More litigation is targeting GM over allegedly defective 8L45E and 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmissions, this time on behalf of 13 consumers who claim The General knew about the transmission issues, but failed to act on them by recalling and replacing the components.
As reported by Top Class Actions, this latest GM class action lawsuit is Ulrich, et al. v. General Motors LLC, Case No. 2:24-cv-11007-JJCG-EAS, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Southern Division.
The lawsuit claims that the affected transmissions are built with a defect that results in the valve bodies containing air that isn’t properly purged, related to problems with transmission fluid. These factors are said to cause delays in acceleration, shuddering, lurching, and “poor shift quality,” all of which can possibly contribute to boosting the risk of an accident or crash.
The class action suit goes on to assert that The General failed to correctly address the issue, which typically appeared around the time the vehicle warranty expired. The plaintiffs allege GM offered transmission fluid flushes free of charge for the affected 2014 through March 2019 transmissions, but did not recall and replace the transmissions.
Furthermore, engineers working at GM are said by the suit to have the vehicles recalled and the 8-speed automatics replaced at a cost of $305 per transmission. GM declined to do so in order to avoid the cost, which amounted to a whopping $592 million, except in the case of transmission replacements on vehicles still in inventory that would have sold while the transmissions were still under warranty, amounting to 6,518 units.
The models of vehicles using the transmissions mentioned in the lawsuit include the Cadillac CT5, the Cadillac CT5-V, the Cadillac CT6, the Cadillac Escalade SUV, the Chevy Silverado, the Chevy Colorado, the Chevy Corvette, the Chevy Camaro, the GMC Canyon, the GMC Yukon, and the GMC Sierra, among several others.
GM has been previously hit with at least two other class action suits related to the issue, including one in Michigan in March 2023 and another in Canada two months later in May 2023.
The General says it fixed issues by introducing a new build of the 8-speed transmission, currently found in the current-generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The automaker chose to upgrade the 8-speed rather than replace it with the ten-speed automatic transmission because the pickups’ turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R and turbocharged 2.7L I3 L3B engines produce so much torque that the two extra gears weren’t necessary.

17 corvette trans bad shifts dealer repaired elect problem $800 dollars no help ! changed trans fluid free. works properly at this time. orr chevrolet ft smith ar
Bought our son a new 2017 Camaro RS, V6, A8 when the 2018’s were just coming out, ($6200 off sticker with rebates & dealer discount before covid. Remember those type deals?). Dealer was about 1 hr 45 minutes . Wife drove it home & I noticed the shutter, but thought it was the bad NE MS highways. Read a thread about the shutter on Camaro6 and took the car to the Tupelo dealer with about 2K on it. Flush with same old fluid was no help in October. Read about new fluid and took it back in January. No problems since. Son really takes care of car and it still has less than 27K. Garnet Red Tintcoat with sunroof, 1lt. Gets compliments all the time on the car, even from people who don’t know what it is. Lower case gm made a real mistake dropping Camaro again. I had a 75 RS in college and my first new car I ever bought was a 79 Z28. Great cars.
Mayor of Golden MS?
The 8 speed automatic transmission is the worst version, this type is very bad, and made lots of problems with my customers.
General Motors should be ashamed of its self to sell this garbage to the it’s loyal customers, they say professional grade!!! That’s a laugh!!!
General Motors should be ashamed of its self to sell this garbage to the it’s loyal customers, they say professional grade!!! That’s a laugh, they knew they were defective, and didn’t care, you can’t wrong your customers
I have a 2021 silverado 1500 5.3 rst 4wd crew cab z71 now with 188k miles almost on it and at 97,488 miles the transmission went out due to the number 4 cylinder in the valve body got stuck and when i had it towed to nash chevrolet in Lawrenceville they told me what happened and a new one in the crate will be installed soon as it arrived. Thank goodness for the mastertech plan added bc it was a 5500.00 transmission i only paid 100.00 for. So far no issues other than needing a good flush soon. Gm yall need to get onto the plants whos dealing with quality controls and let them have it. They need to think of us as if we were their families too when it comes to our safety and lives at risk on the roads
It is not the plants it is the suppliers and the engineers and bean counters- if it is not built right the tests will not ship it.
I got 2019 Silverado from buying new when put in gear acts like natural and slims in gear dealer wouldn’t fix I will never buy Chevy again nice truck. But don’t stand behind trans problems
General Motors should be ashamed of its self to sell this garbage to the it’s loyal customers, they say professional grade!!! That’s a laugh, they knew they were defective, and didn’t care, you can’t wrong your customers
I performed the triple transmission flush (10 months ago) per the service bulletin on my 2018 cadillac ct6 platinum using the new blue label mobile 1 transmission fluid and changed the transmission fluid filter because of the transmission shudder. Completely resolved my transmission issues at this time. Plan on serving the fluid every 30k as I believe 100k service interval is unreasonable.
This makes me glad that my equinox 2.0t and the wife’s 2019 enclave have the 9 speed automatic! I guess whenever I ever shop for another car I will steer clear of these years with the 8 speed automatic. This makes GM’s reputation look bad they should have better quality control and start making the parts here instead of buying the components as cheaply as possible. But that’s the way with big corporations nowadays they want more profit for less spending and fewer hours worked by employees they rush the employees to get done on time and punch out God forbid the shareholders aren’t happy….hey the shareholders aren’t building my car or truck are they!?
The vehicles you are mentioning are fwd based. The transmission in the article is a RWD based one. So you’d never had the issue that this particular tranny has.
It doesn’t matter if it’s front drive or rear drive. GM is screwing up these transactions. Quality sucks no matter if it’s front or rear drive…
Have a Chevy bolt….can confirm I don’t have this transmission. Carry on.
I bought a used 2016 Traverse from OBX Chevrolet in Kitty Hawk, NC. The salesman told me it had a brand new transmission with a 5 yr warranty. First 3 months the powertrain computer module went out. They tried to charge me $1500 and I refused. Told them to take car back. They paid for repairs. 24 months later the input sensor went out. I was told the warranty was null and void once I bought the car. Absolutely ridiculous!!! They kept jerking me around with promise they were waiting to hear back from GM. After 13 weeks of keeping my car, they handed me an estimate for $1200. I tried to talk with the general manager, Marc Hellman to ask him to work with me to resolve the issue and he put his hands behind his head, leaned back in his chair and told me he owned me nothing. I had my car towed home, refusing to give these crooks a penny more of my money. My car was delivered to me with a flat tire off the rim and a dent on front grill. Tow truck driver told me the guys in the service department were laughing when he picked up my car. He was even appalled by their behavior. This is no way to treat a senior widow woman. I even called GM headquarters and got absolutely no where. Never ever again will I trust General Motors or OBX Chevrolet!!
You should have had the salesperson put in writing what you were told and had it signed by the dealership GM. You have no one to blame but yourself.
Big Richard! I guess you’re right since honesty and integrity isn’t something this dealership nor GM practice. I will definitely do better next time and steer away from liars and crooks. Thanks for your advise 👍🏼
I have a 2018 Chevy Colorado zr2 with a 8 speed transmission I have took it to the dealership several times they first charged the transmission fluid due to the transmission slipping and shuddered that didn’t fixed the problem. Then I took it back they said they replaced the valve body still having the same issue and new my truck is out of warranty! Thanks GM for not fixing the issues!
I first had the issue with my Colorado at 12,000km- service agent said “well dear, that’s what trucks are like”!!😡 issue was reported again at 28,000km (changed trans fluid), at 39,000km put in “good oil”!!!!😡and at 52,000 km was told “we couldn’t find anything”!!
Changed dealer at 90,000km and they replaced valve. Seems to have done the trick – extends the warranty by 20,000 km so I’ll see what happens. I’m checking out the law suit brought in April 2024. GM needs to step up!
How do I go about, getting in on the class action suit against Gm..for bad transmission.
I would like to know the answer to that question as well I need to get in on as my transmission has an issue too 2018 GMC SIERRA!!!
I have a 2019 Chevy Colorado. I had the transmission shudder and had the whole Mobil fluid flush and replace. Took care of that problem but it still shifts hard sometimes. I contacted a representative handling one of the class action lawsuits and was told if I own a vehicle with that tranny in it, I do not have to do anything. They go by registered owners of the vehicle in each state. So, you should be covered if GM is told to do a recall or pay compensation, or both. I’m not holding my breath though, because class action lawsuits can drag on for years.
Purchased my 2019 Chevy Silverado LT in January 2020. While pulling light loads, I noticed a shutter when upshifting or “fish bite”. While under warranty, left it with dealer for four weeks. I had to call to get diagnosis! They offered to do full flush (13 quarts). Since flush, I have driven +900 miles and noticed a barely detectable shutter. I will pull a trailer load and see.
Four weeks inexcusable
I’m going to be a bit different. I fully suspect that GM Powertrains did not design a bad transmission. Nobody wants to do that! To me, that’s just common sense.
My observed orientation is that the basic transmission is not bad, it’s the software running the transmission. The “shudder” is probably coming from a partially-engaged torque converter. ATF, and now synthetic ATF, can be friction-modified to address that. Our heavy-line shop foreman noted on a test drive, with the GM Tech laptop hooked to the vehicle, that on a highway section, the torque converter was locked-up at 50%, rather than 100%. Rather than alter the program, they made the torque converter more robust to take such activity “as normal”.
One of our customers had had every TSB action performed and the vehicle still acted up. When his vehicle got to 100K miles, out of warranty, he got an aftermarket tune for the transmission and all of his problems ceased to happen.
Now, why did GM not issue a better tune? Because the software in the vehicle was the one they used to get the vehicle certified for emissions and CAFE. No desire to re-certify the vehicles for EPA or CAFE, so they go “to the edge” of that boundary.
As to the $305.00/unit to replace the transmission, that is totally off-base. A crate transmission that costs over $5K with a parts+labor internal cost of $305.00? Totally unreasonable! Considering the multiple flushes of these transmissions, with the “spec” fluid, costs a good bit past that.
The new TurboMax 2.7L having enough torque that it doesn’t need 10-speeds? More bullfeathers, to me. It’s probably that the 2.7L Turbo has more torque than the 10-speed automatics can reliably handle.
To me, the class action lawsuits are flawed. On the claims of the litigants (as to GM knowing the transmission were flawed) and the replies of GM operatives claiming they were not.
Quality control can be one thing, BUT the width of what is acceptable, to be considered “in spec” could be where those issues end up. Might the “width” be too wide? They sure could. I suspect the Gen II transmissions did not address that fact!
Our 2018 Traverse transmission was replaced at 47k, under warranty, when it completely failed. At 111k we’re experiencing the “shudder”. I agree the TCM programming plays a role. Shutter does not happen in tow mode where higher shift points are used (I assume this mode locks converter as well). We did change oil at 100k per GM specs but were unaware of TSB change to Mobil 1. Dealer scheduled to do full drain, flush and Mobil 1 refill. Hopefully that resolves issue. Car has been flawless otherwise since 2018.
Your Traverse doesn’t use this transmission. This suit is for the 8 speed for rear wheel drive/4wd vehicles.
The real trouble was the fluid. It absorbed moisture and glazes the converter lock up disc.
Once glazed it will shudder.
The new fluid was made yo not only not absorb fluid bi\ut to also help recover the glazed converter. If the vehicle was not driven tons of miles shuddering it will recover. But if it shuddered too many miles then the converter needs replaced.
The dealers offered free flushed no questions asked as GM directed but some dealers did not do as told. If the converter did not recover with the flush the converter was replaced.
This was really a Mobil One issue.
I had mine flushed before it shuddered and still going well.
The lawsuits like this are more about legal firms picking this up is to make money off GM. They will not give you more than a free oil change or sone token discount..
I noted most good dealers are working with customers on this unless they have a ton of miles.
These problems are real and it is much more than just a fluid problem. When I had issues with my 2016 CTS I called a friend within the powertain group who was working on the issues. He was very clear that there was a concerted effort to take cost out of the transmission. Countless software patches were released but they had minimal affect. In fact so many changes were being made that they were losing control over the problem. Luckily I received a new trans that proved to be near perfect. As a final patch, a new fluid was released which helped but did not fully correct the problems. Some people are satisfied but others still have problems. Widespread transmission replacements will be extraordinarily expensive but some other companies would bite that bullet in order to keep their reputation.
I have a 2019 chevy camaro with this 8 speed transmission when I Stat to drive the transmission misses 2nd gear on the freeway in 8th gear it bogs out shudders really bad it really is dangerous driving this car..32,000 dollars and I have a piece of $hit the GM…
Spent enough $ on trying to fix bad shifts , mainly on the initial 1st to second gear shift gave me the most trouble after new fluids worked fine for one day then problem returned
2018 cts here. One time going downhill to stop sign, It actually lurched forward almost rear ending car in front. I think it was trying to downshift.
It got somewhat better after one flush, but still doesn’t seem right. Wonder if can get another free? 42,000 miles on it.
I have a 2019 silverado at 75000 miles my transmission was acting and all my dealership told me i need a transmission flush $765.dollars later it still is acting up .now i drive it and hopefully it don’t breakdown on a long trip
If GM was doing a free flush WHY did my dealership charge me $ 765.dollars . My Extended warranty said They won’t cover cause that’s part of a maintenance of flush,i think that someone owes me .
Wife wanted new ’18 Colorado for a grocery getter. Eighteen months later, 2700 miles, small riding mower on board, I felt shudder going uphill. Wife never noticed, not unusual for her. Local dealer who we had a history with happily did the repair even though we got the truck out of state. Fluid and filter, no charge. Told us to drive it 300 miles and see what we thought. Never went back until entertainment screen went nuts, $700. Only 9000 miles now.
Why you throwing your wife under the bus douche. Take a look at what you said about her. You’re an idiot
I have a 2019 GMC Sierra. A quite a bit of problem with the trans mission from the vehicle. When I bought it, Gm refused to address. The issue offered me a free transmission flush, but that did not work. Still having problems.
For those who choose the automatic transmission and not the manual with less parts and weight… I always choose the Manual and service it myself with my tools and buy my parts…Like Sevice Clutch and flywheel if need…
Have a 2016 traverse does this exact thing had tranny replaced still did it than had it rebuilt still did it and GM would t do anything even though we complained from whe truck had 20k on it…..they said it wasn’t throwing a code nothing they could do so went to a tranny shop had them replace and rebuild it….. transmission is still screwed I’m out 7k and gm does nothing.
GM canada does not back there vehicles I will not be buying g another GM after 40 yrs of nothing but GM guess I’ll try FORD.
We inherited a Buick with only 73.000 miles and the person was erdly and disabled, so it was driven very seldomly. The car was parked while running, and suddenly started to shutter and vibrate, then it went clunk and has a locked engine. We done GM.
2018 Silverado 112K, had to replace Trans $7K. No heavy towing, a small 4 x 7 trailer of household trash, and couple loads of wood during the winter in haul mode.
I had a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and at 114000 miles transmission did exactly what numerous comments described, how do I get in on class action suit that has been filed?
I have been simplying tolerating hard shifting and clanking in my 2015 Silverado since I bought it new. While under warranty, the dealership did flush transmission and replace torque converter. Since out of warranty, I have just learned to live with the poor quality transmission and am just waiting for it to completely fail one day. 190,000 miles to date.
I did the same thing with my 2006 Impala LT. Took it back to the dealership multiple times for slipping out of gear at a stop to long drawn out shifts to erratic shifting and slipping… I had to learn to live with and not rely heavily on it in the event I had to hard accelerate to avoid oncoming traffic… It’s a safety issue for sure… I won’t buy GM next time…
This is not the first time GM has sent defective transmissions into the public… Take the 2006 to 2013 Impala…. Transmission pressure solenoid problems galore and at very low mileage which causes the same issues as the above article… GM never issued a recall for this problem and wondered why the final gen of the Impala fell off in sales while other sedans from Toyota and Honda sold well…
After over one hundred years in the business of making cars you still have a lot to learn GM…
How do people in Texas become a part of the lawsuit?
My dad had a 2018 Sierra with the V6 engine. Transmission gave out at 60,020 miles. Literally 20 miles over warranty expired. GM covered half the repair. He got rid of it about two months later. He also has a 2017 2500 with the gas engine, has around 45,000 miles and the transmission is giving out. GM will not help because of the age. I hope his truck fits this issue because that repair is going to cost like 6k. We also both has a 2023 and 2024 Silverado with the 3.0 diesel. I will be on the look out for any issues. Kinda sad quality has been so bad lately.
Isn’t it ridiculous how with a hundred plus years of experience building transmissions they are getting worse… Take me back to the Turbo 350 and the Turbo 400 days when they actually knew how to make a reliable trans…
Next truck is going to be a Tundra! Sad state GM, Ram, Ford are in with quality issues. Always been a GM buyer but it’s time for change, at the price of a new truck you think the would have it together!
We bought a “certified pre-owned” 2019 Chevy Tahoe in 2021 that had approximately 40k miles on it at the time. 2 years later we experienced transmission problems. Apparently there is a known issue with the transmission fluid overheating and the torque converter failing with these models. Tried to get the dealer to do something and they said “it’s my problem”. Outside of certified warranty because the vehicle has over 100k miles now on the odometer. Very frustrating that this appears to be a known issue. Terrible customer service. It’s the car that my wife takes to go to her appointments at the Cleveland clinic for her cancer treatments. She picked this car because at the time we thought GM was a good manufacturer. After this experience I can honestly say we will never buy another GM product again. It makes sense to me that they were one of the first to go bankrupt in 09’…sorry to see not much has changed over the years…
With my 2006 Impala I got the runaround at the dealership. They would always say they couldn’t duplicate the problem. It was so frustrating and then the warranty expired. The transmission would slip on the start and erratic shifting…. I would never buy GM again after this car…
I recently talked with the dealership near me. They told me that this normal operation. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. People buy these 60-70k trucks and this is what to expect. Later he told me that the Valve Body might going, the Torque Convertor is going, both will need to be replaced at a cost about 4k for each job. Asked about the price of a new transmission, about 8k for remanufactored. I and others shouldn’t have to pay this.
Lots of Silverados on lifts at my local Chevy dealer that are only a few yrs old waiting on transmission rebuilds but no parts available. These are newer trucks, 2021,22. So much for the newer fluid being the cure all. The 8 spd is junk, stay away from them.
The trouble with gm automatic transmissions first reared its ugly head when they added the dreaded overdrive gear to the three speed automatics and it only got worse from there…
Never was right, dealership said servicing/replacing the harness electronics would correct it.
Then they said it needed the fluid to be triple flushed and charged me 900 dollars to do it.
They knew the flush would help it and is not required on cars with a good transmission, but charged me anyway.
No morals or responsibility/accountability to their customers.
Gm is a sinking ship. They don’t stand behind their automobiles…
It’s not even a quality control issue. It’s crap engineering and having customers do the testing. This ain’t the first or the last time they screw over the people to pad their pockets. Gm won’t even issue a recall unless it’s a government mandated safety issue. Used to be a good company but now makes $100,000 unreliable vehicles. They certainly aren’t build back better or making America vehicles great again!!!!
I own a 2018 Chevy Colorado z71 4×4, with 83000 miles. I has an 8 speed automatic transmission. Approximately 2.5 years and 32000 miles and on vacation some 500 miles away from home my transmission started shutting so I took it to the local Chevy dealer and they changed the fluid in the torque converter. It drove like it was brand new and no other problems 4 years later and 83k total miles

I bought a used 2019 Sierra in 2020 with 16,000 miles. Noticed a shudder in the transmission late this winter. Was told it needed to be flushed. Cost me $551 and runs great now. GM refused to compensate me in anyway. I wasn’t asking for a full reimbursement, just pay the labor. I had no clue there were issues with that transmission until mine started. I’ll never buy another GM vehicle.
I have a 19 silverado I bought used with around 59k miles. Shifted rough from day 1. Especially when cold. Trans flush did little to correct it. If gm has a low cost fix..I’d love to get it.
I have a 2014 buick regal premium 2.0 4cly turbo. 140,000 miles and the transmission started to have the same issue at 120,000. Took it to the dealer and a certified mechanic and all 3 of them said transmission! No check engine light on..
I’ll stick with my 2-speed powerglide that’s in my 68 Firebird.
Now that is a tough transmission. Knew an ole boy who had a 60’s Camaro with a 396 with a two speed power glide. He would hold it in first to 65 mph then hit the warp drive and hold it down until he lost his nerve.
So is g I’m gonna file bankruptcy over the transmission problems that they’re having or are they gonna fix them or are they gonna file bankruptcy and ask the taxpayers for a bailout?
Too many problems with American made vehicles. I have 2005 Toyota Tundra with over 200,000 miles and engine/transmission/4 wheel drive work perfectly. Mfged in the US with imported parts. I also have 2019 Mazda CX5 35000 miles, it hasn’t missed a beat.
I was never notified of a recall from Chevrolet for this transmission. I bought my truck new in 2018. My 2018 Chevy Colorado just hit 31,000 miles and now I’m having problems and they will not help me. If they had sent me a notification letter or recall letter I would have brought my vehicle in for repairs. I have lost all faith in General Motors.
Have a 19 Canyon- Just started to shudder – I have only 27000 miles on it and Dealership will not cover a trans fluid flush because they say I am out of warranty by 6 months (bought in Oct 18) told me it would cost $550 for the flush – when it is a known problem and thousands of customers are dealing with this problem GM should fix each and every one of this for free THEY WILL LOSE CUSTOMERS OVER THIS!!!
So sorry, but join the club there’s about 800,000 of us , it really a crime that they could charge so much money for something they knew was defective
You can Diy transm flush pretty ez, just you tube it, have 3 gallons handy..and an empty 1 gallon jug. You will need an assistant, you have to remove a small clip from the radiator( buy a box of replacements(4$)..I tie a foot of fishing line to it so if I drop it I can find it.
I grew up in a family owned Western Auto store and bought my first GM truck, a used ’49 when I was 15. I am now a “Chevy legend” having bought 17 new GM trucks. I bought a loaded 2018 with a 6.2L and a 8 speed auto as my retirement truck. The truck now has 35K miles. For the last few years I have noticed a road rumble. Never dreamed it would be caused by inferior transmission fluid. Now GM will do nothing about it, they say the fluid flush is normal maintenance even though the truck has 35K miles and the owners manual states first change it at 45K. GM service bulletins say the problem is caused by the inferior Dextron VI fluid the factory installed in the transmission at the factory. They now say to use Mobil 1 LV ATF HP which costs $15 a quart and requires dealer installation at $400. The problem was identified back in 2019 in bulletin 18-NA-355. What they should have done is contact every owner back then and switched out the ATF to the good stuff. But they are now denying responsibility. Shame on them. They sure are losing loyalty from GM owners like me. Forget about class action suits, I had several trucks with the exploding fuel tanks back the the 80’s and never got a cent. And remember GM royally screwed their bond holders in the last recession. Too bad, an American icon gone to hell
how do i put a claim in for my 2018 GMC serria LTS with only 65000 miles the tranismision is acting up will i need to be on the lawsuite for this problem thanks bud
how do i put a claim in for my 2018 GMC serria LTS with only 65000 miles the tranismision is acting up
How do I get listed in the lawsuit, I have a 2016 CT6 Platinum, ongoing problems with the transmission. Before the warranty expired, they worked on it and make me pay 900 for a transmission flush!!
The trans still is not right.
How can a manufacture not be held accountable to correct the problem and the customers left with all the problems??
I bought a 2017 Yukon XL, but it’s a 6 speed. I am having the same issues with the transmission. The transmission failed while driving before 35,000 miles and GMC “fixed” it (apparently they only addressed 3rd and 4th gears). The Yukon never shifted right but I was told “it was fine”. Then at 130,000 I had to have the entire transmission replaced, but of course GMC took ZERO accountability. How can this be legal? Not to mention the 17 other manufacturing defects that I had to deal with. How do we get the 6-speed covered under the lawsuit so maybe I can get a refund for the cost of the most recent transmission that I had to pay for?
I had this issue on my ’18 Sierra and thought I could help others thru this. Problem is described in GM bulletin 18-NA-355 as due to an inferior fluid (DEX VI) GM used at the factory. Most 8 speeds from ’15 to early ’19 were factory filled with this. GM figured it out in Aug. ’19 and recommended a flush and refill with synthetic low viscosity Mobil ATF (at $15/qt even at Walmart). Dealer knew of this problem and told me to call GM. They told me that flushing was normal maintenance even when the truck had only 35K miles and owners manual says ATF didn’t need changing to 45K mi. Dealers get about $400 to flush and change with their dandy GM flush cart and another $400 if you want the pan dropped and filter changed. Being a old guy with 50 years of chevy trucks I decided to go old school on the problem. I ordered up a GM filter for $15 at Rock auto, then a Dorman #65241 pan drain kit ($6) from Amazon, then bought 2 gallons of Valvoline MaxLife full synthetic ATF with “anti-shudder additive” ($40). Dropped the pan, the oil looked congealed like motor oil. Changed the filter and drilled a 1/2″ hole for the oil pan drain. About 6 quarts drain out. Then I took the 10mm bolt out of the tranny heat shield on the passenger side to access the fill plug. Added oil till it ran out of check bolt and ran it thru the gears till 110F. Rechecked the fluid and added till I got a weak stream out of check bolt. Truck drove better immediately, after 100 miles and 4 hot/cold cycles the problem is totally gone. Now with the oil pan drain installed I can easily change the ATF again which I will do at the next engine oil change. GM should have owned the problem but tried to hit me for $800. I think I did a better long term fix for $61. I have bought 17 new GM trucks in my life for my small family business but will look at other brands next purchase. Seems like the new GM cares for their loyal customers like they cared for their old stockholders. What a shame.
Here’s an update on my cheap fix for this problem. Over 500 miles now and no more shudder or rough shifts. In reviewing YouTube videos on the 8 speed I saw that GM is installing a stand pipe on the fluid level check bolt on the 8 speeds they are using in the mid-size Colorado trucks. This stand pipe raises the ATF level in the transmission so it holds more. If that is good for the Colorado, why not the full size truck too? I am going to buy one of these check bolts with the standpipe for my truck so it holds a bit more ATF. I also see my transmission running cooler with the Valvoline Max Life ATF. I will update again once I change the ATF again, add lubegard shutter additive and raise the fluid level to that of the Colorado. The old GM used to listen to shade tree mechanics like me and realize that sometimes their engineers just got things wrong.
I bought a 2019 chevy camaro v6 with the 8 speed transmission and I have a bad shutter abnormal shifting the dealer tried to tell me the transmission is programed to the way you drive so they reprogrammed the transmission to the way I drive they said bring it back in 500 miles I can barely drive the car now.im almost ready to drive this car right thru the plate glass windows and park it right next to the brand new corvette on the showroom floor..GM really needs to fix the 8 speed transmission….
Our 2020 Chevy Silverado transmission has gone out. Please allow us to join lawsuit! It’s maddening that they were aware of the issue.
I bought my 2017 Silverado 6.2 and 8 speed new at Russell Chevrolet, Sherwood, AR. At 38,000 miles last month, the trans started shuddering. I called Russell Chevrolet and talked to a service advisor named Gary. He said he didn’t know of any problems with that trans and would get back to me. He didn’t and I called back. I then informed him about the TSB and the new trans fluid. He said it didn’t matter, my truck was out of warranty and it would be $765 to change the trans fluid. I called Gwatney Chevrolet in Jacksonville, AR about my problem. Gwatney Chevrolet replaced the trans fluid for free having GM cover it. Shuddering problem stopped with the new Mobil One HP trans fluid. I won’t be going back to Russell Chevrolet.
My GMC Sierra was a year newer than yours and with less miles and GM would do nothing to help me. The dealer wanted to help but GM “customer care” refused to do anything, calling changing the ATF “routine maintenance” even though the owners manual says the ATF doesn’t need to be changed until 45,000 miles. So you won the GM service roulette wheel. I hope Gwatney got paid by GM for taking good care of you and doing the right thing.
Having transmission problems again with 2017 LTZ 6.2 8speed transmission.
Me too. Not that it was ever great, but it’s starting to slip and shift hard again. The tranny was a new replacement when I purchased the truck last year. It only has about 20,000 miles on it, give or take. It was shuttering and doing the whole gambit when I bought the truck used (tranny was brand new, 0 mile on it). Had the flush performed and Mobil 1 put in and it stopped shuttering. But the shifting was never great. The slipping pretty much went away until a week or so ago. The horrible shuttering hasn’t returned, but IMO it’s on its way back to haunt me again. This time the dealership won’t pay for the flush.
2019 Chevy Colorado.
I just turned in my vehicle and had my legal case against GM come to an end. I purchased a 2017 Camaro RS 50 year anniversary edition brand new. I experienced transmission issues within 7,000 miles. Shuddering, Hard shifting, loss in acceleration. The level of distrust I have for GM and their service department. They made me feel as if I was going crazy reporting the issues gaslighting me. Had multiple flushes, an ecm update and a replaced torque converter. Took it in a total of 6 times. After reading the service bulletins years later I hope GM pays for this disaster exponentially . Thankfully I caught it in time. Received full reimbursement plus punitive damages. These vehicles are Lemons. Vehicle had just under 125,000 miles when I turned it in. Do your own research and save all your service invoices.
GM is going to reimburse you the full purchase price after 125k miles?
Yes due to the fact that my first repair attempt was reported at 7,000 miles my first oil change. The mileage offset was roughly $1,800. The later you wait to report the issue the more you’ll pay for usage of the vehicle. Subsequent to your general limited warranty period the BBB won’t do anything to assist you and they’re realistically in bed with the auto manufacturers. Don’t wait longer than 7 years. Seek legal representation asap!
