GM To End 2024 Chevy Camaro Production Earlier Than Expected: Exclusive

General Motors has again changed its plans regarding the end date for 2024 Chevy Camaro production, shaving some weeks off its previously-announced production schedule for the muscle car, GM Authority has exclusively learned.

According to insider sources familiar with the matter, the 2024 Chevy Camaro Convertible will end production on November 22nd, 2023, while the last 2024 Camaro Coupe will roll off the assembly line on December 7th, 2023.

In other words, production of the Convertible body style will end before that of the Coupe.

These November and December dates are notably earlier than the January 2024 timeframe The General provided as the discontinuation timeframe when it announced the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector’s Edition. But even before that, GM Authority exclusively reported that the 2024 Chevy Camaro would get a condensed production run with less total units built than normal production years. In addition to that, GM also ceased offering fleet and government orders, along with discounts for GM employees for the model.

Though these consistent scheduling changes appear to indicate a continuing determination to wrap up production of the sixth-generation sports car as quickly as possible, it’s not clear why the Camaro’s discontinuation date continues to move up.

Side view of the 2024 Chevy Camaro.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Camaro will be unusual in several other regards as well. As GM Authority previously reported, the Bow Tie will produce 60 percent more 2024 Camaro units motivated by the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT1 engine, providing fans with greater opportunity to acquire a vehicle powered by an atmospheric V8.

Back when 2024 Camaro production was set to stop in January 2024, our sources indicated that GM will produce 2,000 units of the 2024 Chevy Camaro in the Collector’s Edition configuration across the LT/RS, LT1 and 1SS/2SS trim levels. In addition to this total, 350 units of Camaro ZL1 units will be built as Collector’s Edition machines. Now that production will end earlier than January, it’s likely that these numbers will be negatively impacted.

As a reminder, engine choices for the 2024 Camaro include the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, the aforementioned naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT1 gasoline engine, and the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine. Under the body panels the sixth-gen Camaro rides on the GM Alpha platform.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Camaro is currently under way after starting on August 7th, 2023 at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan. However, the ongoing GM-UAW negotiations might impact that in the days or weeks ahead.

Once production of the sixth-gen Camaro comes to an end, the Camaro nameplate will be put on hiatus, at least until the model gets revived as an EV, something GM has previously confirmed, albeit in a cryptic fashion.

  1. Too bad Chevrolet could not keep up with Mustang production. End of an era. I had two in my lifetime, a 68 convertible and a 70. Great cars back in the day. Unfortunately styling got very stale.

    1. Absolutely. This is the kext dumb decision GM is making. I know right now everyone want trucks, but each generation has their rebels who want to stand out. Right now its off road everything. Every corner you see someone with a Raptor or a land cruiser and they just drive it to McDonald’s and back, never see a day of dirt. Already most of us laugh at it. The next generation is seeing this growing up and will most likely go back to street vehicles. Muscle cars, lowered trucks, sport sedans. GM needs to be developing a new generation camaro, SS and GMC cyclone, or they will end up being behind the 8 ball again.

Nothing like the sound of a lumpy gas engine idle…hopefully they will put recordings of it in the Smithsonian for future generations to enjoy.

      1. Commercials do little to persuade buyers. Right now GM is vying for the millions of buyers who just show up on a toyota/honda lot and buy the first car that they come across and dont even look under the hood. That’s really Toyotas bread and butter costumer.

Theres not a snowballs chance in hell a mustang/F150 driver will come buy a chevy from a commercial. Auto rivalries run as deep as some sports team rivalries.

  13. Has GM really done anything since the 2020 MY to make you think that they weren’t eager to be done with Camaro? Somebody in the RenCen determined the Camaro was more trouble than it was worth some time ago I’m sure, and from a business perspective, there was probably no resistance at all to pull the plug ahead of schedule. Who knows…the strike may have played a part in this decision, too.

They reacted surprisingly fast to address the negative response to the 2019 MCE front bowtie location, and the LT1 trim was a good idea in 2020, but it seems like they were shuffling deck chairs on a sinking ship ever since (as GM often does post-MCE). We can hope that resources have been funnelled towards a successor that’s worthy of the name, regardless of powertrain.

  24. Camaro; My 1st true performance car, a Gen 1 ‘68 SS BB 4M. After work 13:57@105mph 1/4 mile with street tires and a 3:08 rear axle. Top Speed approx. 160mph. May not sound like much but it was a fast street car in its day.

How far the Camaro has come. Stock Gen 6 2SS Camaro: 0-60 3.9 sec/ 12.2@ Top Speed 165mph (R&T ‘19). With approx. 27mpg highway. Amazing!

The new Camaro has truly proven itself on both the street and track.

At Nurburgring/ Nordschleife an ‘18 ZL1/1LE ran a 7.16 proving the new production Camaro is a performance track car and keeps pace with Corvettes and a long list of exotics.

We saw a ‘23 Camaro ZL1 (NASCAR) at Lemans this year (Garage 56 Project). Although not without technical issues it proved its mettle.

I know if no other American produced car with these accomplishments with the exception of Corvette.

And GM temporarily retires the name. Yet again. Financial gain, incentives, bonuses, company image among other things is likely why.

So a 100% EV is to carry the Camaro badge in the near future? OK prove to me it’s worthy of the name GM.

That said I don’t expect to see many EV Camaros on the track. I imagine a pit row with piles of spent batteries, teams of pit crew R&Ring batteries in and out of cars in seconds. Right.

Gen 6 Camaro ZL1 proved itself at the Nurburgring/ Nordschlief with a 7.16 run.

Outperforms mii I st if it’s American competitors on the track

Sad to see GM cancel the car. Again.

I’m a bit confused how they can stop production before 2024, I work for a non American oem and was taught that to put out a new model year you have to build that car at least for some small portion of time in that calendar year. So if you are building a 2024 some cars have to be built in 2024, legally. Not sure if that’s a euro thing or not but find it odd for 24MY to finish production before 2024…

  32. Come on guys, GM themselves flopped on the overall design of the 6th gen Camaro. They looked at the successful 5th gen and instead of pushing the design envelope they simply updated the styling and kept its already known disadvantages. Yes it’s platform and driving dynamics were superb, but it looked all too familiar with tight interior and limited outward visibility. Sales began to suffer and it never reached 5th gen levels of popularity with its higher prices. People were just not willing to pay the costs of owning what is a essentially a GT sports coupe masquerading as a muscle car. Now here we are. GM made a severe miscalculation.

When I first saw this article, that was the end of my quest for a 2024. I checked Chevy inventory within 500 miles of me and found a 2023 in a color I liked with most of what I wanted on it and no deal breakers. I’m in the process of purchasing it and they are transporting it to me.

I’d suggest to anyone not to rely on your 2024 getting built, especially if you’re waiting on your dealer to get an allotment which is no guarantee anyway. There are still 2023s on lots and you can bet that those will start going fast. The sooner you act, the better the chance of getting something you’d like.

    2. I get it, Jeannette, but you had to know that getting one was going to be sheer luck. GM wasn’t even taking orders back in May and only started in August. Just because your dealer got an allotment didn’t mean that you were going to get your car and just because GM accepted your order didn’t mean you were going to get it either. Considering the strike and rolling back end of production were both working against you. I hate the way GM has handled this too, but you still have options. I put in an order in Aug and my dealer got an allotment and offered it to me in late Sept. Considering all of the above, I had already begun the purchase of a guaranteed ’23. Taking up the offer would have been chancy at best, so I passed on it. If you really want a new Camaro, don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. You aren’t hurting GM, but you are hurting yourself. Think about it. It would’ve been nice to have a ’24, but I’m loving my ’23 and not looking back.
