The GM Authority Take

The significant downward performance in Chevrolet Argentina sales in June comes as a result of two factors:

  1. Significant difficulties experienced by General Motors in South America as it relates to importing vehicles as a result of COVID-19.
  2. Production setbacks at key plants as a result of COVID-19-related supply chain issues.
  3. The stagnation in the demand for new vehicles in the Argentine market.

As a result, last month’s result becomes the second consecutive decline experienced by Chevrolet in Argentina after the 4 percent decrease in May.

The vast majority of the models offered by the Bow Tie brand in Argentina were in the red in June, with the Chevrolet Onix experiencing a drastic decline of 73 percent which is equivalent to 1,534 units less than the same month in the (already-low) 2020. The popular subcompact car is suffering a major commercial setback that puts its sales leadership at high risk, as it accumulates three months of paused production at the GM Gravataí plant in Brazil due to the shortage of semiconductors.

By contrast, the Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Tracker were the Chevy models that posted sales gains during the month. The Cruze, manufactured locally at the GM Alvear plant, finished as Chevrolet’s best-selling vehicle in Argentina for the second month in a row. The position is typically occupied by the more affordable Onix, indicating that more favorable supply is responsible for the Cruze outselling the Onix.

  1. Is this because of the ready availability of all the cars abandoned by Argentines who are invading our country?
