Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The 14 percent increase in GMC Sierra sales kept the full-size pickup truck line in fourth place during Q4 2020. Big Red’s truck trailed the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) in first place (by a wide margin of about 120,000 units), its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado – in second place (see running Chevy Silverado sales), and the Ram Pickup in third. The Sierra outsold the remaining segment contenders on a combined basis, including the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

The Sierra’s 14 percent increase in sales volume allowed it to outperform the segment as well as all other contenders, except the Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra which reported increases of 15 and 26 percent, respectively. The Chevrolet Silverado also posted a healthy 10 percent increase. The Ram and F-Series saw sales volume decrease, with the Ram Pickup seeing a 7 percent decline and the Ford F-Series posting a 15 percent loss.

The GMC Sierra saw its segment share increase to 12 percent compared to 10 percent recorded in Q4 2019.

The full-size pickup truck segment contracted 2 percent to 656,894 units in Q4 2020, meaning that Sierra sales significantly outperformed the segment.

The GM Authority Take

The 14 percent increase in GMC Sierra sales during the fourth quarter of 2020 is welcome news after the 2 percent rebound in Q3 2020 and 5 percent decrease in Q2 2020. The Sierra also posted an impressive 31 percent increase in sales during Q1 2020.

The Sierra HD was responsible for the uptick in overall Sierra sales, as the Sierra 1500 posted a slight decline in sales volume.

We expect GMC Sierra sales to continue to climb in 2021, thanks to improved inventory and healthy market demand.

It’s also worth noting that the two full-size GM trucks – the Sierra and Silverado – recorded 257,815 combined deliveries during the quarter. That makes The General the best-selling purveyor of full-size pickup trucks, beating Ford by 59,427 units.

It’s also worth highlighting that GMC Sierra sales are likely to improve after the 2022 model year refresh, due to launch later this year. See more details on the 2022 GMC Sierra.
