The GM Authority Take
The GMC Terrain sales performance during the fourth quarter of 2019 was all that impressive. In fact, the 11 percent decline in U.S. sales follows lackluster performance in Q1 2019, a rebound in Q2 2019, and a decline in Q3.
Notably, the Chevrolet Equinox (see Chevrolet Equinox sales) also saw sales fall, with a decline of over 6 percent percent during the quarter. Combined, the two GM crossover vehicles still sold well over 115,000 units and accounted for 15 percent segment share. While the numbers are impressive, the duo was still outsold by the Toyota RAV4, which saw sales rise more than 14 percent to an impressive 123,446 units, enabling the vehicle to account for a 17 percent segment share.
It’s unclear whether availability and – ultimately – sales of the crossover were negatively impacted during the quarter, given that the Terrain is assembled in Mexico. However, it’s possible that the union’s 40 day-long walkout disrupted the supply chain activities needed to make the vehicle in Mexico.
For the 2020 model year, the most notable change to the Terrain is the deletion of the turbo-diesel engine. The change results in the loss of a shift at the GM San Luis Potosí plant where the Terrain is made. The Terrain gets a midcycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year. The 2021 GMC Terrain includes a freshened exterior design plus the addition of the Terrain AT4 model, along with various other minor enhancements and new features.

2 big things are wrong with the Terrain. The elimination of the transmission shifter. The push buttons suck. The other is the shape of both sides of the vehicle near the rear. It completely blocks the view and really creates a big blind spot. N.G.
It is because people are finding out about the problem with the GMC Terrain! I bought a used 2014 Terrain with only 69,000 miles on it and only got to drive it for around 2,000 miles until the piece of crap went down and when I looked up complaints on the Terrains man did I get an eye opener! They are junk and have been having problems with them and GMC knows about it but refuse to put a recall out on the problem! Makes me furious that I spent my inheritance from my aunt to buy this piece of crap that has now left me without a vehicle until I can try to get the money together to get it fixed!
A good friend of mine has a lower trim level 2015 GMC Terrain FWD closing in on 150K miles with but a headlight bulb, one front wheel bearing and the rear gas tank mounted purge valve being replaced and no other issues to report. He said this is the first vehicle he has ever bought to go this far without major mechanical issues and has been overall very happy with it.
With that said he checked out the current model and didn’t care for it citing the smaller turbo engine, the narrower front seats, the silly shift setup and the deletion of the sliding rear seat as negatives so will probably shop the competition next time around.
@Joe Yoman: Your post seems kind of like a response the the rather vague post by @Katherine. You just have to love when people post something like that, but without a shred of detail or evidence that all GMC Terrain’s are a “piece of crap” as the poster says. And I like her first line which says “people are finding out about the problem”. Very interesting. I know all vehicles can and will have problems. But I’m sure there are a ton of happy Terrain owners out there just like your friend.
Go to your computer the way I did and read the complaints and unsatisfied customers like I did and then you can find out for yourself! GMC has a class action lawsuit on them right now for the problems that people were and are having with this model! A judge has ruled in favor of the people because GM knew they had a problem and would not put out a recall. As for me I am to late for you had to file before May 19th. GM has to repay all of the GMC Terrain owners for all expenses that they have paid out and pay for them to get there vehicles repaired properly!
My opinion as to why this vehicle has struggled to maintain steady/increased sales in a red hot market? They went from a very GMC looking style on the last gen to this overly styled (not that good looking IMO) current version. This is NOT a market that wants over-the-top changes or style breakers! Just look at the Rav4 and CRV. Those two turds are steady in sales because neither of those brands have been willing to try and re-invent the segment.
GMC needs to re-design the Terrain in a more mainstream style that is very GMC. Make it premium from the Chevy version but not luxury like the Buick.
Big mistake to buy a 6 year old car w/o it being a CPO . I am on my 2nd Terrain , 2017 Denali with a v06 and not a 4-banger that sounds like a vacuum cleaner at start up . The old style in my opinion looks better than the new ones that look like every other CUV out there . Also I believe it’s all in the way the option list is designed . To get what others get as standard on lower level cars GM makes you have to move up a couple of trim levels . And the interiors of this generation looks cheap , using 1970’s wanna be wood , but my Denali actually has real wood as an accent on the doors and steering wheel . The ’21 refresh won’t be enough to raise sales , most customers won’t even know the diff.
