The Chevy Equinox (see running Chevy Equinox sales), the Terrain’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate, took third with a solid 44 percent jump to 46,646 units. The Nissan Rogue placed fourth with a 19 percent drop to 42,460 units, pushing the Hyundai Tucson to fifth with a 28 percent increase to 41,554 units. Overall, the compact crossover segment grew four percent to 516,893 units, meaning Terrain sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
GMC Terrain sales performed well despite various production-related constraints in the past. Since no 2022 GMC Terrain units were built between June and November 2021, the compact crossover’s availability at dealer lots was substantially diminished. In fact, the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage has disrupted production of the 2022 GMC Terrain on multiple occasions, impacting both available inventory and resulting sales volume. In January 2022, production finally commenced for the 2022 GMC Terrain AT4 and Denali at the GM San Luis Potosi plant, per GM’s tiered rollout cadence for the refreshed (2022) model. Better yet, GM announced in March that it will increase production of the Equinox and Terrain in Mexico, a decision the automaker affirmed in June.
The 2023 GMC Terrain arrives as the sixth model year of the latest second-gen Terrain. It introduces a few critical changes and updates as compared to the fully refreshed 2022 GMC Terrain, which debuted updated looks, several new features, as well as the new Terrain AT4 as a new off-road-flavored trim that is offered exclusively with AWD.
One of the updates for 2023 is a new powerplant, namely the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, which is rated at 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The new turbocharged engine will replace the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine previously equipped on the 2022 Terrain. Notably, output is similar between the two boosted four-cylinder engines, with the LYX rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The 2023 Terrain will continue utilizing the GM 9-speed automatic transmission for cog swaps, the same transmission configuration used by the 2022 model.
The 2023 Terrain is also equipped with an electro-hydraulic braking system, meaning GMC’s crossover will follow in the footsteps of another small crossover in the GM vehicle portfolio – the Cadillac XT4, which has featured e-assist brakes for a few years now. Cadillac says this system can enhance fuel economy and takes up less space under the vehicle’s hood, replacing the traditional vacuum-assisted brake setup.
On a related note, GM is asking its dealerships to increase sales of GMC Terrain Denali units equipped with the Black Diamond Edition package up to 40 percent (of the Denali mix). The package, which is only available on the Denali trim level, brings a bevy of features for the exterior and interior.
Production for the 2023 Terrain commenced at the GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico on August 22nd, 2022. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 model year.
Enhancements to the Terrain are good news as competition continues to be fierce in the mainstream compact crossover segment. In July, Honda CR-V debuted a next-generation model for 2023, to which GM has an answer.
During the recent GM Investor Day event held November 17th, GM President Mark Reuss provided a few interesting insights with regard to the upcoming next-gen GMC Terrain. He stated that, like the Chevy Equinox, the GMC Terrain competed “in the largest segment in the world,” and that the next-gen model would receive “sort of the GMC Professional Grade upgrade.”
“I gotta tell you, it’s one of the most beautiful SUVs in that segment” Reuss said. “Again, very GMC, very truck, very Professional Grade, so a big interior and exterior enhancement for the Terrain.”
The upcoming next-gen GMC Terrain will debut during the 2024 calendar year, and will be offered for either the 2024 or 2025 model year.
