GM China Sales Jump 69 Percent During First Quarter 2021

GM China sales increased 69 percent to 780,200 units during the first quarter of 2021. The performance represents an important recovery with respect to Q1 2020, which was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales increased at all five GM China brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Wuling and Baojun.

General Motors does not provide individual sales performance of vehicle sales in China, but we do have the following information.

SAIC-GM Sales – Q1 2021

First-quarter 2021 sales results at SAIC-GM – GM’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac operations – increased 71.6 percent to 346,900 units.

Buick sales increased 73.4 percent to 224,700 units

  • Sales of the refreshed GL8 MPV family grew to nearly 42,000 units
  • Envision SUV family saw deliveries top 29,000 units
  • The Buick LaCrosse flagship sedan sales increased to over 13,000 units

Chevrolet sales increased 27.2 percent to 64,800 units

  • The brand’s SUV mix improved, led by the Blazer and refreshed Equinox
  • Sales of the Malibu XL sedan rose to over 13,000 units

Cadillac sales increased 114.2 percent to 57,400 units

  • The brand’s SUV lineup comprised of the XT4, XT5 and XT6 continued to record robust performance, with collective sales topping 34,000 units
  • Sales of the CT5 luxury sedan grew to nearly 13,000 units during the first quarter

SAIC-GM-Wuling Sales – Q1 2021

First-quarter 2021 sales results at SAIC-GM-Wuling – GM’s other Chinese joint venture responsible for Wuling and Baojun brands – increased 53.2 percent to 433,300 units.

Baojun sales increased 4.9 percent to 86,200 units

  • The brand’s EV portfolio – including E300 and E300 Plus – posted combined sales of over 10,000 units
  • As the brand continues pivoting to be more youthful, connected and intelligent, it is adding the all-new Valli compact wagon passenger vehicle to appeal to younger consumers who are exploring an active and diversified lifestyle

Wuling sales increased 101.5 percent to 347,100 units

  • The Hong Guang MINI EV solidified its dominant position in its segment, with sales surpassing 72,000 units
  • While maintaining its leadership position in the mini-commercial vehicle segment, Baojun introduced the global silver badge, expanding its presence in the passenger vehicle segment
  • The brand’s first pickup truck, the Wuling Zhengtu (or Journey), was introduced in March

  4. It is weird you have to find GM great sales increases in a GM site but when you look at the business channels all they talk about is Tesla and the small tiny new start-ups. Why CNBC, YAHOO, WALL STREET, and the others do not give GM the credit it is due, but let some GM bad news break out then it is the front page.
