Competitive Sales Comparison
GMC Terrain sales performance during the second quarter of 2020 puts the compact crossover in 13th place out of 16 competitors in the mainstream compact crossover segment in the United States.
As such, the Terrain was outsold by the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and platform mate – the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Crosstrek, Jeep Cherokee, and the Kia Sportage. The Terrain outsold three models – the Dodge Journey, Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
The performance gives the Terrain a 3 percent segment share during the quarter, matching the share it held a year ago in Q2 2019.

The GM Authority Take
Compared to the second quarter of 2019, GMC Terrain sales decreased a significant amount during the second quarter of 2020, underperforming the segment as a whole. In fact, the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester were the only two models in the segment to report an increase in sales this quarter. Meanwhile, the Terrain’s corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevrolet Equinox (see Chevrolet Equinox sales), saw sales fall 41 percent during the quarter. Additionally, Ford Escape sales decreased 49 percent, Jeep Cherokee sales fell 51 percent, Dodge Journey sales were off 75 percent, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross sales tanked 68 percent.
Sales of the Terrain (as well as the Equinox) were hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted GM as well as the entire automotive industry at large. We posit that the drop was the result of the following two macro factors:
- Sub-optimal supply: COVID depleted the supply of the Terrain at dealers.
- Lower demand: stay-at-home orders from the COVID-19 pandemic, along with negative impacts to the economy, resulted in lower demand during the second quarter.
These two events combined to create a “perfect storm” scenario for reduced deliveries during the quarter.
We should also note that sales of the two GM compact crossovers – the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox – totaled 64,737 units for a 13 percent segment share. The numbers are impressive, but didn’t enable the duo to outsell the Toyota RAV4, which saw sales fall nearly 27 percent to 85,729 units during the quarter, for a 17 percent segment share.

The GMC Terrain AT4 is a new trim level that will launch with the refreshed Terrain lineup. The refreshed Terrain was originally slated to launch for the 2021 model year, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Terrain was originally slated to get a midcycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year, but COVID-19 caused it to be pushed back to the 2022 model year. The refresh includes revamped front and rear fascias, the addition of a rugged Terrain AT4 model, plus various other minor enhancements and new features. As a result of the delay, the 2021 model year gets only a few minor changes. See 2021 GMC Terrain changes and updates.

Good.
Let the Terrible Terrain fail.
What’s wrong with it? I have one and everyone who has driven it likes it. Works great, i can tow my wave runner and ATV. Gets about 30 mpg on highway and is quiet and has been very reliable.
The looks i happen to like better than the equinox. I do think the update equinox however is going to do very well it looks much better.
Mitsubishi just sucks. Always at the bottom of lists.
The Terrain is also ugly and bloated
The older Terrain’s looked good but they have gotten progressively fugly with every make over. They really need to restyle it, get back to a GMC look. This thing does look bloated and way to mini van like.
The US Air Force recently flew what might be their Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter jet which would essentially replace the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor; but what the Air Force directed was for the contractor to not try developing new technology.. instead, the US Air Force asked the contractor to use existing off-the-shelf components then design and build a new stealthy aircraft as the entire aircraft was designed using CAD/CAM and Rapid Prototyping as the new GEN 6 fighter will do everything like the F-22 except it will be cheaper and fully operational with no need for further development as all systems needed are baked into the GEN 6 design. Following this would be a GMC Terrain that would undergo a redesign while keeping as many current GMC Terrain components as possible.
I agree that the older ones looked better. When GMC looked more like a truck, sits up higher, for a GMC it is better
I have said this before and I will just keep right on going with it, GM needs GMC to be the smooth truck line !
Denali’s and now AT4’s but RWD/AWD body on frame units ! Not the grocery getter for the city folk, the grocery getter for the country folk !
GM and its looking different yet the same underpowered boring midsized SUVs are getting old !
We had two last generation Terrains and loved them. It had that muscular look. The new one is a far cry to what it should look like. When it was time, we ended up getting an Envision and are very happy with it. At least it has rear air vents.
I couldn’t be happier to see the sales drop. Once you buy a Terrain, you have entered into a money pit. To maintain a vehicle is a costly as financing it. Good riddance GMC, you drop your customers like a Led Zeppelin after purchase…Yes, I’m so much more satisfied in My Honda.
Thank you Tokyo Rose. Your check is in the mail. Make sure to sign up for advanced troll 201!
Too much problem with gmc auto service and engine consummation of oil.I will go back to these people waste of money and time. They have lots of excuses to by pass the recall service.
Please keep the Equinox alive and close the shop and down the drain the unwanted GMC Terrain always sold overpriced !
If GMC produces a vehicle on the new Trailblazer platform with a 2.0t and priced it starting somewhere between 35k-40k I believe it would sell pretty well. Realistically it should start closer to a 35k price tag because competitors like the GLA, Q3, X1, and XC40 all start right there. The XT4 isn’t even close to competitive to any of these smaller, sportier crossovers. As of right now GM doesn’t offer a single vehicle in that space, like not even close.
h4cksaw,
I agree, and the trail blazer is the largest vehicle the 2.0T should be used in. Using the 2.0T in the Cadillac XT4 was almost as bad as using it in the CT6 !
Yet if GM is going to enter this space with a GMC, it simply needs to look and act more truck like, rugged yet refined !
This loosing ” GM model ” of underpowering EVERYTHING they sell, is costing them HUGE, today !!!
I am completely fine with a Chevy, base, underpowered , cheap, vehicle. However GM has taken and pushed that through EVERYTHING !!!!
I would own an XT4 today, if it was AWD/RWD with a 2.7T and a Lyriq interior !
The EV craze will NOT cone quick enough for GM to fill the gap, and the starvation happening on the ICE side is costing them dearly !!
I have an older Terrain and a new Equinox both built in (Canada) and they are dependable and great looking vehicles. The new Terrain has many flaws in design and powertrain but the biggest flaw by far is where it’s assembled. Till General Motors starts building more vehicles in United States or Canada I will cross off any vehicle built in Mexico. Start rewarding the countries that assisted General Motors with the bailout and reward the countries that actually buy your vehicles.
I am still driving my 2010 Terrain SLE 6cyl. I have had a few mechanical issues over the years. I am presently looking at a new one. Forget it!!!
Whom ever re-designed it’s appearance made the first blunder. It went from a more muscle look to a whimpy look.
The interior has suffered too, in looks and quality. The removal of stick shift did it for me. I like so many of my friends say the same. The push button takes away a lot from the vehicle. The real shame is with the change to what a appears a single engine choice and drive choice. While I am looking at the GMC Canyon – I do not like to hear about how bad GM customer service has gotten. It’s going to be tough for GM to convince me in the next few months from purchasing a Ford Ranger.
