Competitive Sales Comparison (U.S.)

Cadillac XT6 sales saw 6,249 deliveries during the third quarter, marking its fifth quarter of availability in the United States market. However, it’s worth noting that Q4 2019 wasn’t a “full” quarter of availability due to the 40 day-long UAW strike, which depleted inventories and stifled sales of many GM models, including those of the XT6. Meanwhile, third quarter 2020 deliveries increased despite complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, the Q3 2020 performance puts the three-row, midsize-plus crossover in sixth place in its competitive set of eight vehicles in terms of overall sales volume, an improvement compared to Q2 2020. The segment was led by the BMW X5 and X6 duo delivering a combined 14,825 sales and the Acura MDX in second with 14,579 sales. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class took third, followed by the XT6’s corporate cousin – the Buick Enclave in fourth (see Buick Enclave sales) and the Volvo XC90 in fifth (see Volvo XC90 sales), followed by the XT6, which outsold the Audi Q7 (see Audi Q7 sales), the Lincoln Aviator (see Lincoln Aviator sales) and the Infiniti QX60.

BMW and Acura led the segment with 18 percent share each, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 13. Buick took 12 while Volvo took 10. Cadillac walked away with 8 percent, followed by Audi and Lincoln with 7 percent each. Infiniti trailed with 6 percent.

It’s worth noting that combining sales of the Buick Enclave and Cadillac XT6 gives GM 16,186 deliveries for a 20 percent share – enough to lead the segment in cumulative sales volume and share.

The premium/luxury three-row crossover segment (lux crossover E-segment) contracted nearly 7 percent to 82,669 units in Q3 2020.

For the sake of presenting a clearer picture of the competitive landscape, we are providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Though the RX is a premium midsize CUV slotting into the luxury utility D segment (along with the Cadillac XT5), the Japanese vehicle is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with the three-row luxury models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales. We’re also including the Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator, which are direct XT5 and XT6 rivals, respectively.

The GM Authority Take

Third-quarter 2020 Cadillac XT6 sales were 2,118 units higher compared to the preceding quarter, enabling the XT6 to establish itself in the segment during a relatively short time on the market, despite relatively limited availability and an ultra-competitive segment. We’d characterize the performance as being solid, especially when compared to significantly more established, deeply-rooted rivals from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Acura. In fact, the XT6 surpassed the Audi Q7 in sales volume during the third quarter.

That said, XT6 sales during Q3 2020 – as well as sales of most other vehicles – were still negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we remain interested in seeing how the three-row luxury CUV performs throughout the final quarter of 2020.

For the 2021 model year, the XT6 gains a new base trim level. Called Luxury, the new trim delivers a lower starting price while bringing the XT6 in line with the Cadillac Y-trim level strategy that’s been utilized on most other Cadillac models.

    1. Buick Enclave way down, too. Some people must prefer a shorter 3-row.

        1. All the naysayers kept harping on XT6 because it’s not a performance rwd CUV and Aviator is the best luxury ever but sales and reviews say different, I’m on the current XT6 side. With that stated, I’m for a rwd XT6 when it’s completely redesigned.

  4. Selling 15,000 units in 9 months and in 7th place is not much to cheer about . Buick in the 5th spot may have lost sales to the XT6 , but is still ahead of Cadillac . GM must be concerned as the 2021’s already have a 1500.00 discount on them . Is GM looking for high TAP or gaining market share in this segment ?
