Following Distance Indicator is a General Motors active safety technology that helps a driver keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. The technology is useful in avoiding rear-end collisions from tailgating and also in not violating vehicle following distance laws.
The Following Distance Indicator uses the vehicle’s Forward Collision Alert sensors to provide the driver with following time to the vehicle they are following, thereby letting them know if they are following much too closely. Vehicles equipped with the Following Distance Indicator feature have a section within the Driver Information Center that displays Following Distance.
If the system detects no vehicle ahead, or the vehicle ahead is out of sensor range, then dashes will be displayed. The system displays a minimum following time of 0.5 seconds.
If a vehicle equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control has a selected cruise set speed, then the Following Distance Indicator display will not be shown.
