GM Korea Sales Decrease 11 Percent In November 2019

GM Korea sales decreased 11 percent to 7,587 units in November 2019 compared to November 2018 results. Sales fell at both of GM’s brands offered in South Korea – Chevrolet and Cadillac.

Chevrolet sales decreased 10 percent 7,473 units:

Chevrolet Bolt EV sales increased 27366.67 percent to 824 units
Chevrolet Camaro sales increased 13.64 percent to 25 units
Chevrolet Colorado sales totaled 472 units
Chevrolet Damas sales decreased 25.64 percent to 261 units
- The Damas is a small van originally introduced by Daewoo, which GM subsequently bought in the late 1990s
Chevrolet Equinox sales decreased 34.29 percent to 161 units
Chevrolet Impala sales decreased 64.16 percent to 81 units
Chevrolet Labo sales decreased 17.19 percent to 342 units
- The Labo is a line of small vans and pickups introduced by Daewoo, which GM subsequently bought in the late 1990s
Chevrolet Malibu sales decreased 53.12 percent to 775 units
Chevrolet Spark sales decreased 20.25 percent to 3,162 units
Chevrolet Traverse sales totaled 322 units
Chevrolet Trax sales decreased 23.17 percent to 1,048 units
The Chevrolet Aveo, Cruze, Orlando, Captiva and Volt have been discontinued in South Korea

Cadillac sales decreased 44 percent to 114 units:

Cadillac ATS sales decreased 100 percent to 0 units
- The vehicle has been discontinued and is being replaced by the CT4 on the low end and CT5 on the high end
Cadillac CT6 sales decreased 72.17 percent to 32 units
Cadillac CTS sales decreased 31.25 percent to 22 units
- The vehicle has been discontinued and is being replaced by the CT5 on the low end and CT6 on the high end
Cadillac Escalade sales increased 54.55 percent to 17 units
Cadillac XT5 sales increased 53.57 percent to 43 units
The Cadillac XTS and Escalade ESV are not offered in South Korea

In the first eleven months of 2019, GM Korea sales decreased 18 percent to 69,193 units.

The GM Authority Take

GM Korea sales decreased once again in November, thereby representing seven consecutive months of double-digit drops in sales volume. However, last month’s result represents the smallest monthly sales contraction that the company has experienced thus far in 2019. This circumstance was caused by a significantly less pronounced decline in Chevrolet sales, which managed to post the lowest decrease of the year. Meanwhile, Cadillac also recovered a little from the huge fall it suffered in the South Korean market during the month of October.

While most GM vehicles in Korea suffered significant decreases in sales volume last month, the performance of three Chevrolet models prevented the circumstance from being worse. The most prominent of these was the Bolt EV, which – thanks to the impressive sales uptick in November – set its new monthly sales record in the South Korean market of 824 units delivered. In addition, two other models helped Chevrolet South Korea sales – the Chevrolet Colorado, which marked the second month of being on sale in the country, as well as the Chevrolet Traverse, which saw its first month of sales with 322 deliveries.

In addition to stabilizing its sales in Korea, GM expects these three models – the Bolt, Colorado and Traverse – to help improve the image of the Chevrolet brand in South Korea as the automaker executes its strategy for domestic product. The first vehicle of that plan is the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which will reach the local market in early 2020.
