Competitive Sales Comparison
GMC Savana sales decreased during Q2 2020, posting a 69 percent loss in sales volume during a time when sales of its corporate twin – the Chevrolet Express – also fell 58 percent. Notably, the Express sold over three times as many units as the Savana during the same time frame. The performance places the Savana in fifth place in its segment by sales volume out of a total of six rivals.
Leading the segment, and by a wide margin, was the Ford Transit in first place (see Ford Transit sales), followed by the aforementioned Chevy Express (see Chevrolet Express sales) in second, the Ram ProMaster in third, the Ford E-Series (see Ford E-Series sales) in fourth (the model is available exclusively in the cutaway configuration), and the GMC Savana in fifth. The Nissan NV brought up the rear in sixth place. All models in the segment posted a decrease in sales during the quarter.

Meanwhile, GM’s offerings – the Chevy Express and GMC Savana – saw combined deliveries of 11,990 units for 25 percent share – significantly less than that of The Blue Oval.
The full-size mainstream van segment, which includes passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab models, contracted nearly 55 percent to 46,537 units in Q2 2020, meaning that Savana sales during the quarter contracted faster than the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The GMC Savana (and the Chevy Express) is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s. In fact, the duo is the oldest vehicle in the segment, and by a wide margin. They’re also the oldest GM vehicles currently in production.
We attribute the drop in Savana sales during the second quarter of 2020 to two complications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic:
- Sub-par supply at the dealer level as a result of production downtime lasting roughly two months, preventing dealers from selling the vehicle and fulfilling fleet/commercial orders, and
- Sub-par demand, as some companies scaled back plans to purchase new products or update their fleets
Though these two circumstances impacted the entire industry and segment, they appear to have had a more pronounced impact on the Savana, causing the vehicle to nearly slip into last place in its segment.
Nevertheless, the Savana and Express duo continue to perform relatively well in the marketplace, holding their own in the segment. The two vans have a strong reputation for being hard-working, trustworthy and reliable. Further helping the Savana (and Express) are well-established offerings from upfitters that prepare or modify the van for various commercial-purpose duties. The accessible purchase price and low operating cost is another factor responsible for the ongoing success of the Savana/Express duo.
Additionally, the introduction of the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel LWN engine and 8-speed automatic transmission (M5U), introduced for the 2017 model year, has generated increased interest in the product. Looking ahead, the Savana will receive several improvements for the 2021 model year, headlined by the replacement of the archaic Vortec 6.0L V8 L96 engine (and its LC8 gaseous variant) with the new 6.6L V8 L8T motor.
As far as we know, GM plans to produce the Express and Savana in their current forms until at least 2023, as GM Authority was first to exclusively report. That timeline could be extended. An indirect replacement for the Savana and Express is part of GM’s electric vehicle plans, though an exact timeline surrounding the model’s arrival is currently unclear.

Unless GM updates its full size vans they will soon be irrelevant in their market segment much like what is happening to Camaro. The market does not stand still and newer designs with more models, features, flexibility etc. will prevail.
The longer you play around with your 30 year old express and GMC savanna vans the more sales you lose people don’t want that old of a chassis it’s time for a update not pushing it of till 2023
The height of lazyness by Mary Bara and her duds. Every tradesman is moving to Ford for the high stand up roof. Every Amazon delivery van is a ram. Amazon wants a electric van but again GM is too lazy. GM is so happy being in 3rd place for everything. Cant sell a model? Just give up and let someone else take the sale. No leadership, sales do not seem to matter anymore. Make a high roof van, why is it so hard?
I’m glad it hasn’t been updated. Buying one as soon as I can get the 6.6L gas in Canada. The last of the greats. The last of the North American styled vans.
I love my savana. I have the beautiful chrome package which dresses it up very nicely. It is perfect for me as a Drapery installer. Going to the nicest homes in Palm Beach, FL. This is the 1st savana although previously had 4 chevy express vans for work and even 2 Astro vans for my family. I really need this size van though as I can’t use a smaller van because of long draper rods I need to transport along with hanging the drapes on hangers which fit perfectly. I don’t like the taller vans because sometimes I need to pull into a parking garage or under a carport. Can’t use a pick up truck because it might rain on thousands of dollars worth of draperies. GMC has the best quality and the vortec engines are bulletproof. My doors open nice and wide unlike my friends ford van that he has to get his hands dirty unlatching the hinges to open his up wide. Plus his ford van leaks water into the van. He is ready to go GMC soon. I will be seriously looking at the 2021 savana vans with the 6.6
Chevrolet is never going to be in the lead with there vehicles there always playing around 3 base and never get to home plate
