Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

The two percent increase in GMC Sierra sales allowed the full-size pickup truck line to post its best-ever third quarter sales performance during Q3 2020. Big Red’s truck remained in fourth place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, trailing the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) in first place (by a wide margin of about 154,000 units), the Ram Pickup (see Ram Pickup sales) in second, and its own corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado – in third place (see Chevy Silverado sales). The Sierra outsold the remaining segment contenders on a combined basis, including the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

The Sierra’s 2 percent increase in sales volume allowed it to outperform the segment as well as all other contenders, except the F-Series which reported a 4 percent increase. The segment as a whole and all contenders except for Sierra and F-Series saw sales volume decrease. The Nissan Titan posted a 2 percent loss, Ram Pickup reported a 3 percent decline, and the Chevrolet Silverado posted a 5 percent loss. The Toyota Tundra reported the largest year-over-year decrease of 12 percent.

The GMC pickup saw its segment share slightly increase during the quarter to 11 percent compared to 10 percent recorded in Q3 2019. The number pales in comparison to the 35 percent commanded by the F-Series, 25 percent for the Ram Pickup, and 23 percent by the Silverado. The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan held 4 and 1 percent, respectively.

The full-size pickup truck segment contracted 1.3 percent to 627,996 units in Q3 2020.

The GM Authority Take

The slight increase in GMC Sierra sales during the third quarter of 2020 is welcome news after the 5 percent decrease in Q2 2020. The Sierra line posted an impressive 31 percent increase in sales during Q1 2020.

The Sierra HD was responsible for the uptick in overall Sierra sales, as Sierra 1500 (LD / Light Duty) sales were off nearly a percent. However, we believe that GMC Sierra sales would have grown even more had it not been for the impedance caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which placed GM at a sub-optimal position from a supply standpoint.

We expect GMC Sierra sales to hit their stride from a sales volume standpoint during Q4 on improved inventory and healthy market demand.

It’s also worth noting that the two full-size GM trucks – the Sierra and Silverado – recorded 215,296 combined deliveries during the quarter. That makes The General the second best-selling purveyor of full-size pickup trucks, second to Ford by 6,351 units.

  1. Get out! Hmm. I leaned toward the Sierra beginning on Thursday, August 27, 1987. GM’s C/K trucks had caught my eye that spring as my father bought a 2WD Sierra SLE as his business truck in May of ’87. Seven Sierras later, by my rough, offhand count, I became a Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon Denali XL admirer. Were I still interested in trucks the new Sierra would be the way I’d go.

  2. Crappy interior still needs to be replaced, then I’ll consider one.

    1. Hey good job posting the same comment everyone has already seen. Highly doubt you are in the market for a truck.

  4. 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 is by far the best truck on the road today. Best performance, best exterior look and a close second to the Top level RAM for interior. But they cost more than the F150 but like they say you get what you pay for.

  5. The funny thing is GM is 261 units ahead of Ford when you add Chevy and GMC together!

    1. The interior critics crack me up. Were talking about a truck not a Tahoe or Escalade. Well, if you use it just for groceries I would complain. But if you buy a truck for camping, work, toting your kids to baseball or football, hunting, and fishing, why complain about the interior when each of those are dirty hobbies which muck up the interior … why complain for Escalade interior to jack up the cost. IMO, I would like for that cost to go towards a better – beefier suspension and more preventative rust proof undercarriage on all models not just certain models. Now if you say it’s not durable, that’s different…
