GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for 31,491 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the four GM offerings – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, as well as their all-new cousins – the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – accounted for a cumulative 48,454 deliveries. As such, GM outsold FCA by nearly 17,000 units, representing the fourth time that The General sold more units than FCA since the latter launched the second-generation Jeep Compass. GM held a combined 24 percent segment share to FCA’s 15.8 percent. Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 49,229 units of their five offerings in this segment, outpacing GM’s offerings by less than 1,000 units.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 17 percent to 199,137 units during Q2 2020, with the Chevy Trax significantly outpacing that contraction. In fact, the Trax was the only model that was on sale in Q2 2019 that posted an increase in Q2 2020.

The GM Authority Take
The 3 percent growth in Chevy Trax sales during the second quarter of 2020 bucked the trend of the entire segment, allowing the model to significantly outpace the competition from a sales volume standpoint, while also giving GM a substantial leadership position in the space. Moreover, the Trax managed to defy the COVID-19 pandemic and post a healthy volume growth. We suspect that the increase in Trax sales is due to greater supply of the model at the retail level, as the GM Bupeyong plant in South Korea was somewhat shielded from production interruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. By comparison, the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico – which also produces the Trax – saw a greater disruption due to the virus.
For the immediate future, we can expect Chevy Trax sales to decline as the industry as a whole takes a hit due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, once things return to normal, we expect GM to continue dominating this segment in much the same way as we saw here, as the Trax is joined by the all-new Trailblazer in a two-vehicle strategy. The new Chevrolet Trailblazer went on sale in limited quantities at the end of Q1 2020. Sales are ramping up and the vehicle is turning at a very rapid pace and exceeding sales expectations.

Comments
I might be interested in a Trax or Trailblazer in the meet future.
Go for it. The Trax (and Encore) are really good products. I’m sure you wouldn’t be disapointed. The Trailblazer is still too new, but seems very promising.
So why break up the Trax / Encore, while sakes are going great? I have a 2018 Trax and I like it very much.
I own a 2015 Trax with turbo and love mine. My friend laughed and said it would likely be discontinued and I should’ve got a Subaru CUV. Jokes on him… I don’t even see them on the list! Forwarding him this article now. So glad I went with my gut.
I guess this is what happens when people still want a small Chevrolet and they can’t get a Cruze or whatever else.
