The all-new 2023 GMC Canyon offers four new exterior colors when compared to the last-gen 2022 model: Sterling Metallic, Solar Flare Metallic, Deep Bronze Metallic, and Volcanic Red Tintcoat. Here’s our first look at the new Red hue.
Assigned RPO code GNT and touch-up paint code WA-170H, Volcanic Red Tintcoat is one of eight exterior colors offered on the next-generation midsize pickup truck, which include:
- Summit White
- Onyx Black
- Desert Sand Metallic
- Dynamic Blue Metallic
- Sterling Metallic (new for 2023)
- Solar Flare Metallic (new for 2023)
- Deep Bronze Metallic (new for 2023)
- Volcanic Red Tintcoat (new for 2023)
The Volcanic Red Tintcoat color is an extra-cost option priced at $645. It is available on all trim levels and can be combined with all available interior colorways.
For reference, here are the four available interior colorways offered on the 2023 Canyon:
- Jet Black (Elevation)
- Jet Black/Timber (AT4)
- Obsidian Rush (AT4X)
- Jet Black/Teak (Denali)
In August 2022, GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the new, third generation of the midsize pickup. Highlights include new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, revised suspension, a range of new technologies, plus the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X. The new model is available in four trim levels: Elevation, Denali, AT4, and the aforementioned AT4X, offering an exclusive Edition 1 package, which sold out in just 10 minutes. All trims except the AT4X feature a factory two-inch suspension lift, enabling ground clearance of up to 9.6 inches, while a dedicated off-road performance display page in the infotainment system is standard on all models.
The 2023 GMC Canyon also gets a new tailgate-mounted storage compartment, plus new wheel designs up to 22 inches is size and new CoreTec seat material. The new model also continues to offer the Denali Black Edition package.
The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X features an extra one-inch lift over the rest of the line for a total of three inches, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff. Inside, the Canyon AT4X includes an Obsidian Rush colorway with Ceramic White accents. The Edition 1 package mentioned earlier aims to make the new off-road-ready AT4X trim level even more appealing with a variety of exclusive off-road parts and components.
It’s worth noting that the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 gets an optional Off-Road Lift Package to match the three-inch lift included on the Canyon AT4X.
A GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is still coming and will include a number of important upgrades over the standard, 2023 Canyon AT4X.
Under the hood, all 2023 GMC Canyon models are equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High Output tune rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The boosted four is mated to an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings. The midsize pickup truck rides on an updated version of the same GMT 31XX platform, internally known by GM as 31XX-2.
Production of the 2023 GMC Canyon started on January 24th at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, while the AT4X will go into production in the spring of 2023.

I thought this was originally already discussed. Volcanic red tin coat was available on all canyons, but guess what it’s on factory constraint so we can build it along with all of the other colors LOL a crazy roll out for sure. Still waiting. Good luck, ladies and gentlemen.
This is likely the best looking color on this truck, but the fact that GM has decided to only offer them with the short bed, is a killer for me. They do foolish crap like offering 3 different versions of the same engine, but can’t give you a long bed, I just don’t understand.
I agree. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Give the availability to build the truck we want and pay the cost for the options (V6 or long bed ) ….
Just like $645 for this color and the trim levels !
They’ve done the research, probably dropped it because most get the short bed anyway and with supply constraints, is easier to build one body configuration. The 3 engine versions are just software updates. So no supply constraints there. I’ve never seen a 6ft bed Colorado or Canyon.
I always buy bright red pickup trucks. It’s just my thing, and I know that I am one of many who likes bright red — whether GM calls it Victory red. Red Hot, or Cardinal red. I don’t understand why in recent years GM has moved away from giving us a bright red option on its most popular or higher end trucks. I don’t want Volcanic Red Tintcoat, Crimson tint coat, or some fancy variation. It frustrates me. I’ll look to another maker to get what I want.
Just bought a 2023 Terrain Denali in this color. Really looks sharp. As for short bed only on the new Canyon, the vast majority of previous sales were for this body. They do, however, offer a folding tailgate that allows sheets of plywood to be carried, resting on the wheel wells and the folded gate.
I can’t remember the last time I hauled a sheet of plywood in my truck.
Checked the web site and the 2023 wheel base increased by 3.1″ to 131.40. Longer WB usually means a higher tow rating and a smoother ride. Overall length barely an inch longer. A nice truck if all you want is a black interior.
When for sure are the already built rd 23 canyons going to be shipped to the dealership
Ordered my Canyon Denali on Jan 27…Then the spec’s on equipment changed. No way to verify whats coming on it. Nor do they care.
Can’t make a change according to the Dealer. If it is not right or takes a ridiculous amount time, I will just walk away.
Already tired of GM’s lack of info, changing spec’s and no customer service. Almost 2 months and no one has a clue when it may be built. shipping is another problem. For the few that have been built, carriers are scarce. Delivery is uncertain.
My Canyon Denali that was ordered on Jan 27, came in June 12…It only had 3/4 of the trailer hitch. They wanted $400 for the 2
inch receiver tube to complete it….Thats gauging. I would have almost given in to that until they said it had front undercarriage damage. Probably due to the trailer driver running the tie down straps over steering linkage. Figured that was a bad omen. Gave it up..Plus it should now be a 2024. 2024 GMC full size trucks are already on the lots.
Maybe i will try next year.
