Competitive Sales Comparison

Cadillac XT6 sales saw 4,131 deliveries during the second quarter, marking its fourth quarter of availability in the United States market. However, Q4 2019 wasn’t a “full” quarter of availability due to the 40 day-long UAW strike, which depleted inventories and stifled sales of many GM models across the country. Meanwhile, second quarter 2020 deliveries were stifled due to complications brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, the Q2 2020 performance puts the three-row, midsize-plus crossover in seventh place in its competitive set of ten vehicles in terms of overall sales volume – up three spots compared to Q1 2020. The segment was led by the BMW X5 and X6 duo delivering a combined 9,718 sales and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (comprised of the GLE-Class and GLE-Class Coupe) with 9,500 deliveries, only trailing BMW by 218 units. Third place went to the Acura MDX, followed by the Volvo XC90 in fourth (see Volvo XC90 sales), the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave – in fifth (see Buick Enclave sales) and the Audi Q7 in sixth (see Audi Q7 sales). The XT6 outsold the Lexus GX in eighth, the newer Lincoln Aviator in ninth (see Lincoln Aviator sales) and the Infiniti QX60 in tenth.

From a segment share standpoint, BMW and Mercedes-Benz both held 15 percent. Acura had 14 percent and Volvo and Buick each took 12. Audi, Cadillac, and Lexus all held a seven percent share while Lincoln and Infiniti held 6 and 5 percent, respectively. It’s worth noting that combining sales of the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6 results in 11,584 deliveries for a 19 percent share – enough to lead the segment in cumulative sales volume and share.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment (lux crossover E-segment) contracted 26 percent to 63,320 units in Q2 2020.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of what’s taking place, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with the three-row luxury models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also throwing in Lincoln’s XT5 and XT6 rivals, for an even more complete representation.

The GM Authority Take

Second-quarter 2020 Cadillac XT6 sales were 943 units fewer compared to the preceding quarter. During its short time on the market, with relatively limited availability from a units standpoint, the XT6 has been able to establish itself in the segment. The performance is rather solid, especially when compared to significantly more established, deeply-rooted and more well-known rivals from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Infiniti and Acura. In fact, the XT6 has now almost completely caught up to the Audi offering.

That said, XT6 sales – as well as sales of most other vehicles – during Q2 2020 were still negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we remain interested in seeing how this three-row luxury CUV performs throughout the rest of 2020, and once things are (more or less) back in full swing.

  • All percent change figures compared to Cadillac XT6 sales for Q2 2019, unless noted otherwise

  1. It’s sad that the coronavirus fiasco has damaged the industry so much. I was really looking forward to seeing what the XT6 could do in a full-throttle sales year.

Beyond that, I had to laugh at the sales figures of the XT6 compared to the Aviator. All I kept hearing about was how vastly superior the Lincoln mid-sizer was to the Caddy, all the reviewers, all the journos said this. It supposedly wasn’t even close. And yet, the Lincoln has sold only 400 more units than the supposedly far-inferior Cadillac.

    Interesting.

    2. Remember the original SRX? All magazines loved it said it was the best, built off a rear drive platform. Sold ok, New SRX built off FWD platform took off in sales and the magazines didn’t care for it. People buying these vehicles want AWD period, they don’t care if its FWD Based or RWD based just that its AWD. Nobody is buying these for the twisties or straightline performance.

      1. The X5 outsells XT6 with it’s rwd/awd, besides the XT5 is for the ones who still prefer fwd/awd. Not saying the XT6 must be rwd but it’s really no point of continuing it as a fwd if it’s no real platform for it in the future and with Aviation, GC, X5, etc are rear-drivers buyers also won’t care for drive wheels as long as they don’t get stuck..

      Yes.

The same happened with the Continental. All kinds of hand wringing and people trumpeting the doom of Cadillac. The ancient (compared to the Lincoln) XTS handily outsold it.

The Navigator was the same. Its a fantastic product, but sales settled down to older historic levels fairly quickly.

The Aviator is a terrific product. The design is a bit too gaudy for me, but that’s just an opinion. It’s selling well, but looking at sales of other Lincoln CUVs, Aviator seems to be cannibalizing from them and likely too from Navigator.

The fact is, despite all its shortcomings, the Cadillac Brand is simply stronger than that of Lincoln.

I wonder if Fords new CEO will want to keep Lincoln.

      1. @Megeebee,

Well said, all of it. Even here, there are plenty who like to hate on Cadillac. Some criticism is perfectly valid, too. But we can all hang our hats on the fact that, no matter what they do, Lincoln will never be as strong a brand as Cadillac.

But this doesn’t mean Cadillac can sit on their hands and laugh. I think the recent success of Lincoln led to great new arrivals like the 2021 Escalade and upcoming Lyriq. Interior improvements are especially notable.

I wonder if Cadillac much cares any more what Lincoln does or doesn’t do. I think they have their corporate eye on the better selling Foreign names and Tesla.

      2. Don’t disagree on the strength of the brand, or on the expectations of XT6 versus Aviator. That said, putting Escalade/Nav info aside (they really are a different size altogether), the data above tends to suggest that the XT6 is doing the most cannibalizing of sales, from the XT5….in total the two are selling less than XT5 alone last year…XT5 is really tanking. The Aviator appears to be cannibalizing relatively less of the Nautilus…the total of those two is higher than last year…and Nautilus is rivaling 2nd qtr XT5 volume for the first time ever.

Cadillac still selling slightly more of this size/class, but not performing as well year on year. Really will be interesting to watch as a few less-COVID quarters unfold.

        1. I think the XT4 is taking more sales away from the XT5 honestly. The XT5 is long in the tooth. It’s sales are going to decline a bit on its own as well. GMs plan is working out pretty good. The XT6 is a parts bin model with minimum development and selling as well as models that got a lot more money spent on them. We also know the XT6 won’t be around for long before the EV replacement gets here.

  2. Might not be as fancy as the Aviator, but its a better driving more reliable vehicle. Better looking exterior also in my opinion.
I hope it gains steam and keeps getting better sales numbers. One of my favorites.

  3. Cadillac’s XT6 could possibly attract even more consumers if there was engine option available, a V8 or twin-turbo V6 as it would help elevate the XT6 to a higher plateau.

  4. My take here is the XT6 and even the Lincoln fall short of what they could or should have Been.

The XT6 should have been on the Omega platform with RWD And AWD.

As of now they not are just more expensive Chevys and Fords.

A XT6 with a Omega platform and Black wing engine. That would have been a real reason for someone to upgrade from a Denali.

      Every word !

    2. Yes, a RWD/AWD XT6 would have been cool but it would have been more expensive and less profitable and would have competed with the Escalade. Make it AWD but fwd based and cater it more to women and have a couple different engines, a V6 around 300 hp and a tt V6. Two different audiences then. Then bring out a RWD/AWD based XT5 that is sportier. Make it similar size to current model. Again it’s a different market than the XT6 and could compliment the Escalade.

      Reply
      1. The model would have been more expensive but it would have been just as profitable, It also would have been smaller than the Escalade

It old have been more in tune to compete with the sport SUV models form Audi, BMW and Porsche.

The Point is the XT6 is nothing but a Traverse and Acadia based model, There is litter incentive to spend the extra money just to get an more expensive Denali.

This has been the down fall of Cadillac as it is just another GM corporate car with badge engineering. While it is a better model there is little difference there than what Cadillac did with the he Cavalier.

You can’t discount your way to the top of the luxury segment. How many times does it have to fail before they learn?

          Again agreed !
          100%

And I DO agree the XT6 and the XT4 are just watering down the Cadillac midsized customer.
Sure will they sell a few more, yep a few, but they will NOT cut into any foreign market and THAT is where the numbers are at !

Also the NEW Escalade IS a beautiful vehicle, and will sell the SAME as the current Escalade and again, a few more, yet AGAIN the market Cadillac has wanted since the 1980’s is a midsized market.
Midsized and ( some what performance ) NOT Small Block Chevy V8 Performance, just better than the average midsized performance !
And the SAME with the Cadillac sedan !
Cadillac could have made TWO sedans from 1985 up until now. One a larger FWD ( floaty ) sedan with 2 or 3 engine choices and a AWD option ! And one midsized current CT5 sized RWD with 3 engine choices and AWD !
And sold just as many total vehicles !
          FOUR Cadillac vehicles !
Two sedans, two SUVs, one ( floaty ) like Escalade and DTS, two midsized RWD more performance !
However now we get ONE, just ONE good Cadillac ( Escalade ) And a whole bunch of HIGH PRICED CHEVY’S !

  6. As the proud owner of a V series, the XT6 which I had as a loaner is a dud. I wanted to like it but it’s nothing to brag about in comparison to anything else other than it’s own stablemates. Hopefully we can have a full year of sales without interruptions so the excuses for this vehicle can stop.

    1. Not saying it was a dud, but my XT6 loaner didn’t seem to stand out with anything in particular but also didn’t do anything poorly (except for not great fuel economy). It was a super nice minivan in my opinion. It had been a bit since my last XT5 seat time, but I had an XT5 loaner a couple weeks after the XT6 and I felt that was a much better car as far as driving goes (same motor had better ride/handling, tidier, peppier, got like 3 MPG better). I’m curious what OTD pricing is on the XT5 vs XT6 – the XT6 interior seemed “more” so it might be the better value if they run close. One thing the XT6 could do that I would probably never do in my RWD ATS is a left-hand rip out of an angled parking lot onto a rush hour 5-laner – no worrying about re-arranging the front bumper when it’s a foot off the ground or fishtailing on surprise gravel (I appreciate the tall-AWD in those situations).

  7. 90% of the vehicles outselling the XT6 are nearing the end of their life cycles, yet outselling a relatively new product. The XT6 is not a luxury vehicle and if it was named Hyundai it would probably sell better, except the Palisade / Telluride are more luxurious and better. You gotta love the pathetic new promo line on the Cadillac web site: “The Ultimate in Iconic Luxury” I mean do they even believe that? Seriously, they cannot really believe this is the “ultimate” in anything, perhaps the ultimate in what they can do with this boring platform??

While its interesting they’re “finally” reaching to their roots which is the only reason these vehicles are even in the Lux segment, they’re doing it with substandard lux vehicles. Not only that the EV’s are waaaaaay to far down the road… This brand and parent remain lost…
