The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Korea sales registered a new decline in May. The downward performance was mainly the result of the ongoing shortage of semiconductor chips, which has led to diminished production at GM plants in South Korea and elsewhere around the world. As a result, May 2021 sales result represent the third consecutive monthly drop of Chevrolet deliveries in the South Korea market, after 31 percent drop in March and an 18 percent decrease in April.

Seven of the eleven models offered by Chevrolet in South Korea saw lower sales volumes in May. That includes the brand’s best-seller – the Chevrolet Spark. While the minicar regained its position as GM Korea’s best-selling vehicle in May, it suffered a notable double-digit contraction in overall sales volume as a result of decreases supply and availability. Other models that suffered a particularly negative impact include the Colorado and Labo, which is being discontinued after almost three decades in that market.

By contrast, the new Chevrolet Trailblazer and three other Chevy nameplates managed to increase their sales on a year-over-year basis. Despite lower unit production at the GM Bupyeong plant, the Trailblazer subcompact crossover posted a healthy 40 percent increase in sales volume in May while maintaining a healthy level of demand among younger buyers. Meanwhile, the Bolt EV and the low-volume Camaro muscle car posted noteworthy triple-digit increases.
