The new 2021 GMC Sierra is the third model year of the latest fourth-generation nameplate, arriving with a few changes and updates over the preceding 2020 model-year vehicle. Now, GM Authority has learned that new 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 orders in the Crew Cab Standard Box configuration are only available with 4WD.
This is a significant change, and it’s uncertain at this time if the configuration restriction will be in place for the rest of the 2021 model year.
Meanwhile, Regular Cab and Double Cab configurations of the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 can be ordered with either 2WD or 4WD, as can Crew Cab Short Box configurations. However, Crew Cab Standard Box configurations are only available with 4WD.
We reached out to General Motors for an explanation why new Crew Cab Standard Box orders are restricted to 4WD, but did not receive a reply. That said, it’s possible that given new GMC Sierra pickups are in very short supply, General Motors opted to simplify the ordering process and reduce the number of build configurations available.
The latest 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 arrives with a number of updates and changes, including the addition of four new exterior colors, new 22-inch Multi-spoke polished wheels, and the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. What’s more, the GMC MultiPro Tailgate is now available on SLE and AT4 trims.
With regard to the mechanical changes, models equipped with either the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gas engine or the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax engine offer higher maximum tow ratings than similarly equipped 2020 model-year vehicles. Now, nearly every configuration equipped with the turbo 2.7L engine adds an additional 2,300 pounds of trailering capacity, up to 9,200 pounds maximum, while models equipped with the 3.0L I6 turbo-diesel engine add an additional 1,900 pounds of trailering capacity with 2WD configurations, up to 9,300 pounds maximum.

Is wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay standard on all 2021 GMC Sierra Models? What about their Silverado counterpart?
Yes, but the cheap interior is still standard too.
The interior is only cheap when comparing the $60k+ models like the Denali and AT4. The standard SLE or LT trims are as good or better than the competition.
Yes, but the functional interior is still standard too.
Fixed that for you. Nothing really cheap about it, it is a truck. It is durable and extremely functional. You haven’t seen some of the wear and tear those dolled up Ram interiors are taking after a couple years of actual use and work. Keep the luxury car interiors in the luxury cars and CUV’s. This is a great interior, could use a little nip tuck but it has great materials and soft touch stuff at all the right points and most importantly it is robust and functional which can’t be said about some of the competitors. It just isn’t as visually appealing as the competition which who cares, it is a truck. Give me something that will last and works great than something that is pretty…
If it’s so good, why are they re-designing it?
So a person who wants a people mover (crew cab) and seldom needs a truck (wants a short bed) has to buy 4 wheel drive that they will never use since their area seldom gets snow and they NEVER go off-road. For a vehicle that costs so much, why not build what the customer wants?
This is the standard bed (6 1/2 ft), not the short bed (5 2/3 ft).
They probably sell 10 short beds for every 1 standard bed, so this is something of a niche product that they are restricting.
“can be ordered with either 2WD or 4WD, as can Crew Cab Short Box configuration”
Exactly what you are asking for is available.
Don’t hurt much, where I live I can’t fathom a 2wd pickup…
Though the other half of the country can, though many of their images won’t let them purchase a 2wd even though they will never use it.
Who would order a 2wd truck anyway???? Not here in Montana at least….
You lead a sheltered life. Most of America uses pickup trucks as daily transportation ( in place of cars) and seldom use the bed for anything more than groceries. Their idea of going “off-roading” is having to drive on the shoulder to get around a broken down vehicle.
There is no problem with 2WD Trucks, if you do not Off Road, I’ve also seen my share of 4×4’s that don’t look as if the get much Off Road time either, especially those who add on the Ground Effects Lighting Kit to the Undercarriage and the Wheel Well areas.
