The GM Authority Take

Once again, Chevrolet Argentina sales suffered a notable decline during the month of May deepening the brand’s negative performance in the South American country. Last month’s drop was at a rate almost identical to that of April and represents Chevrolet’s seventh consecutive monthly contraction in the Argentine market. Despite this, volume once again marked a notable recovery, with almost 500 more units than the previous month.

Contrary to the norm, Chevrolet Argentina’s poor performance in May was not conditioned by the results of the best-selling models but by the sharp declines of four other models, which together subtracted a significant volume of 414 units. Among them, those that contributed most to the overall balance being negative were the Chevy Onix and the Chevy S10, with falls of 51 and 65 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, the best-selling Chevy Tracker again registered a healthy increase and is consolidating its position as the most popular crossover in the Argentine automotive market. Surprisingly, the discontinued Chevy Cruze also increased its sales in May and followed closely behind the Tracker with almost the same volume, although it stopped being manufactured at the end of December, and the last units left in stock are being sold. It is estimated that this unusual result is the result of discounts for the model at dealerships.
