The Encore GX earned a four percent market share in its segment, down two percentage points year-over-year. The Trax led here, doubling its segment share to 14 percent, while the Crosstrek maintained an 11 percent share, and the HR-V held a 10 percent share, up one percentage point. The Trailblazer and Corolla Cross both posted a seven percent share, down four and up three percentage points, respectively. The Envista earned a four percent share, and the Encore’s share was nil.

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 111,668 deliveries and a combined 29 percent segment share. That keeps The General solidly in first place overall, accounting for more than a quarter of all sales in this space.

One could argue that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 59,554 deliveries for a combined 16 percent segment share, keeping the conglomerate in second.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 21 entries, though two of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 29 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 16 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – seven percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Toyota – seven percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales and higher deliveries. However, those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, seem to hold their own comparatively, actually outpacing Stellantis even though it currently fields four models.

GM commanded first place again ahead of Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) this quarter.

Overall, sales of mainstream subcompact crossovers again grew 24 percent to 386,665 units during Q2 2024, meaning Buick Encore GX sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Encore GX sales underperformed this quarter, just holding its own around mid-pack. It seems as though the fully refreshed 2024 Encore GX is not making much of a dent in sales, being actually down year-over-year. However, combining Buick Encore GX sales with the other two Buick models in this class and the two Chevy models keeps GM in command of the top, this time a healthy nine segment share percentage points ahead of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate that fields as many models.

About Encore GX

The refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX arrives incorporating fresh styling cues and significant updates inside, including new tech headlined by Buick’s Virtual Cockpit System featuring 19 inches of screen real estate via an 11-inch infotainment screen and 8-inch configurable driver cluster screen. Consequently, the 2024 Encore GX loses the head-up display feature.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, while wireless phone charging is optional.

The Buick Driver Confidence package is standard and includes many safety features, including adaptive cruise control. Finally, the 2024 model year refresh consists of some mild powertrain enhancements.

It also debuts a new standalone Sport Touring (ST) trim level, replacing the previously available optional package and a range-topping Avenir trim – both available for the first time ever on the Encore GX – while dropping the Select and Essence trims.

Outside, winged LED headlamps are standard across the range, while LED taillights are equipped higher in the range. New 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options are also on offer.

The Avenir trim level offers exclusive design cues, features, and premium materials, including a unique grille, clear LED taillights, 19-inch wheels, chrome body accents, and black carbon metallic body side molding. Inside, the Encore GX Avenir features leather seating, a 10-way power driver seat, a heated steering wheel, and an air ionizer system.

The refreshed 2024 Encore GX also reimagines the ST trim for a sportier demeanor, incorporating high-gloss black front and rear bumpers, an optional Black Roof Package, and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Standard spec under the hood is the familiar turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, is available as an option. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional, with front-wheel-drive models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and all-wheel-drive models equipped with the GM 9-speed automatic transmission.

The 2025 Buick Encore GX arrives with a few notable changes and updates over the refreshed 2024 model year, including a new paint color called Aquamarine Blue Metallic and an E85-compatible engine to make it a flex fuel vehicle.

  1. Because it’s tiny and WAY overpriced. Potential buyers see the much larger Envista and wonder. And then leave the showroom in disgust.

  2. Tough market niche with 21 models on this chart. Envista probably cannibalizing sales from Encore GX. Buick has little to offer with only four models in the showroom at this time, (Encore being phased out with minimal sales this quarter).
