The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Korea sales continued their downward spiral in May, accumulating 15 consecutive months of contraction as a result of ongoing supply problems caused by the global shortage of semiconductors. Besides being down on a year-over-year basis (when compared to May 2021), the performance also represents a drop month-over-month – when compared to the 2,951 new Chevys sold in April in the South Korean market. Hence, the May results set a new, sub-3K low for the Bow Tie brand.

The decline in May was caused by decreases in sales of the Spark’s two best-selling vehicles in the country – the Chevy Trailblazer and Spark. Although both were in the red on a year-over-year basis, the Trailblazer was impacted the hardest, recording a measly 876 deliveries. That resulted in the subcompact crossover losing the best-selling spot within the Chevy brand to the Spark and its 1,247 deliveries. Additionally, the Bolt EV and Traverse also saw significant declines in their respective sales volumes.

The Chevy Camaro, Colorado and Equinox were the only Chevy models that were in the green during the month. The performance of the mid-size pickup was the most impressive of the three, posting a triple-digit increase to 320 units, placing it as the third best-selling Chevrolet model in South Korea. Additionally, the new Bolt EUV and Tahoe saw their second month of registrations, with the full-size SUV posting 100 sales during its first full month on sale.
