The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Argentina sales suffered a notable decrease in February. The performance represents the third consecutive month of sales volume contractions for the Bow Tie brand in the South American country, after sales fell in both December 2020 and January. The brand’s negative result contrasts with the recovery recorded in the Argentine automotive market during the month, with aggregate sales increasing 7.2 percent compared on an annual basis.
Notably, the decline in Chevrolet Argentina sales in January was driven by the drastic decrease in Chevrolet Onix sales. In February, the subcompact model range lost a significant 885 units year-over-year.
That marks a significant change from the recent past, when Onix was the best-selling vehicle in South America, including Argentina. However, GM exports the vehicle from Brazil to Argentina, and the model’s local availability is being negatively impacted by an unfavorable import policy imposed by Argentine authorities. This circumstance has negatively impacted the commercial performance of the Onix in Argentina during the last three months.
By contrast, six of 11 models offered by the Bow Tie brand in Argentina managed to post sales volume growth during the month. As in the most recent months, the models that stood out the most were the new Chevrolet Tracker and the locally-made Chevrolet Cruze, which posted 279 and 54 percent growth rates, respectively. Both vehicles further strengthen their positions as the second (Cruze) and third (Tracker) best-selling Chevrolet models in the Argentine market.
It’s also worth noting the solid performance of the refreshed S10 and TrailBlazer, which posted growth rates of 42 and 50 percent, respectively.
