Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Starting this quarter, the GMC Acadia now competes in the mainstream large three-row crossover segment since the all-new model is bigger and now the same size as the all-new Chevy Traverse, its corporate sibling. Previously, Big Red’s largest crossover competed in the midsize and full-size mainstream crossover segment, a crowded field of 23 entries. Now, it competes in a space with 14 entries.

The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) remained in the lead again, with sales flat for 46,338 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot, moving up to second place, posting a 17 percent uptick to 36,232 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander, the larger of the two crossovers from Toyota, has moved ahead of its smaller sibling for the first time since the first-ever model entered the marketplace, posting 30,246 deliveries to take third. Meanwhile, the VW Atlas placed fourth with a 30 percent bump to 29,062 units. The Hyundai Palisade took fifth with a 44 percent jump to 28,492 units, while the second entry from the Hyundai Motor Group, the Kia Telluride, placed sixth with flat sales, moving 28,122 units. The Toyota Highlander slipped to seventh from second, with a 52 percent drop to 28,075 units. The Chevy Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), in eighth, posted a 35 percent dip in sales for 23,987 deliveries, while the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) saw sales fall 59 percent, moving 10,008 units to place essentially last.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Acadia, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with it, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating are sold at a price point similar to the Acadia, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models are sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

Sales of mainstream large three-row crossovers were down three percent for 327,156 deliveries in Q2 2024, meaning GMC Acadia sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

As noted above, the GMC Acadia now competes in the mainstream large three-row crossover segment since the all-new model is bigger. It’s now as big as the all-new Traverse, its corporate sibling. Notably, a generational changeover could be affecting sales of the 2024 GMC Acadia, and likely those of the 2024 Chevy Traverse, with both continuing a negative trend during the second quarter of 2024.

GM could use a leg up in this competitive space. Even combining GMC Acadia sales with Chevy Traverse sales this quarter saw The General finish behind Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Ford, and Honda, even though the last two automakers each sell only one model here.

But we suspect GM’s next-generation offerings will gain sales as buyers check out the new designs, overhauled cabins, and improved features, such as the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance system now being offered on the two nameplates for the first time ever.

Specifically for the Acadia, GM also hopes the larger size of the 2024 model will bring back customers, especially female buyers.

About GMC Acadia

This past September, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 GMC Acadia, introducing a wealth of updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model year, including larger dimensions, more tech, and a new turbocharged engine, along with a bunch of new safety features and heated wipers. Critically, the third-generation Acadia will be available in several specific trim levels – base Elevation, off-road-oriented AT4, and range-topping Denali. Additionally, the Elevation trim will exclusively offer a new Black Edition package.

For the first time ever, the next-gen 2024 Acadia will offer GM Super Cruise, the automaker’s semi-autonomous driving assist technology, thanks to being equipped with GM’s new Global B electronic architecture. Critically, Super Cruise will be available on the 2024 Acadia Elevation and AT4 trim levels. The all-new Acadia arrives as the very first GMC vehicle to offer Super Cruise on Elevation and AT4 trims and the first to offer Super Cruise on all trim levels.

The 2024 GMC Acadia is motivated by the turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine as the sole powertrain, rated at 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. Here’s why the 2024 Acadia uses a 2.5L turbo engine instead of a V6.

Engine output is directed through the GM eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is offered as an option on Elevation, Elevation Premium, and Denali. AT4 trims are equipped with a unique Active Torque Control AWD system as standard.

Production of the 2025 GMC Acadia is currently scheduled for October 14th.

    Affordability is now king.

    1. They are way to expensive. When I first saw the outside, I said I want one of these. Then, I seen the interior and I said, GM screwed it up. The steering wheel sucks. There’s no ventilated seats for the rear passenger. The rear taillights are just horrible. I can’t believe that the designer/engineers or whoever came up with such ugly taillights. They are not attractive, they don’t look good for the vehicle and GM just dropped the ball on this vehicle totally. The interior and the back end is just horrible and doesn’t make you want to pay 70k for an ugly vehicle. They need an immediate refresh on this vehicle. Fix the steering wheel, the taillights, lower the price.

  2. If I’m not mistaken the 2024 Acadia had a couple of SOP delays. If inventory was low of Elevation models it stands to reason it could have impacted sales numbers. Curious to know days in field during that time frame.

  3. Could it be the tiny turbo engine with no other option? Just asking for a friend. If so, we all predicted this might happen, but GM’s female exec in charge said her data showed that customers in this segment shouldn’t care. Mmmmm.

    1. Stupid people, really stupid people are now running GM. They have no pulse on what needs to be done to produce outstanding vehicles.

  4. The answer is simple… Customers are rejecting the 4 banger in a full size SUV. I have a 2022 Acadia Denali with the V6. I would not have even looked at this vehicle had it come with just a 4 cylinder and the 2022 model is a smaller unit than the new model.

    1. Absolutely an accurate statement!
The four cylinder engine is horrendous!!
      Period, end of discussion!!!

      1. Have you driven the new Acadia with the 2.5l turbo engine?

        Reply
        1. @FP – Yes, I drove two of them, one right after the other! Needed to drive two of them to see if what I was finding in the first one to be an anomaly of some sort and/or a fluke. It had everything to do with the four cylinder engine. Felt the engine was very sluggish and struggled to move the larger and heavier Acadia. Both engines just didn’t seem to be responsive enough, even though the touted claims of more horsepower and torque.

I found both of those engines to be horrendous and wanted at that point to hold off getting the next generation Acadia, even though I really found the styling of the new model to be very attractive. Maybe a V6 will be reconsidered at some future time!

  5. l was really ready to purchase the new bigger Acadia, but I have held off! When I found out the new heated wiper option was not shipping, a $100 credit offset is given instead, I decided to wait. As soon as the word is out that the new feature is really available, I am ready.

    1. Right. It’s a new model redesign and you can’t even put all the features on the car at launch is really bad. Plus there is noe retrofit to have it added on later which is stupid. Now if I live in the desert then I wouldn’t care but I love where we get alot snow during the winter and it would be nice to have it.

  6. The lack of more than two different interior colors and the very fact that dealers are holding to the “sticker” price and not willing to negotiate might just be the problem. I would love to purchase the 2024 Acadia but those are both factors weighing on my decision!

  7. Sales are down because no one wants to purchase the next generation Acadia with that stupid and pathetic four cylinder engine! Simple as that, a no brainer!

  8. I AM waiting for the bugs and that wiper heater to buy one next year as for the engine it is the same engine as the 2.7 Silverado & Colorado also the one in the Cadillac ct4v. Negative a few pounds.

    1. They need to come out with the high output modification for the 2.5l like they have for the 2.7l.

  9. No one wants the outgoing model and the new model is no where to be found on dealer lots, at least near us. Of course sales are down. My wife owns a Buick Regal tour-x with the turbo 4. It does just fine around town and on long trips

  10. Our 21 model cost around 34k…. 3 years later it’s almost 10 more to get into the same model. Sales are down because GM priced everyone out who was buying them. It’s not only this, it’s on almost everything.

My next new vehicle will be Honda as I can’t get a small car in a manual from GM or Ford. Chrysler doesn’t even make a small car. The small SUV that is supposed to be the small car replacement is more expensive and has less useful space.
