GMC Sierra Sales Jump 40 Percent During Q2 2021

GMC Sierra sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the second quarter of 2021.

GMC Sierra Sales - Q2 2021 - United States

In the United States, GMC Sierra deliveries totaled 75,495 units in Q2 2021, an increase of about 40 percent compared to 53,824 units sold in Q2 2020. Sierra 1500 (LD) sales fell 0.7 percent to 47,397 units, while Sierra HD sales (2500HD and 3500HD) increased 10.6 percent to 20,415 units.

In the first six months of the year, Sierra sales increased about 30 percent to 138,412 units.

GMC Sierra Sales - Q2 2021 - Canada

In Canada, GMC Sierra deliveries totaled 16,196 units in Q2 2021, an increase of about 26 percent compared to 12,878 units sold in Q2 2020.

In the first six months of the year, Sierra sales increased about 33 percent to 32,866 units.

GMC Sierra Sales - Q2 2021 - Mexico

In Mexico, GMC Sierra deliveries totaled 617 units in Q2 2021, an increase of about 12 percent compared to 553 units sold in Q2 2020.

In the first six months of the year, Sierra sales decreased about 1 percent to 1,210 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The 40 percent increase in GMC Sierra sales kept the full-size pickup truck line in fourth place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during Q2 2021. Big Red’s truck trailed its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado – in first place – by a margin of 89,236 units (see running Chevy Silverado sales), the Ram Pickup in second, and the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) in third place. The Sierra easily outsold the remaining segment contenders – the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

The 40 percent jump in Sierra sales volume allowed it to outperform the segment average growth rate as well as the year-over-year deltas of all other contenders, except those of the Nissan Titan, which managed to post a 60 percent increase, and the Ram Pickup which also saw a 40 percent sales volume increase. The Ford F-Series posted the largest segment decline of 13 percent, while the Toyota Tundra reported a 9 percent decrease.

The Sierra saw its segment share increase to 13 percent compared to 11 percent during Q2 2020. The only models in the segment that did not post an increase in segment share during the quarter were the F-Series and Tundra.

The full-size pickup truck segment expanded nearly 18 percent to 597,737 units in Q2 2021, meaning that Sierra sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

We are providing Honda Ridgeline sales below for informational purposes, since the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments.

It’s also worth noting that the two full-size GM trucks – the Sierra and Silverado – recorded 240,226 combined deliveries during the quarter. That makes GM the best-selling purveyor of full-size pickup trucks, outselling the Ram Pickup by nearly 76,000 units and the F-Series by roughly 82,000 units.

The GM Authority Take

The healthy increase in GMC Sierra sales during the second quarter of 2021 injects even more momentum into the nameplate, since the results follow a 19 percent rise in Q1 2021, a 14 percent increase in Q4 2020, a 2 percent rebound in Q3 2020, a 5 percent decrease in Q2 2020, and an impressive 31 percent increase during Q1 2020.

During Q2 2021, deliveries of both the Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD were both up 38 percent and nearly 46 percent, respectively.

We expect GMC Sierra sales to continue to climb during 2021, though the ongoing microchip shortage might tamper with this expectation. Contributing to the growth forecast are GM’s plans to start producing full-size pickup trucks, including the Sierra, at its GM Oshawa plant, adding a fourth third production facility for the full-size truck line.

We should also highlight the fact that interest in and sales of the GMC Sierra will likely improve even further after the 2022 model year refresh for light-duty models, due to launch later this year. See more details on the 2022 GMC Sierra.

  2. what sets gm trucks apart from the rest is your getting a vehicle with more standerdized parts -which in the long run – lower parts replacement and cost – ford goes to the end of the earth to make parts unique ! this includes terminal end connectors – bolt hole patterns – and a myriad of other parts ! just compare the difference between a 2016 and 2017 !

  3. GMC always had and always will be a very nice luxury truck… Ford lost sales because people want V8 Trucks not everyone wants a turbo V6. Besides already these turbo trucks are starting to break down after four or five years… Even the old ford’s lasted at least ten years without a hickup. Also it helps that GM offers two V8 engines as well as a V6 and Turbo four cylinder… As far as the Super Duty Ford ruined them years ago they used to be a nice heavy duty truck with the international triple 4 diesel engine ever since they messed with that engine the SD had struggled to sell . Bottom line if I want/need a truck I am buying Chevy or GMC

    1. They are building limited edition 2122, I have on order a 2222 or a 2322. Fortunately they don’t have to worry Mary and I can’t live that long. Ram or Ford will get the sale by default, goodbye GM

    2. Well the ford offers a v8 in the 5.0 coyote so if someone really wanted a ford with a v8 they could get it.

This is good news, considering that even with a sales increase for the Sierra in recent years, the truck would always be in 5th or 6th place within this segment, to see the possibility of this truck tying up with the sales of RAM or Ford would be impressive, though we know that could be decades down the road, it’s certainly not impossible at this point.

  5. Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble-but whomever has “chips” right now are going to sell vehicles. The only reason Ford is down is that they have been hit hard by the “chip thing”. Their V6 turbos are a proven motor-and they sell TONS OF THEM under normal market conditions.

    The Titan is an inferior truck (premium fuel recommended/smallish interior) and their sales are up 60%-and Nissan hasn’t been hit hard by the “chip” thing. That should tell you that people who want trucks are quite frankly buying what’s available.

    The numbers would be quite different under “normal market” conditions.

Fords V6 Turbo is JUNK… I Know somebody that just spent between two to three thousand to replace the turbos and the truck maybe 5 or 6 years old… Not a very proven engine when old Ford V8’s are still running well over ten years. And it’s not just Ford I won’t even look at a Silverado with a Turbo 4 cylinder… I want a real truck.

  6. GM has proven you don’t need a gaudy dash with a big infotainment screen to sell trucks. Besides big screens blind you on dark streets and rural roads at night. I’ve been GM all my life. The first GM car I can remember was my dad’s 1937 Pontiac. All of my cars have been V8’s, starting with my 1956 two door Hardtop. GM has the most popular V8’s ever produced. I love them!

    1. Dick Franks… Finally somebody gets it… I owned four Chevys, one Pontiac, my wife currently has a 2019 Buick Enclave and I own a 2010 Chevy Equinox LTZ V6 we both love our cars. I have never had major problems with GM vehicles just maintenance and the occasional service bulletin but that’s it. And yes GM V8’s are the most popular.
