We’re Driving The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV – What Do You Want To Know?

General Motors revealed the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV all the way back in April 2021, with production of the all-electric super SUV finally kicking off in January 2023. Now, before deliveries begin towards the end of Q1 2023, GM Authority is headed to Napa, California to drive the highly-anticipated Hummer EV SUV. With this in mind, what do you want to know, dear reader?

The first Hummer EV SUV units to roll off the assembly line at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan will be outfitted in the range-topping Edition 1 trim level, which is equipped as standard with 22-inch premium wheels, assist steps, and floor liners. More notably, the Edition 1 features a 20-module powertrain that utilizes GM Ultium batteries and three GM Ultium Drive motors to produce 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. Range is GM-estimated to be more than 300 miles from a single charge.

For prospective buyers that want to take the off-roading capabilities of the all-electric SUV to the next level, GM offers the Extreme Off-Road package (RPO code Z6X). This package features 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Outer Diameter (OD) Mud Terrain (MT) tires, as well as extensive underbody armor, rock sliders, a front eLocker and virtual rear lockers, heavy duty ball-spline half shafts, and UltraVision with underbody camera views.

Under the body panels, the Hummer EV SUV rides on the GM BT1 platform, which it shares with the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. A modified version of the same architecture is used by the GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV.

Pricing for the GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 starts at $105,595. However, unless you’ve already placed your order, you’re out of luck, since both GMC Hummer EV variants are sold out for at least the next two years, as GM Authority reported in October 2022.

While we will soon be behind the wheel of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, we will only be able to share driving impressions starting March 23rd,  so we’ll be unable to answer any questions until then. We encourage readers to post their questions in the comments section below, and we’ll get back to you on the date above.

    1. If having four wheels and upright proportions makes it “look like a Toyota FJ”, then so be it.

Closer to reality, this is a very attractive vehicle for its target demographic.

      1. I looks a lot like an FJ, take the pictures side by side, and you will see multiple things in common, and I agree it is (mostly) attractive but It reminds me to much of the FJ

  3. I’ve heard it claimed that the Hummer EV SUV will be surprisingly different from the pickup version, even having different proportions. I’d like to know if this claim is true and if so then to what degree. E.g., how does it handle, brake, and how is the NVH, etc.? Is it exactly the same as the pickup or are there noticeable differences? Thanks!

  4. What is this nonsense of a “EV SUV”? That is calling it a vehicle twice ! Just call it a “ESUV” and save a letter and a space.

    1. I asked about this. The irony is not lost on some people at GM.

  6. What is the curb weight of the SUV 3X version without the “offroad package”? Not seen any public info on this and no dealer can inform me. Must be a lot lighter than the 9053lb SUT version, since it is shorter, has 4 less battery-modules etc. Will a special driving license be required when driving in Europe?

    1. There’s no final curb weight yet, but I’ve unofficially heard that the SUV will be around 500 pounds lighter.

  7. Actual real world range impressions?

  8. A close look at the underside and as many of the components you can get a view of including batteries, motors, heat pumps, etc. Real world specs and impressions on functionality, ease of use and ergonomics for all the knobs, screens and buttons. Performance of course especially what to expect from real world range vs what GM/EPA say it is. Visibility front, rear and sides with and without cameras. The rear window look incredibly small. Is there a digital rear view mirror to help with this? I once thought about buying a Toyota FJ cruiser until I sat in it and couldn’t see much of the world around me. Fit and finish is also of interest. Paint, seam gaps, rattles, quality of materials inside and out. You’re gonna be busy.

  9. How much does the estimated range decrease with towing? How about range in cold weather?

    Reply
    1. Range drop as a result of towing is the same as when towing with an IC vehicle, and is between 15 to 25 percent. It all depends on many variables like trailer size, shape, and weight.

I didn’t get a clear answer on the cold weather part, but I was told that the Ultium batteries are conditioned to be in the optimal temp range.

  10. Type of tires? With no engine noise, how much or type of sound from the road to the cabin? Dead quiet, some rubble, typical road noise? Any noise from the drive train? With an EV, is there a neutral gear?

  14. If there is a neutral of sorts and the vehicle dies, can it be pushed off to the side of the road? A 5 ton vehicle is awfully heavy. Does it have a 12v battery to drive accessories as other EV’s have?

  15. All I want to know is why GM chose to waste so much money, time and resources on Hummer EVs when they could have focused on and built vehicles that will actually sell in the mass market.

    Reply
    1. Albert, GM is following Tesla’s play book. First start with high profitable models that will generate high revenues to pay off the billions of investment. It must be working since planned production for the Hummer is sold out. Ms Marry Barra states that 2023 will be the break out year for more mass marketed vehicles.

That’s the problem, GM needs to stop trying to be the next Tesla. Forget about Tesla, GM has bigger fish to compete against.

    2. The battery plant is just ramping up. It makes sense to use the initially limited supply for the high margin vehicles. As battery supply increases, they will introduce more mass market vehicles.
