Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain Production To Increase In Mexico

GM has decided to increase production of the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain compact crossovers at its San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.
During a recent interview with GM Authority assistant editor Marcos Bureau, GM Mexico public relations and communications manager Manuel Ávila Fonseca said the San Luis Potosí plant is now capable of producing more Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain units than it was previously, as the Chevy Onix compact car is no longer being built at the facility.
This means GM will be able to keep pace with demand for the two nameplates, despite Equinox production having been dropped from the GM CAMI plant in Ontario this year. The CAMI facility is currently being retooled to build the BrightDrop Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 battery-electric delivery vans. In addition to the San Luis Potosí plant, the Equinox is also produced at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.
As we reported in May, the Onix is now being exported into Mexico from China, where it’s produced at the GM Dong Yue plant in Shandong. While the automaker also produces the Onix at the Gravataí plant in Brazil, the Chinese plant handles production of models destined for Mexico, as the Gravataí plant is already near capacity due to strong domestic demand for the vehicle.
The current 2022 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain ride on the GM D2 platform and feature a turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine rated at 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. However, GM will introduce the new 175-horsepower, turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD engine to the Equinox and Terrain for the 2023 model year.

So they’re picking up the deficit left by the closure. Maybe that’s good that it still continues to sell decently.
It’s a great machine, my wife has a 2019 Equinox and we love it.
They need to increase inspection because there quality is lacking in fit and finish. Body prep sucks. Low grade materials are being used in the interior. Especially for what you are charging.
More work being moved to low wage countries. Way to go gm!
They are a for-profit company, not a charity.
Are you jumping on BMW, Mercedes, and VW for building stuff in the US because the labor costs are cheaper than Germany?
Grizzly,
There’s a number of reasons why I wouldn’t buy any of the German makes and that would be one of them.
Let’s face it if gm can afford Barra’s astronomical salary they can certainly afford UAW / CAW wages.
And I’m quite sure none of the clothes on your back or shoes on your feet or any products around your house were made in communist China?? Right?
Big difference between a $10 shirt or $30 pair of shoes and a $30,000 vehicle.
Not a good look on gm’s part as they are looking for the government to give them tax credits for EVs.
Biden (if not thrown out) will give out lots of taxpayers’ money for EV production… to satisfy the squad…
Mexico also Builds Audi Q5, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes GLA, VW TAOS, VW Jetta and VW Golf.
no…. way to go Biden…
Don’t be introducing facts into the conversation.
I had my car at the dealer for service and had the chance to go into the service bay and an Equinox was back there with the engine sitting out next to it. It was a MY2022 with 8k miles and the engine blew up.
I am disappointed that you are moving the equinox to Mexico. I bought a 2020 and my wife and I love it. I will only buy a car that is made in Canada or the U S. We were planning on buying another equinox in a couple of years when we upgrade but will now have to look elsewhere.
try looking at the GMC Acadia… I have the 2022 Acadia Denali AWD V6 and love it… I believe they are made in Tennessee.
Just keep that oil changed.
Those 3.6 liter engines are known to have stretched timing chains at 80,000 miles
I change oil at 3,500 miles or 5,000 KMS… Thanks for the heads up…
Good move to increase production of some of their best selling models, duh! Dumb move to stop producing them in Canada to build EV’s that no one wants!
Love our 2020 Equinox LT. Leftover we bought in Feb, 2021. Has the 1.5 (1st turbo 4 I’ve ever had) I feel it has plenty of power and great mpg. Now has 11K miles, listed for $31K and after rebates out the door for about $24.5K. Was great purchase before chip shortage and wife loves it,
Same here!
