As we anticipated five months ago in our launch report, the all-new Chevrolet Onix is revolutionizing the subcompact vehicle segment in South America. After setting a new sales record and further consolidating its leadership in the Brazilian market, the Onix has now become the best-selling car in Argentina – the second biggest market in the region.
General Motors completed the 2020 Chevrolet Onix portfolio in the South American country with the introduction of the Premier trim level at the end of January, which immediately impacted the model’s sales. In February, the Onix ranked first in the Argentine market with 1,708 units sold, according to official figures from the Argentine Republic Automotive Dealers Association. The figure represents a 40% increase over the 1,222 Onix sales in February 2019.
Although this isn’t the first time that the Chevrolet subcompact leads a monthly report in Argentina, the excellent start of the new Onix family is very auspicious for GM’s sales strategy. In addition, unifying the two body styles of the vehicle with the same nameplate (the first-generation sedan was sold as the Prisma) further bolstered the success of the Onix in South America.
“The new Onix family redefined the concept of the affordable car, incorporating safety, performance, technology and connectivity. A new generation of vehicles is now being chosen in Argentina and other countries in the region,” said the President of GM South America, Carlos Zarlenga, in a press release.
The strong results in both Brazil and Argentina confirm the excellent reception of the second-generation Chevrolet Onix in South America. Since its introduction, the 2020 Chevrolet Onix has stood out from the competition for its enhanced connectivity options, for introducing the first turbocharged engine in its segment and for its comprehensive list of safety features.
As such, the Chevrolet Onix consolidates its position as the category benchmark for being a well-equipped and attractive car that meets the needs of its customers. Undoubtedly, this sales success in Argentina will boost the Onix’s lead as the best-selling car in Latin America, in addition to its recent introduction in Mexico and other countries in the hemisphere.
