The 2020 GMC Sierra receives minor updates to the Sierra 1500 light duty model, while the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD (heavy duty) models undergo a complete overhaul (redesign and re-engineering).

Mechanical
- 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard on 4WD Denali models equipped with the 5.3L EcoTec3 L84 V8 engine
- For the 2019 model year, these models were paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission

- CarbonPro Edition (initially launched for 2019 model year) continues to be available on AT4 and Denali models, exclusive to Short Bed, Crew Cab models, and includes:

2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD & 3500HD
As mentioned, the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty receives a complete overhaul (redesign and re-engineering), aligning it with the exterior, interior, convenience and capability features of the all-new, fourth-gen Sierra 1500. As such, the all-new Sierra HD model is the strongest, most capable Sierra ever built, with available max towing capability up 52 percent to an enormous 35,500 pounds.
“Trailering is the most important consideration for Sierra Heavy Duty customers, and the new features and technologies in the 2020 Sierra HD make it easier than ever to hitch a trailer and tow it confidently,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, vehicle chief engineer, Heavy Duty Trucks. “We’ve developed this new truck to offer the greatest trailering experience ever offered by GMC.”
