Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The 7,1,515 Cadillac XT6 sales during Q2 2021 moves the crossover up one spot to seventh place in its competitive set of ten vehicles in terms of overall sales volume. Despite the gain in the rankings, the XT6 saw its segment share fall from seven to six percent. In fact, the XT6 ranked as high as sixth place in its class back in Q3 2020.

The segment was led by the Acura MDX with 19,803 deliveries and BMW X5 and X6 in close second (we’re counting these as a single vehicle) with 19,118 sales. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class took third, followed by the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave in fourth (see Buick Enclave sales), the Volvo XC90 in fifth (see Volvo XC90 sales), followed by the Audi Q7 (see Audi Q7 sales) in sixth. The Lincoln Aviator (see Lincoln Aviator sales), new-to-market Genesis GV80, and Infiniti QX60 were the only models outsold by the XT6.

From a segment share standpoint, Acura and Mercedes-Benz led the segment with 17 percent each while BMW claimed 16 percent between the X5 and X6. Buick took 13 percent, while Volvo accounted for 10 percent, and Audi took 9 percent. Cadillac walked away with 6 percent, Lincoln and Genesis took 5 percent each, and Infiniti trailed with 1 percent.

It’s worth noting that combining sales of the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6 gives GM 22,247 deliveries for a 21 percent share – placing first in the segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, ahead of the Acura MDX by 2,444 units and BMW by 3,129 units. Combined XT6 and Enclaves sales also enables GM to beat the segment-leading Acura in terms of segment share by 2 percentage points.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment (lux crossover E-segment) expanded 93 percent to 114,250 units in Q2 2021 on better availability and a lack of COVID-19 restrictions, meaning that Cadillac XT6 sales performed relatively close to the segment average.

For the sake of presenting a more complete picture of the competitive landscape, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with the three-row luxury models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also including the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct XT5 and XT6 rivals, respectively.

TOTAL +66.76% 58,252 34,932 +39.15% 112,414 80,787

Combining sales of the XT5 and XT6 results in 17,724 units, down about 11K units compared to the 28,703 units delivered by the Lexus RX.

The GM Authority Take

The continued growth in Cadillac XT6 sales demonstrates the luxury crossover’s ability to compete favorably in a highly-competitive segment despite a relatively short time on the market and sub-optimal availability. We’d characterize the performance as being solid given the XT6’s ability to maintain most of its segment share, despite most of its rivals being substantially more established and having deeper roots in the marketplace, including those offered by Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Acura.

That said, a 73 percent increase in XT6 sales was just slightly shy of the segment average as a whole, which expanded 93 percent. Even so, the growth in XT6 sales as well as in the segment is welcome news, particularly given the negative impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we remain interested in seeing how the XT6 performs throughout the rest of the year, and if it is able to move up in the segment as the market continues to stabilize.

For the 2021 model year, the XT6 gained a new base trim level called Luxury. The change is accompanied by a new standard engine in the form of the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 LSY engine. The new trim level enables the XT6 to attain a lower starting price while bringing the XT6 in line with the latest Cadillac Y-trim level strategy that’s been utilized on most other Cadillac models.

  1. Still it’s still poor, I am wondering why the Lincoln aviator fell short, I mean it’s very luxurious and fast, the last time I saw the xt6 it had striking presence and the Lincoln aviator had a striking interior. The interior in the xt6 is not bad but as a Cadillac it should be the standard of the world, if the xt6 cannot even come close to the standard of the class then cadillac has a lot of work to do in order to regain the title as a luxury brand, At least they got it right with the Escalade and maybe the lyriq.

    1. All Acuras are made in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio, Infiniti QX60 is made in Smyrna Tennessee, and Lexus RXs are made in Ontario, Canada. Toyota and Honda are the largest foreign manufacturing employer and investor in the US. It is no surprise the Japanese do so well in North America because they actually invest into the local economy, unlike Chrysler that sold out to the French and Italian surrender monkeys and lower case gm that stabbed us taxpayers in the back and is running to China. I rather buy a vehicle that pays a lot of hard working middle class men and women of this country and some ending up in foreign executive.

But I do agree about those sneaky Germans though.

  3. YTD sales of the Enclave are nothing short of amazing on 2 fronts: 1- it’s within 14% of the next sales leader, the vaunted X5. 2- Looking down the chart, it’s at least 30% ahead of the XC90 and Q7. Why? Size, interior design, and price points. It took the most important page out of Acura/Infiniti/Lexus playbook and is beating major Japanese and European stalwarts.
What if the XT6 was based on the Enclave/Traverse platform to establish size, then executed a fantastic interior…..oh wait….it’s GM.

    1. Craig: Soon the 2022 Enclave will be out (chip shortages could delay that). Once that revised Enclave is out, I think it will do even better. Let’s hope.

  4. I keep asking, What makes a XT6 worth 20K more than a Chevy Traverse??? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?????

    1. Nothing, hence why it’s not really competitive in this segment other than by brand name. Nothing about the XT6 says luxury other than its brand.

  5. What can you expect from a FWD platform, Cadillac rushed to bring this to market and now they need to face the consequences when you develop a luxury car you need time and money and instead gm just use the FWD and made it nicer, this car doesn’t even have one exclusive and special feature other than super cruise if it comes to the xt6. The lyriq and Escalade is what the xt6 should have been. I hope the future electric version of the xt6 whatever it’s called does better.

    2. What guarantees of market success would this have if it was rwd. Cadillacs first attempt at a 3 row rwd crossover was a sales so so. Plus there’s that the market leaders by Acura and Lexus are both fwd based crossovers.

The problem here isn’t the drive wheels. But probably Cadillacs brand perception and the CT6s interior appointments.

      1. Also the problem is you get next to nothing for your extra 20 large. Instead of going full cheap on converting a Traverse maybe not using the same 3.6 as every other thing GM makes. Have the Cadillac exclusive 3.0 of witch there are several versions. Have Brembos as standard not the cheap auto Zone brakes EVERY thing else has. The XT5 and 6 should be all wheel drive only for the extra 20K . Also do they Use Hyperstruts! I dont know or did cheap GM decide the Auto Zone struts were GOOD ENOUGH. Simply put SOME effort into it.

  6. Wow, even with its success you telling buyers to go with the Explorer ST with air shocks (Lincoln) , the Pilot with pizzazz (Acura) or the High-end Highlander? (Lexus) . Such better choices, lol.

  9. I think with a V model and a lyriq like interior would create a true competitor for the germans. Even on the enclave I think a upgraded interior and a ST model would sell really well taking on the first place spot.

    1. When the XT6 came out it had a several year old interior! Only GM………… Oh there is no performance version of the Traverse so there cant be a V…..

  10. The Buick Enclave Avenir is a sick looking SUV! I can’t believe the Avenir has standard massaging seats and that beautiful Chestnut interior but the Xt6 does not even have that as an option…then there are those firm seats in the XT6 even with the upgraded Maple Sugar. I’ve sat inside an Avenir and the seats are plush, comfortable and supportive (which should be the Xt6). I think the Xt6 looks great on the outside but the interior just bothers me. The dash and console looks so cheap especially in black. Why doesn’t the XT6 Sport have a red leather seat option like the RX?

The more I see the Enclave the more I prefer it over the XT6 – with the highest trim levels Avenir vs Platinum I would pick Avenir.

Also I wish the XT6 had the Sedona Orange leather seat option like the XT5 – I think that would help with the interior.

  12. Doesn’t the data say it lost 1 share point? Not sure anyone should be cheerleading failure. And that will likely get worse as competitor product scarcity disappears. That’s the real story-well that and how Lincoln grossly mispriced an appealing product.
