Competitive Sales Comparison
Buick Enclave sales place the large three-row crossover in fourth place (out of seven rivals) in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Acura MDX in first, the Infiniti QX60 in second and and Volvo XC90 in third (see Volvo XC90 sales). The Enclave outsold the Audi Q7 by 43 units, keeping the German rival in fifth (see Audi Q7 sales), along with the new Cadillac XT6 in sixth and new Lincoln Aviator in seventh. Availability of the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator was limited during the quarter, with the first units of the XT6 arriving toward the end of Q2 and the first units of the Aviator arriving mid-Q3.
From a segment share standpoint, the MDX led the way with a 21 percent share, followed by the QX60 with 16 percent and Volvo XC90 with 15 percent. The Buick Enclave and Audi Q7 took 14 percent each, while the Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator accounted for 10 and 9 percent, respectively.
The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment expanded 14 percent to 71,016 units in Q4 2019.

For the sake of reference, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV, the vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes in the general space as the aforementioned models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales.

The GM Authority Take
Buick Enclave sales performance in the final quarter of 2019 was disappointing, after the nameplate showed very healthy growth in a highly competitive segment during the third quarter of 2019, 21 percent growth in Q2 and a 27 percent climb in Q1. But despite the drop in both sales volume and segment share, the Enclave retained a competitive spot in a tough segment.
We believe the UAW strike is one of the biggest factors that impeded Buick Enclave sales during the fourth quarter. The walkout sapped dealers of new models to sell as they sold out of on-the-ground units. We believe that Buick Enclave sales will rebound during the 2020 calendar year, as GM replenishes inventory while delivers on all levels, including product, marketing and sales operations. The product is, arguably, the most important of these elements, and the Enclave hits the mark as a result of a very good, practical, and highly attractive offering that has the right combination of style, comfort, technology, and value. In fact, the upcoming 2021 Enclave refresh should make the product even more competitive still.
For the 2020 calendar year, we expect Enclave to continue being among the sales leaders from a sales volume standpoint in its segment due to the following factors:
- A highly competitive second-generation model that is attracting new customers
- A value-laden vehicle at an attractive price point, which is about $10,000 more affordable than more-expensive rivals such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90—which are not only smaller, but also offer less in terms of features and therefore value
- An ongoing change in market vehicle buying dynamics that sees car buyers continue switching to crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) from other vehicle types like sedans
However, we believe that the following two factors will provide headwinds:
- Competition from the aforementioned Lexus RXL – a three-row variant of the best-selling Lexus RX that dominates its segment from a sales volume standpoint.
- The launch of the Cadillac XT6 and new Lincoln Aviator, which are similar to the Enclave in terms of utility, size and seating capacity, but more expensive. The Enclave starts in the vicinity of $40,000 compared to the $52,695 entry-level price for the XT6 and $51,100 starting price for the Lincoln. In that regard, Buick can continue using its positioning as a value luxury brand to its advantage.

Excuses, excuses….This vehicle competes with only the Acura, no Q7 or XC90 shopper looks at this…
Here is the reason for its sales drop: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison-test/a29516727/new-3-row-suvs-compared
It’s hard to love the vehicle that costs the most and offers the least content. The Enclave also lacks the design and materials to justify that premium price.
Typical GM!
Your so wrong, those reviews are not working it they were noone would be buying the XT6. If you add the XT6 and Enclave they beat everyone except for the Lexux Rx. Can’t figure out to this day why that ugly thing sell. So again all the naysayers are wrong.
Xjug:
I sell Volvo. I used to sell Buick. I don’t think you are wrong. I know you are wrong.
I’ve sold Honda’s and they don’t come close to anything Buick, not even the Acura. The Q7 is nothing more than the higher priced VW, and that doesn’t say much. Yes, the Buick is a nicer and higher priced Traverse unless you get the loaded up Chevy version. Then not much difference.
So tell me Xjug: when is the last time you actually drove a Buick? The Volvo? Based on the reliability of the Volvo (or certain lack thereof), the Buick is well above the other brands you mention and so many more.
OH, in case you missed this article since I’m sure it doesn’t fit your anti-GM bias:
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/02/buick-ranked-best-mass-market-brand-in-2020-j-d-power-vehicle-dependability-study/
Make it easy for you Xjug:
VW down 13 points from Buick.
BMW down 20
Audi down 33
Acura down 36
Volvo down 82
Only Lexus and Genesis were above Buick. And this great ranking by Buick is not new. Go back and research 5, 10, 15, 20, even 30 years ago.
i agree. i think people shop by price.
the enclave starts at $40K, the q7 $54K, XC90 $48K MDX at $44K, QX60 at $44K, and the aviator $51K.
those who have the money for an audi are not considering buick. if anyone thinks buick has the same brand prestige as an audi, they are delusional.
Who needs a reliable 3.6 in the Enclave, when you can have a supercharged/turbocharged 4cyl in the XC90……lol
LOL. I actually like the Volvo’s, but hate the lack of reliability! And yes, the biggest mistake they have made was to super and turbo charge a 2.0L 4cyl. Especially in the XC90, we see tons of them coming in with brand new crate engines from Volvo to swap. Just way too much for that small an engine. And don’t even get me going on the number of Volvo buy-backs I’ve seen in the 4 years I’ve been here. They have more in one year than I’ve seen in 12 years at the Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Honda store combined. And of the very few I’ve seen in those 12 years, most were Honda’s!!
While I have always questioned the powertrain of the XC90 the vehicle is exquisite inside for sure, and out. The XT6 looks like a poor copy in contrast.
Look all you guys can say whatever you want, doesn’t make you right. And Volvo/Buick sales guy, again you can say whatever you want but I doubt very many folks come in to look at the XC90 and leave in the Buick… BUT I can see folks looking at the Buick and leaving in the Volvo.
Honda commenter – The Acura MDX is a nice vehicle and nicer than this Buick. GM is a cost cutting nickel & dime machine that is losing market share, losing money and leaving markets all over the globe. They NOW say they’re looking to improve their interiors why… because they’re crap… everyone except you knuckleheads admit it… Car & Driver isn’t a GM hater they stated what they did based on their knowledge of the vehicles tested… I could have not read the article and known they’d say the interior stinks…. because it SUCKS compared to the other vehicles, possible exception to the Explorer. This goof who wrote this GM-A article puts the Buick in competition with the Aviator… puuuulllllleaaasssee…. the XT6 interior sux compared to the Avaitor AND the Volvo….
Every comment above is opinion as is mine, but the C&D is an extremely reputable non-biased source… GM interiors stink, thus they are striving to improve them. That said the new Hyundai Sante Fe interior blows any currently avaiable GM interior away… Palisade and Telluride too…. THATS pathetic…. BTW – I saw (on line) the Escalade interior and thought it was fabulous… love to see it in person_
Two things Xjug: First, tell me how the people shelling out the large number of bucks for the Volvo XC90 feel when the dashes are falling apart in under a year? When the sunroof screen droops and hangs down like a stretched out old t-shirt? When the cheap vinyl on the doors (mostly just the s60/xc60’s gets a tear from a finger nail?
Second: Please share with me how first-hand selling of these exact vehicles and seeing first hand the issues (or lack of) becomes an “opinion”? No sir, an opinion would be something like this:
I think the Buick Enclave is a better looking car than the XC90. Or, the Encore and all GM interiors are junk.
A factual statement would be such as: Buick consistently out-ranks Volvo and most other brands year after year by the likes of JD Power and Consumer reports.
You’re welcome.
Big Ole Dan… who cares what you say? You’re a used car sales man so THAT carries zero weight… I’m quoting C&D a respected automotive publication for 60+ years… and countless other publications with no axe to grind. GM does’t add value and thats one reason they’re losing… Hyundai makes better interiors than any current GM vehicle because they want to grow and increase market share and profits…. GM is cheap skating their way to bankruptcy and its quite evident in that endeavor, they are being successful… Now get back out there on the floor and get to that dork stroke…
@xjug: So grown up of you. You just keep reading the car mags that are all about enthusiast. Probably best so you don’t feel so bad driving your Elantra down the street.
quit blogging when you should be out on the lot offering up the floor mats…. better yet since you think these vehicles are actually offering value, perhaps you can help this ship wreck of a company sell their overpriced, underwhelming flotsam & jetsam…. just look it up….
Xjug: Can you read? I DO NOT sell Buick or any GM now. I sold them starting in 1988 till 1995 and again 2007 to 2010. My last sales with anything GM was with Cadillac in 2014. But you are aware that I now sell Mazda and Volvo just as I stated, as we all know you can read…….Car and Driver at least! Because they are the “authority” in anything automotive AND they NEVER inject opinions into articles. Right? C & D has never been about American brands. They (as are most auto mags) mainly about performance and excitement. That sells. And it’s why I dropped my C & D subscription years ago. But read what you want, like what you want, and enjoy the Elantra.
Aviator is the one for me. Surprised me and now I am not so sure about the others.
As much as I like the look of the XT6, I can’t get pass the powertrain or lack there of and like everyone has stated the boring interior. Others has commented its selling so well but even after being out a full quarter before the Aviator (which I don’t like) has only 3k more sales despite the quality issues they had. As a Cadillac owner, I expect a better product rather than just a bunch of excuses and dreams. Buick has its issues but at least they market and sell their vehicles to their core successfully. If they can just get the materials quality up they will probably be right behind Lexus in sales.
This is solely due to the strike and will be temporary.
This generation Enclave is a fantastic design that looks great while in motion. If all Buick vehicles looked this sharp the brand would be thriving.
great lines on the exterior and interior but as GM norm some cheap looking plastic . but people think all Buicks are foreign assembled
