The GM Authority Take

After experiencing quite a significant increase in April, Chevrolet Argentina sales experienced a decline in May. The results put an end to two months of gains for Chevrolet in the Argentine market.

The decline in May is due to newly-imposed confinement measures enacted in Argentina as a result of the COVID-19 virus. The move resulted in the closure of both dealerships and vehicle registration offices for a week, thereby reducing the number of sales days during May.

The vast majority of the vehicles that offered by the Bow Tie brand in Argentina suffered double-digit declines in May. Among those most impacted was the Chevrolet Onix. The model was already facing issues in the Argentine market due to import restrictions, thereby curtailing how many units the vehicle GM can import from Brazil. In contrast, the locally-made Chevrolet Cruze posted a huge 134 percent increase in sales volume, positioning it as the brand’s best-selling model in Argentina in May.

Other models that also posted triple-digit increases in May were the new Chevrolet Tracker and Montana, which increased saw sales grow by 277 and 220 percent, respectively. It is striking to see the subcompact pickup post such an uptick in sales volume in the same month that the model was discontinued in Argentina. The increase in sales could be a result of discounts meant to clear out old inventory of the vehicle.
