Back in July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) opened an investigation into the backup cameras of the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 and GMC Acadia after receiving complaints from consumers stating that the rearview cameras were not functioning properly. Now that GM has issued a recall notice on affected vehicles, the investigation has been closed.
According to a report by CarComplaints, the NHTSA received complaints from owners over the course of two years over the camera failures, and that a majority of affected vehicles had low mileage. Shortly after the investigation began, General Motors announced in September a rearview camera recall for six different models, all of which were equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature:
- 2020 Cadillac XT5
- 2021 Cadillac XT5
- 2020 Cadillac XT6
- 2021 Cadillac XT6
- 2020 GMC Acadia
- 2021 GMC Acadia
It was found that an improperly crimped coaxial cable connector was the culprit for the rearview camera issues. The faulty crimping could lead to a loss of communication between the camera and the dashboard screen.
GM Authority first reported on the NHTSA probe back in July. Owners of affected vehicles told investigators that the infotainment screen would go black when the rearview camera was in operation. The screen would sometimes display a little red triangle with a circle through it. At that time, it was believed that over 190,000 vehicles were affected by the issue.
Owners of a Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 or GMC Acadia will be pleased to hear that the cost of replacing the camera coaxial cable and dysfunctional connectors will be performed free of charge. Additionally, the NHTSA believes this recall will fix the camera failure problems.

I purchased my 2020 XT6 in July. Experienced these issues immediately, received a new camera and the issues continue. I was happy to see this investigation was completed and am anxiously awaiting my recall notification.
My 2021 Corvette does the same thing intermittently. I wonder if that the same issue?
Usually the connector in the right front kick panel on the Cadillac’s. Fixed a bunch of these for a no camera concern!
All three of these models are built in GM’s terrible Spring Hill TN assembly plant. The same plant that is botching the new electric Lyriq builds.
