The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales increased significantly in May, representing the second consecutive month that the Bow Tie brand has posted growth in deliveries in the Brazilian market. As such, Chevrolet continues its volume recovery from the second quarter of 2020, during which time it was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, GM lost a significant part of its market share in May due to low inventory of its best-selling vehicle due to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage.

Although sales of most Chevy models offered in Brazil were in the green in May, including the popular Chevrolet Onix, the Onix did lose the title of Brazil’s best-selling vehicle for the first time in almost six years. The Onix was overtaken in May by the Fiat Argo and the Hyundai HB20 as a direct consequence of of the closure of the Gravataí plant due to a lack of electronic components necessary for producing the vehicle. GM expects to resume Onix production in July, at which point output should return to normal levels.

For its part, the new Chevrolet Tracker continues to post large, triple-digit increases and remains one of the fastest-growing nameplates in Brazil. The results also highlight the growth of the Chevrolet Spin, which not only increased by 363 percent compared to May 2020, but also sold significantly more units than in the recent past.

In addition, the May sales performance enabled the Chevy Bolt EV to post its highest sales performance in the Brazilian market so far this year.
