Competitive Sales Comparison
Despite the decline in the volume of units sold, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales continued to dominate the segment during the first quarter of 2020 in the United States, with a combined 29,898 units sold (20,403 units of the Tahoe and 9,495 of the Suburban). The Ford Expedition took second place in the segment with 19,790 deliveries (see running Ford Expedition sales), ahead of the Tahoe/Suburban’s corporate cousin – the GMC Yukon – in third place (see running GMC Yukon sales). It’s worth noting that Expedition sales figures include those of the regular-length Expedition (Tahoe competitor) and the extended-length Expedition MAX (Suburban competitor), while Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales are reported separately.

The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales in the first quarter enabled the Bow Tie brand to maintain its long-standing status as the undisputed sales leader in the segment. Every model in this segment saw a decrease in sales, though the Toyota Sequoia reported the largest decline with 42 percent.
We primarily attribute the drop in Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe deliveries during Q1 to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reduced sales for the entire industry. Additionally, it’s likely that two other factors negatively impacted sales of the ‘burban and Tahoe:
- The UAW strike during the fourth quarter of 2019, which idled production for at least 40 days, resulting in less available inventory for dealers and the inability to fulfill retail, fleet and commercial orders. Notably, the strike also set back the reveal and launch of Chevy’s all- new, 2021 model year full-size SUVs.
- The announcement of the aforementioned all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. With consumers aware of these next-generation models, some might be waiting for these new models to arrive before making their purchase, though Chevrolet will likely attempt to sway that via higher-than-usual incentives on the outgoing, 2020 models.
Before the all-new models arrive on the ground, Chevrolet will likely combat the newer Ford Expedition with higher rebates on the outgoing Tahoe and Suburban. In fact, the current-generation Tahoe/Suburban turn six years old for the 2020 model. The all-new models should launch in the fall of 2020, though the aforementioned Coronavirus outbreak may lead to a delay for the new models.
