveries during Q3 2024, meaning GMC Acadia sales underperformed the segment average.

For informational and comparative purposes, we’re also providing sales figures for crossover models that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Acadia and Traverse, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with them, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating are sold at a price point similar to the Acadia, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models are sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

The GMC Acadia appears to still be recovering from a generational changeover. Though sales increased from the previous quarter, they are still in the red for the quarter, placing 11th while corporate cousin Chevy Traverse placed third.

Looking ahead, we expect GMC Acadia sales to rebound in the fourth quarter of 2024 as well as in subsequent quarters throughout 2025, so long as production remains steady.

About GMC Acadia

The all-new 2024 GMC Acadia introduced a wealth of updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model year, including larger dimensions, more tech, and a new turbocharged engine, along with a bunch of new safety features and heated wipers. Critically, the third-generation Acadia is available in several specific trim levels – base Elevation, off-road-oriented AT4, and range-topping Denali. Additionally, the Elevation trim exclusively offers a new Black Edition package, and a Denali Reserve package takes the trim to the next level.

For the first time ever, the next-gen 2024 Acadia offers GM Super Cruise, the automaker’s semi-autonomous driving assist technology, thanks to being equipped with GM’s new Global B electronic architecture. Critically, Super Cruise is available on the 2024 Acadia Elevation and AT4 trim levels, making the Acadia the very first GMC vehicle to offer Super Cruise on Elevation and AT4 trims and the first to offer Super Cruise on all trim levels.

The 2024 GMC Acadia is motivated by the turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine as the sole powertrain, rated at 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. Here’s why the 2024 GMC Acadia uses a 2.5L turbo engine instead of a V6.

Output is directed through the GM eight-speed automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive offered as optional on Elevation, Elevation Premium, and Denali. AT4 trims are equipped with a unique Active Torque Control AWD system as standard.

The 2025 GMC Acadia arrives with notable updates, changes, and new features, including the addition of 8-passenger seating capacity while removing a standard lumbar adjustment. It also loses these two paint colors but offers a new Adventure Package.

  1. Who wants a whiny little turboed 4 cylinder in an otherwise nice vehicle? Not me!
I’ll stick with my 23 Acadia with the 6. That at least has a little growl when you step on it to go. Plus my friend’s would laugh at me into total embarassment when I told them it was a 4. I’d never live it down.

    1. Huh? So the less powerful and worse driving 6 is the way to go? I think not, people want progress. The ONLY knock on the 2.5 is the sound, that is it, otherwise in every area is hands down beats the old 6. People who shop this class of vehicle usually don’t even know what engine is in it, let alone care as long as it moves well which is does. Your friends are laughing at you because you drive a women’s family CUV, not your engine size pal… Give me performance over cylinder count any day which the 2.5>3.6.

  2. The low sales volume is 100% due to not enough inventory. I have had one on order for just over 2 months now and the factory has not even pulled it from the preliminary orderbank to the placed order (where they start lining it up for production). Also there is not a single one on the lot, none currently in transit, every one that has landed was sold within a few days. I don’t know where they are going but to release a new vehicle and then have no production capacity is beyond ridiculous. I would look at a Traverse but they are even harder to get. their sales numbers suck but it is not due to demand.
and by the way, the turbo 4 kicks the pants off the 3.6 liter V6 in every measurable way except sound and I don’t give a dog squat about what my neighbors think about sound. Just Saying
