As we’ve covered previously, every model in the GMC lineup will offer an AT4 trim level variant in the next few years, with the only exception being the GMC Savana van. Now, we’re getting a look at the new 2021 GMC Terrain AT4 crossover, as presented on the floor of the 2020 Chicago Auto Show in the following GM Authority Live Photo Gallery.
For those who may be unaware, GMC’s AT4 line adds a number of off-road-themed changes and upgrades. For now, full details on the new GMC Terrain AT4 are still forthcoming, with General Motors merely stating that it will sport a “rugged exterior, confident capability and advanced technology.” Nevertheless, there are still a few things to pick apart based on the following photos.
Up front, we see the GMC Terrain AT4 sports a large grille section with bold horizontal dividing lines, as well as a big red GMC logo and smaller AT4 badge in the corner. The headlamps use a C-shaped design, and bookend the grille nicely.
The profile view reveals black lower cladding sections, which run from the nose, around the fenders, and into the rear. Further AT4 badging is added to the front doors, and both the sideview mirrors and wheels are black as well.
The rear of the GMC Terrain AT4 shows off with further C-shaped designs for the tail lamps, while the liftgate handle gets a thick bit of trim with the same finish as the front fascia grille. Underneath the black lower bumper section, we find a pair of integrated exhaust tips, with a trapezoidal shape and polished finish. A prominent AT4 badge finishes it off.
The 2021 GMC Terrain AT4 is expected to launch in the fall, so look for more official info to drop between then and now. We’ll also have more information on the off-road-themed crossover posted soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, make sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Terrain news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Anything change or got an update in the interior?
Wow, that side profile does absolutely NOTHING for this vehicle. Certainly doesn’t scream “all-terrain”. Instead it simply looks like a very lower trim level, like the cheapest you can get. Is the black cladding that much different on this model than the non AT4 models? It must be a combination of the thicker black cladding and the smaller diameter black wheels giving me this feeling. Because this isn’t how I’ve felt about the new Terrain before. As an owner of a 2015 model, I’ve previously liked the new Terrain. This side profile though, is very disappointing. Aside from the new front grille, there is nothing rugged about this vehicle.
I totally agree!! I have a classic according to this disappointment of the 2021 GMC terrain as they call it. No class at all. My 2016 GMC Terrain SLT V6 has only 65,000 and I would never even consider getting rid of my classic beauty that’s Navy and navy blue leather seats…thanks for your infor
Maybe it’s just me but this new Terrain is homely. It reminds me of the Aztek days of yore. Sorry, GMC but you could have done a better job. IMHO.
It doesn’t really look like there has been too many updates. The worst purchase I made was buying a 2018 Terrain. I traded it in within a year. It was in the shop over 25 times from 2018-2019. You’ve done nothing to make me interested in purchasing another Terrain.
With respect, I own a 2018 SLT Terrain and my wife and I love it; granted, we have the 2.0 liter, which may perhaps be an important factor.
White with black trim is too much of a contrast. If the trim was a dark gray metallic it would blend better with the white.
2017 was the last time GM made a good looking Terrain.
Seems like GMC wants to “build excitement” like Pontiac with cladding and cosmetic tweeks.
GMC should be a Jeep fighter. It isn’t. A Wrangler fighter should be on deck instead of this crap.
With China crippled GM may within a few years being just a bit regional player focused on the Americas. Due to the Cruise partnership I have this nightmare of a stock swap GM-Honda “merger” within three to five years.
With crap like the AT4 line up me thinks FCA-PSA will end up being the Detroit leader before long. Great work Mary!
Terrain carries a tradition of ugly styling and poor quality. The new generation just cranks all of that up a few notches from the original.
So basically you are going to pay more for black cladding , wheels and new head and taillights , and AT4 badges that don’t mean a thing . If like the Acadia AT4 the interior will be minus content that you can buy in a SLT-1 which costs less .
A new trim level design not worth the price . Pull up to a Grand Cherokee in your AT4 and you can hear the laughter .
This is so like those goofy #’s on the deck lids of Cadillac . Come on GM , what is up with all the fake emblems .
Live to dream.. could a 2022 Chevrolet Blazer AT4 arrive soon and capable of matching the off-road capability of the Ford Bronco.
The comments from people bashing the terrain probably never actually drove one. The AT4 is way better then any Cherokee toy someone could buy.
