Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Terrain sales performance during the second quarter of 2021 keeps the compact crossover in 14th place out of 17 competitors in the mainstream compact crossover segment in the United States.

As such, the Terrain was outsold by the Honda CR-V in first, followed by the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate – the Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, Ford Escape, Volkswagen Tiguan, the all-new Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Sportage, Jeep Cherokee, and the Subaru Crosstrek. The Terrain followed, outselling the Mitsubishi Outlander, Dodge Journey, and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The performance gives the Terrain a 2 percent segment share during the quarter, down 1 percent from the 3 percent share it held a year ago in Q2 2020.

The compact mainstream crossover segment (C-crossover segment) expanded 49 percent to 768,514 units during Q2 2021, meaning that GMC Terrain sales grew slower than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Terrain sales increased by 19 percent to 16,616 units during the second quarter of 2021 compared to the second quarter of 2020. This is welcome news after the 33 percent decrease in sales reported in Q1 2021. That said, it’s worth pointing out that every model in the segment experienced a growth in sales volume.

The models to post the largest increases in the segment this quarter were the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with 140 and 139 percent growth, respectively. The (all-new) Nissan Rogue was close behind with a 102 percent rise in sales, and the segment leading Honda CR-V posted a 76 percent increase.

The Terrain saw fewer gains since supply was hindered by repercussions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting GM as well as most of the auto industry at large, just as it did throughout the 2020 calendar year. We posit that the Terrain’s lackluster sales performance during the second quarter was primarily the result of two factors impacting supply:

Sales Numbers - GM Mainstream Compact Crossovers - Q2 2021 - United States

MODEL Q2 21 / Q2 20 Q2 21 Q2 20 Q2 21 SHARE Q2 20 SHARE YTD 21 / YTD 20 YTD 21 YTD 20
CHEVROLET EQUINOX +9.15% 55,448 50,798 77% 78% -4.49% 118,666 124,251
GMC TERRAIN +19.21% 16,616 13,939 23% 22% -14.52% 33,533 39,231
TOTAL +11.32% 72,064 64,737 -6.90% 152,199 163,482

We should also note that combined sales of the two GM compact crossovers – the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox – totaled 72,064 units for a 9 percent segment share. The numbers are impressive, but didn’t enable the duo to be anywhere close to the segment-leading Honda CR-V, which saw sales increase 76 percent to 119,433 units during the quarter for a 16 percent segment share. The Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue also posted higher sales volumes than the Terrain and Equinox combined.

The GMC Terrain AT4 is a new trim level that will launch with the refreshed Terrain lineup. The refreshed Terrain was originally slated to launch for the 2021 model year, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s also worth pointing out that GM originally slated to give the GMC Terrain get a midcycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the launch of the updated model to be pushed back to the 2022 model year as the 2022 GMC Terrain.

The refresh includes revamped front and rear fascias, the addition of a rugged Terrain AT4 model, plus various other enhancements and new features. As a result of the delay, the 2021 model year gets only a few minor changes. See 2021 GMC Terrain changes and updates.

We expect Terrain sales to continue lagging the segment average growth rate until GM is able to improve supply.

  1. Pulling the 2.0L engine from the Terrain Denali will certainly turn things around for this vehicle. As the owner of a 2019 Denali with the 2.0L Turbo, it is baffling as to why GM would decide to only offer the anemic and embarrassing 1.5L going forward, but still expect people to pay premium prices for the Denali. Some times you just have to shake your head in disgust as to some of the decisions this company makes. Professional grade?

  2. I hear ya wanted to purchase the new refreshed 2022 Terrain Denali but having only one engine option not sure if still going to purchase maybe hoping there might be a slight change and might offer a 2.0 l engine but highly unlikely wishful thinking I guess !!!

    1. Our 2018 GMC Terrain SLE with the 2.0L turbo was coming off of lease. I intended to get into another Terrain to replace it. We loved the Terrain and I loved the power from the 2.0 L . When I learned that the 2.0L would no longer be offered in the Terrain – I didn’t even go back to my GMC dealership when it came time to turn the Terrain in. BONE-HEADED decision to drop the 2.0 L from the line up GMC!!! Who makes these decisions.

  3. Without the 2.0T and v6, gm should just sunset the Terrain and Equinox IMO and let it die before they give it a slow death as they are, just to keep some revenue coming in until they go all EV. These vehicles will go down as once was…to now trash and gm themselves are responsible.

  7. The 2.0 is exactly why i chose an envision over the terrain. I had full intentions of purchasing a terrain.

  8. At least put the 2.0L engine in from the Envision!
Also (re) add the towing package w/ the 2.0L engine. The new 2.0L engine is great! Enough power & torque to tow up to 2500 lbs + regular fuel!! The old 2.0L made a bit more power, but took premium fuel. I like the Terrain, would love to have one, but am hesitant due to having only the 1.5L engine.

    1. Great point on the regular fuel in the 2.0. I actually didn’t know about that until after I purchased the envision. That was a pleasant surprise to say the least! I had to research and call the dealership to verify because I couldn’t believe that it only took regular.

  9. Totally agree with Richards comment at least give us the 2.0 l Engine from the Buick Envision with a little more power and torque and 2500 towing capacity I would be all in a heartbeat! Just don’t think that 1.5 engine is enough

  10. I own a 2015 Terrain I have a 3.6 litre V6 why would they make the engine smaller, and turbo.

  11. The terrain would be awesome with a3.6 Engine pretty reliable and good on fuel really didn’t hear much issues with that 3.6 engine but the terrain got smaller so did the engine and getting smaller the 2.0 l was so perfect engine enough power and plenty of torque for that 3500 lbs vehicle but don’t forget the 9 spd transmission works well . And hope gm sticks to that 9 spd and does not use that crappy C V T transmission!!
