GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles – soon to be known as Stellantis, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for an impressive 31,491 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the four GM offerings – the Buick Encore, Buick Encore GX, Chevy Trax and Chevy Trailblazer – accounted for a cumulative 48,454 deliveries. As such, GM outsold FCA by 16,963 units during the three-month-long period, with a 28 percent segment share to FCA’s 18 percent. Individually, the Encore commanded 10,033 of the aforementioned 48,454 units.

The subcompact mainstream crossover segment contracted nearly 18 percent to 171,102 units during Q2 2020. As such, the Encore’s 59 percent decrease in sales volume was faster than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

We attribute the decline in Buick Encore sales volume during Q2 2020 to two primary factors:

  1. Complications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, something that impacted the entire automotive industry, and
  2. Internal cannibalization from the Buick Encore GX, a newer and more premium crossover that’s also slightly larger than the Encore

We expect Buick Encore sales to rebound in the near-term future as supply returns to more optimal levels. Additionally, we expect Buick to heavily incentivize the Encore so as to make it significantly more affordable than the Encore GX. In fact, we recently saw the very first step to doing just that via a price decrease on a key AWD Encore model.

The Buick Encore GX complements the "regular" Encore in the Buick crossover lineup.
