The GM Authority Take

After posting a 109 percent increase in April and a 73 percent growth in May, Chevrolet Brazil sales suffered a pronounced decline in June. Last month’s decline significantly impacted Chevrolet‘s best-selling position in the South American country, with the Bow Tie brand losing market share and falling to seventh place among the best-selling car brands. The disheartening performance is due to the low inventory levels as a result of the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which is impacting GM more than any other auto manufacturer in Brazil.

In addition to a drastic drop in sales of the Chevrolet Onix, whose production has been idled for four months at the GM Gravataí plant and will not be restarted at least until mid-August, sales of the Chevrolet Tracker also fell severely in June. This represents the first time since the introduction of the fourth-generation Tracker in March 2020 that the small crossover utility vehicle has posted a decrease in sales volumes in Brazil, serving as evidence that the model is also facing inventory issues.

By contrast, the Chevrolet S10 posted a strong recovery in sales volume during June as a result of increased local production at the GM São José dos Campos plant after several months of operating at minimal capacity. This circumstance also contributed to increased June sales of the TrailBlazer SUV, which is built at the same facility and shares the GMT-31XX platform with the S10.

For its part, the Bolt EV continued to increase its sales volume, achieving the highest sales figure so far in 2021 in the Brazilian market.
