Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Traverse sales saw the Bow Tie’s three-row crossover move up a spot to eighth place from the previous quarter among now 14 entries during Q2 2024 when ranked by sales volume. Starting this quarter in the mainstream large three-row crossover segment, we’ve added the GMC Acadia, the Traverse’s corporate sibling, since the all-new model is bigger and now the same size as the all-new Traverse.

The Ford Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) remained in the lead again, with sales flat for 46,338 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot, moving up to second place, posting a 17 percent uptick to 36,232 units. The Toyota Grand Highlander, the larger of the two crossovers from Toyota, has moved ahead of its smaller sibling for the first time since the first-ever model entered the marketplace, posting 30,246 deliveries to take third. Meanwhile, the VW Atlas placed fourth with a 30 percent bump to 29,062 units. The Hyundai Palisade took fifth with a 44 percent jump to 28,492 units, while the second entry from the Hyundai Motor Group, the Kia Telluride, placed sixth with flat sales, moving 28,122 units. The Toyota Highlander slipped to seventh from second, with a 52 percent drop to 28,075 units. The Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales), in eighth, posted a 35 percent dip in sales for 23,987 deliveries, while the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales) saw sales fall 59 percent, moving 10,008 units.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap in price or seating capacity with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse, which are generally smaller but often cross-shopped with larger models like the Traverse and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating are sold at a price point similar to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models are sold under the same name but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automakers, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Traverse sales performance continued a negative trend during the second quarter of 2024. Sales of both the Traverse and GMC Acadia both may be impacted by a generational changeover for the two all-new models. But we suspect those next-generation offerings will gain sales as buyers check out the new designs, overhauled cabins, and improved features, such as the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance system now being offered on the two nameplates for the first time ever.

GM could use a leg up in this competitive space. Even combining Chevy Traverse sales with GMC Acadia sales this quarter saw The General finish behind Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Ford, and Honda, even though the last two automakers each sell only one model here.

About Chevrolet Traverse

This past summer, GM revealed the next-gen 2024 Chevy Traverse, introducing a design that evokes “a rugged, ready-for-anything presence” along with a fully overhauled cabin with a “best-in-class” 17.7-inch diagonal color infotainment touchscreen. Furthermore, the vaunted GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance feature will be available for the first time ever on the Traverse, thanks to the adoption of GM’s new Global B electronic architecture, plus heated windshield wipers.

Four trim levels are currently available for the all-new 2024 Traverse, including LS, LT, and RS, plus a new off-road-focused Z71 trim for the first time on the large three-row crossover, marking it the first unibody vehicle to wear the Z71 badge. The first-ever, off-road capable Traverse Z71 offers better approach and departure angles, with its new capability demonstrated in videos recently released by GM.

Meanwhile, the Traverse RS features unique taillights, which are clear instead of red.

The High Country trim has been dropped, though it is not entirely off the table. The forthcoming high-end Premier has been spotted in the wild. That was expected and is not surprising since the new 2024 Traverse RS is based on the forthcoming Premier trim.

The next-gen 2024 Traverse offers a single powertrain choice. The all-new turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine develops 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, representing an additional 18 horsepower and 60 pound-feet compared to the outgoing 3.6L V6 LFY engine – an impressive 22.5-percent increase in peak torque. Yet, the maximum trailering rating for the new Traverse stays the same at 5,000 pounds. There’s a good reason why the 2024 Traverse doesn’t use the turbo 2.7L engine.

The 2024 Traverse’s front wheels are driven by an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. All-wheel drive is available as a “regular” system on all trim levels, while the Z71 trim level exclusively sports an “off-road-capable” twin-clutch system.

Production of the 2025 Traverse is currently scheduled for October 14th.

Recently, a GM engineer answered questions about the 2024 Chevy Traverse Z71. Check out the video interview below:

  1. Chevrolet dropped the ball. The Z71 should have memory seats and power folding mirrors, heck, even the automatic folding second and third row seating. The Z71 is an off road capable vehicle that can really use the power folding mirrors. The Z71 and RS should have the same options, but one tailored for off road and the other for sporty on road.

    I had a 21 traverse lease was up Feb 1st 2024
I had to fight to extend my lease till I was able to order one in May I guess gm doesn’t care about loyal custo.ers
And the 24 is good but I got an LT I couldn’t order memory seats why you will keep losing customers

  6. Sales have to be down they sell as fast as they come in. Almost all dealerships lots have maybe 1 or mostly none. Which to means they can’t produce them fast enough or they are having transporting issues. Can’t sell what you don’t have. I also have heard and been told they have had constraints on orders and had a transmission problem with some produced now being held from selling. Lastly, if you order depending on dealer you have to wait for allocation from GM.

  8. First of all sales are recorded and GM is paid once the vehicle is in route to the dealer. Despite the monumental mistake of putting in 4 cylinders in this vehicle I am confident they will sell many Traverses in the future. The Traverse is made at a plant which also makes the GMC Acadia and the Buick Enclave. So even though sales are recorded and paid for once on the carrier I am pretty sure that this location can not build the Traverse fast enough which reflect in the sales numbers. If someday GM offers a 6 cylinder again in a Traverse I will buy my 3rd one, until then never again

Instead we get limited models, black plastic badgeing that somehow makes it a 4WD jeep and a tiny turbo 4 cylinder maintenance nightmare.
Simple is better, listen to people, make it right. Fill the niche that this vechile was desinged to do and let it grow.

  12. We wanted one. Waited 5 monthsfor it without being able to get a price. The day it came in, we went to dealership. $902 AND nearly $5K down for a LEASE. I called it out “that’s not a lease payment is it?”…yes it was, and they would not budge a dime. And then told me every other model is same price. BS. Walked out of there so fast. Bought a Pallisade 2 days later.

It is stronger, much stronger than the car based V6. As noted above, the engine has zero to do with the sales, people like power and this is more powerful and better on gas mileage, it is because they are in the midst of a change over and don’t have the inventory and production. They only recently been hitting the lots. This time next year, it will sell as well or better than the 2nd gen with a V6. It is a better overall vehicle…

  14. I don’t think it’s *just* pertaining to production or vehicle not available, because both GMC Acadia (~58% down) and Chevy Traverse (~35% down) for Q2 2024.

I think many consumers are walking away from the 2 new ones after they changed too many key parts and consumer *wants* (V6, etc), and after those consumers read the accounts / reports of early-bird consumers (to include transmission issues and reliability, longevity, and robust concerns)

      1. TMI, why is the Transmission and key parts already failing, and not much communication with the public to re-assure / regain consumer confidence?

It has also been conveyed by consumers that Turbo can run into premature failure issue, and a hefty cost.

Search “Chevy Traverse Problems* on Facebook. Join the group and within the group’s search circle itself, search [ 2024 ] and see how many are already complaining and sharing their problems with the 2024s.

Honest question, are you affiliated with the car manufacturer or its parent company in any fashion? a vehicle engineering expert or? (genuinely want to know)

I test drove the vehicle. The engine whines and feels like it’s struggling. I do agree, it’s mostly a family car, soccer Mom/Dad, but many will also use it as a daily vehicle (work, commute, etc) and road trips.

I’m sure I speak for most that they / we want a **well-built, and robust** vehicle that will last at least a decade without major costly issues or major failures.

If it’s more powerful, but strained / stressed to gain that additional, is it really true power?

It’s a great looking vehicle, but I think they’re doing it a disservice.

  17. Yes, the 2024 Blazer has 2 engine options. The 2nd option is a 3.6 V6. I’d post the snapshot but this reply format doesn’t allow photos. So again why doesn’t the much larger Traverse still have the 3.6 aspirated V6 option? The Traverse isn’t a soccer mom’s vehicle. It’s much more. The owners I know are hardly soccer moms. The Z71 off road option isn’t for soccer mom’s Chevrolet screwed up, we’re too stubborn to reverse their mistake. A GM support person told me in April of 2024 that the 2025 Traverses would have 3 engine options. The new “piss ant” inline 4 cylinder with a single turbo, a 3.0 V6 with twin turbos and the proven aspirated V6 that I demand or I’ll move to a Jeep Grande Cherokee or a similar 3 row with a V6.

    1. Thank you for clarifying, Gary.
Do you think that GM Support person is reliable in their mentioning of 3 Engine Options for 2025?

Also, can anyone explain the key differences between V6 Twin Turbo, vs, Naturally Aspirated V6? (mostly in layman term). I’m assuming the Twin Turbo is more powerful? However, which is more durable / robust?

  19. The fact the 2025 Blazer has 2 engine options, the 2nd being a 3.6 aspirated V6 supports what I was told in April of 2024 that the 2025 Traverse would have 3 engine options. However, the 2025 Traverse so far has only 1 engine option, being the inline 2.5L 4 cylinder with a single turbocharger. This a deal breaker for some Traverse buyers. After all the Traverse is measurably larger than the Blazer. The federal regulators’ once again have harmed manufacturers that produce different selections of vehicles. Trucks larger than 1-ton need to be separated out so all of the manufacturers can more fairly compete. This is what I’ve gleaned from a previous post that attempted to explain the reason the 2024 Traverse only has the inline 4 cylinder engine with a single turbocharger. Auto manufacturers that don’t build large trucks, like Chevrolet and Ford are at a disadvantage the way the government formula is currently. If this isn’t correct, please explain.

    1. Hello Gary, 2025, 3 engine options or 1? You said two different things for 2025.

“… that the 2025 Traverse would have 3 engine options. However, the 2025 Traverse so far has only 1 engine option, being the inline 2.5L 4 cylinder with a single turbocharger…”

      1. Is this a computer generated response? My explanation was clear.

        1. Basically Gary, is it 1 Engine option, or 3 Engine options for 2025. Your statements are conflicting. How do you know which option(s) the 2025 has so far?

      2. Yes, I was told by a GM human in April of 2024 that the 2025 Traverses would have 3 engine options, but that hasn’t happened.

  20. Correction: Manfacturers that DO build build larger than 1 ton trucks are reportedly at a disadvantage because the federal regulators formula harms them by including the large trucks that other competing manufacturers don’t build. Again, if this isn’t true please comment.
