The GM Authority Take

GM Mexico sales saw another significant decline during the first month of 2021, deepening the negative performance that the company has experienced in the market in recent months. In fact, January represents the 11th consecutive month during which GM sales have declined in Mexico, where vehicle demand continues to be unstable due to various economic difficulties accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As was the case in previous months, the drastic decrease in GM Mexico sales in January is directly related to the significant volume losses of two models that had led the automaker’s sales in the Latin country – the Chevrolet Aveo and entry-level Beat. Together, both nameplates suffered a substantial sales volume of 6,989 units on a year-over-year basis, due to a decline in both the number of units manufactured as well as the and for local demand.

By contrast, the new Chevrolet Onix and Chevrolet Tracker continued to increase their importance for the Mexican subsidiary. In January, the locally-manufactured Onix recorded four consecutive months as GM Mexico’s best-selling vehicle, while the all-new Tracker racks up three consecutive months as the most popular crossover in its segment.

Additionally, it’s worth highlighting the excellent performance of the Chevrolet Silverado as well as of GM’s recently-overhauled line of full-size SUVs – the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade, all of which registered substantial increases in the double and triple digits.
