The Encore GX accounted for an 8 percent segment share, trailing the segment-leading Honda HR-V by 16,022 units, which accounted for a 14 percent segment share. That said, the Kia Soul could be considered part of the smaller A-segment. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai and Kia sales totals leaves the Korean duo with 60,557 units, or 16,148 units less than GM.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded more than 55 percent to 311,265 units during Q2 2021.
The GM Authority Take
Encore GX sales continued to grow during the second quarter of 2021, with the 26,244 U.S. sales representing the best quarter yet for the all-new subcompact crossover in the U.S., following 2,601 deliveries in Q1 2020, 9,256 deliveries in Q2 2020, 16,019 in Q3 2020, 16,969 in Q4 2020, and 18,435 in Q1 2021.
We expect Buick Encore GX sales to continue growing in the near- and medium-term future as supply and awareness of the model reaches more favorable levels. In particular, supply of the Encore GX should continue to improve as GM allocates more of the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea to produce the Encore GX at the expense of the “regular” Encore, which is also produced at the facility. In fact, the effects of this strategy can be seen as early as Q1 2020, with Encore sales declining substantially as a result of decreased production volume in favor of the Encore GX.

Go Buick!
Thank you Dan for your kind comments and support of Buick!
@Christopher: You are welcome. I’m a long time fan of Buick and watched them go from about 12 or 13 models back in 1988 when I first started selling with them, to the basically 3 sedans a few years back. Then back to about 8 models and now back to about 3 SUV/CUV’s. Between myself and my family, we have owned a good number of new and used Buicks over the years. Never once did any of us have issues. I just wish Buick still had two nice sedans along with the current lineup. Something like, oh, lets say, and all electric Electra?? ; )
Since this is related to the TB…. De Kia is better…😁
Kia makes garbage, I know, I crossed shopped 😁
The 1.6t Kia Seltos is a far, far better vehicle than any gm product with the 1.3t… I know, I cross shopped.
Well in this case the Honda and Hyundai, but the sentiment holds true.
Here he is 👏👏 🥳
Did I just read that correctly? Did h4cksaw just say he cross-dresses? hahaha.
Buick is no longer a damaged brand with Encore GX and Envision both segment toppers outselling Ford, Nissan, Jeep, and in B-Segment Toyota.
Buick/GMC is a most unusual yet successful hyper brand outselling Mazda, Subaru, VW, Mitsubishi.
GM giving focus to this small three auto line up will be a good foundation for EVs. I’d like seeing Buick copy Stellantis Europe by offering an EV version for each of the current core line up plus an A-Segment EV Kia Soul buster.
Lots of words here… Very few of them actually correct… Buick is dead in the united states… They sold less than 200k units in 2020 and are hemorrhaging market share. Mazda outsold them by close to 100k units and are gaining market share. Imagine a flagship vehicle in an American brand that has a 1.3t designed in Shanghai… Well played Mary.
Lets be correct, this is a car site. Buick sells 4 models in the US, Encore, Encore GX, Envision and Enclave. If it wasn’t for China Buick sales we would still have either Oldsmobile or Pontiac, not Buick.
Shopping for my mom To many to pick from so I’m going to pick 3 to test drive which ones I’ll make my choice by the comments
Does it have to be a crossover? If so, I would test drive the 1.6t Kia Seltos S, the Mazda cx-30, and the Buick GX.
Good choices
My wife and I were just shopping the same category. She had a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport. Beautiful car, but I despised it. Transmission was utter garbage. Nissan definitely does NOT do a good job with their CVT’s. There were other issues with the Nissan but I won’t go into it. It was my first and most definitely my last Nissan. We shortened our list to three. The Encore GX Essence, Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-30. We headed out three Saturdays ago with appointments at all three dealers. Buick was first and in full disclosure, I wanted soooo badly to love that SUV because I wanted to support Buick and I believe it’s the best looking of the three. From the moment we pulled off their lot on the test drive, my wife looked over at me and knew immediately just from the expression on my face. That poor little GX was just so underwhelming in every way. Highway road noise was no better than our Rogue. Pretty peppy for a 1.3 but it definitely left you know it was working hard. We took it back totally deflated. Next onto the Mazda dealer. I’m sorry guys, but the CX-30 was on a level the GX can only aspire to reach some day. NVH is non existent in the CX-30. We bought the AWD Premium package on the spot in a beautiful dark charcoal color. The features this car has for the money is mind boggling. They also gave us $19k for our 17 Rogue Sport. The CX-30 was also priced $5k less than the Buick. Again, I set out that morning damn intent on buying the Buick but I couldn’t even pretend that it was going to work for us without feeling like we settled. Never even made it to the Hyundai dealer. Just as well.
Mazda makes the best new vehicle in the world for around 25-30k in my opinion. The only other one that comes close is the top trim Seltos. I was very impressed with the Seltos in my test drive and the warranty is best in class.
@David W. I work at a Mazda store. Been here for nearly 6 years now. Let’s talk in about 2-3 years when your screen is black and you can’t even change your radio station. Let’s talk when the trim around the dash begins to warp and parts no longer fit together. Let’s talk in 3 years when the leather is dried up and warping and pulling apart at the seams. Come back here when one (or more) of the huge plastic pieces on the outside of your CX30 fall off or is hanging off the car because they are put together so cheaply.
I will give you that the CX30 is quiet (at least compared to the massively noisy CX3 it replaced). Your better bet would have been the old style Encore. The funny thing about the Mazda is that you have two types of customers: The very loyal Mazda owners who will stand by the cars no matter. Second is the Mazda owners who buy because they were impressed with the car when new, but then begin to see the many things and replace it with another brand down the road.
@Dan Berning. Dude, why so angry? I’ll agree with you on the fact that I have zero experience with Mazda. Never owned one, but I do know most present owners, love them. They’re rated very well with ALL auto test publications. All of them!! That’s not an accident. They’ve gotta be doing something right. My current perception is based solely on first impressions. That being said, the CX-30 literally embarrassed the GX in every single way. There was not one single thing we liked more about the Buick over the Mazda. I do appreciate your opinion tho. My cars lead a very pampered life inside a climate controlled garage so I’m hoping that helps the 30 age well.
My wife has a 2018 cx-3 with over 60,000 miles… It has given me no reason to believe that it will need more maintenance then any other vehicle once it is out of warranty. It has required no maintenance. The current gm products in this segment are Chinese engineered junk, you made a wise choice.
Living in a state that salts in the winter, I’m most worried about the body rust issues that have plagued many Japanese manufactured vehicles.
David: Why are you asking me why I’m so angry? I don’t get that at all. Isn’t all CAPS the way to make a point or convey anger? Anyhow…
I fully know the Mazda’s rate well. But remember those are magazines and/or writers who spend maybe a day or just a few hours driving them. Look closer at what I said above. Again, I would invite you to see how things are in 2 or 3 or 4 years. I could take an entire page here giving examples of what I’ve seen, encountered and dealt with over the last 5+ years with them. But I won’t take up space for that. Instead, take a look at where Buick has been for years with JDP and even ranking much higher now with CR. Then look at where Mazda is and has been with JDP. Not impressive at all. So yes, anyone should be excited and happy with a brand new car, but time doesn’t seem to be friendly to Mazda
You’re such a party pooper. Let the guy at least enjoy the first 3 years.
Mick1: I don’t congratulate anyone (yes, including family members or friends) who make a choice to buy a Japanese brand vehicle. My family is all in IL, WI or Montana, but if any of them lived near where I work and they wanted me to get them a Mazda, my answer would be no. The only reason why I work at and stay where I am is because I work in the fleet department and we sell to brokers where they sell the cars. I just go over the cars and paperwork on delivery. BTW, I have driven more miles in brand new and 2-4 year old Mazda’s than in my own personal cars. So I do drive them many miles. Absolute worst Mazda to be in? CX3!!! Next worst? CX5. The CX9, Mazda 3 and 6 are all nice cars that I enjoy driving. But I wouldn’t buy one.
H4cksaw: the Buick Encore GX is now their flagship vehicle. That would be the Buick Enclave which is also doing well.
The Buick Enclave is more like a “halo” vehicle for Buick… Which is even more pathetic than calling the GX it’s flagship model. Lowercase gm is heading for a tough run here with their pathetic entries in every segment beside full-sized trucks.
